Coffee Talk #286: What Was the Last Game You Loved?

Confession: I did not love a game in 2010. There were loads of games I enjoyed and really liked. Heavy Rain, Final Fantasy XIII, and Pokemon SoulSilver certainly entertained me…but they didn’t made me feel “the love”. When I say love, I’m…

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, the WWE Royal Rumble going from 30 to 40 Superstars, how kinky it is that Miss America is 17, or the odds of Jessica Alba getting divorced (and forming a Super Hottie club with Scarlett Johansson), Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Confession: I did not love a game in 2010. There were loads of games I enjoyed and really liked. Heavy Rain, Final Fantasy XIII, and Pokemon SoulSilver certainly entertained me…but they didn’t made me feel “the love”. When I say love, I’m talking about games that just floor you to the point where you’re just so incredibly grateful that you’re a gamer — games that make you reaffirm your love for this hobby and feel blessed that you can enjoy this remarkable form of entertainment.

I don’t think I’ve “loved” a game since Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. How about you? What was the last game you loved?

Did You Guys Ever See the Grayson Trailer?

Most of you know that I’m a big mark for Nightwing (Dick Grayson). As you can imagine, I loved John Fiorella’s Grayson. The trailer for Grayson went up before I “met” most of you. It’s super cool (except for the Green Lantern costume) and I hope you check it out. Share your thoughts when you have a chance (please).

Mortal Kombat Getting 10 Web Episodes

Remember that really dark and really awesome Mortal Kombat movie trailer starring Jeri Ryan and Michael Jai White? The bad news is that it won’t be getting the full movie treatment. The good news is that it’ll be getting 10 online episodes. Here’s the scoop from Bloody Disgusting:

Director Kevin Tancharoen — who directed the awesome online short — will return behind the camera for a 10-episode web series dedicated to the popular video game. Penned by Tancharoen, Todd Helbing, and Aaron Helbing, star Michael Jai White leads the cast as “Major Jackson ‘Jax’ Briggs. Shooting will take place in Vancouver this coming February. Contested expected to be cast are: Shang Tsung, Liu Kang, Sub Zero, Durak, Kabal, Kitana/Mileena and of course Scorpion. No release date is planned, and there’s no word on that R-rated remake. The only plot details we could conjure up is that a few Earthlings will fight to save the planet from Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung, two Gods ruling over parallel universes, or something to that effect.

As I mentioned in June 2010, I have some issues with a few of the changes made to the characters. However, I love the overall tone of this Mortal Kombat. It’s dark and gritty…and doesn’t have Christopher Lambert’s stupid accent.

You guys and dolls looking forward to this one? Or would you have preferred a movie over an online show?

This Week’s Videogame Releases

January 2011 continues to be a surprisingly strong month for videogames. Leading the way is Media Molecule’s LittleBigPlanet 2. The PlayStation 3 gets a graphically boosted version of Mass Effect 2 that’s available on disc or digital download. Last, but not least, is Square Enix’s Mindjack.

Any of you picking up new games this week?

Today’s Poll: Ricky Gervais’ Golden Globes Performance

Actor/comedian Ricky Gervais has been getting skewered by the mainstream press over the way he hosted last night’s Golden Globe Awards. Several mainstream outlets said that his humor was uncomfortable, awkward, and disrespectful. A small number outlets that could be considered “hipster” sites and magazines loved the way Gervais poked fun at a self-important industry that often takes itself too seriously. Naturally, Gervais won hipster points for thanking God for making him an atheist.

Check out these clips, vote in the poll, and share your thoughts on Gervais’ jokes. As for me, I loved it! I’m a big fan of Gervais’ comedy and writing. I loved that he crossed lines and made jokes that made you squirm as well as laugh.

Pic of Chris Evans as Captain America

Entertainment Weekly nabbed an exlusive pic of Chris Evans as Captain America from Captain America: The First Avenger. Similar to seeing Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, I keep seeing Evans as characters from his other movies. A lot of you know him as The Human Torch (Johnny Storm) from The Fantastic Four movies. Some of you will remember him as Lucas Lee in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. I will sadly admit that I remember him from Not Another Teen Movie.

Now that I’m embarrassed from admitting that I enjoy stupid parody movies, help me get over it by letting me know what you think of the costume (please). It was pretty cool in the renders and I’m digging how it looks in real life. Wucha think?

First Pic of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man

Sony Pictures has sent out an image of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man in the upcoming series reboot. It’s a pretty cool pic…but I keep seeing Eduardo Saverin in The Social Network. Perhaps Spidey will fight the Winkelvoss twins in the movie. That would be cool.

I’m psyched that an image of Garfield as Spider-Man has been released. Until now, fanboys were spending too much time discussing Emma Stone’s (Gwen Stacy) hair. This should help them move on.

Anyway, enjoy the pic and share your thoughts (please)!

NPD 2010 Console Sales Figures (Flame On!)

NPD Group has released its December console sales figures, giving flame warriors some nice 2010 numbers to play with. I haven’t been able to track down the PSP year-end totals yet, but I’ll add them as soon as I do. Here are the total U.S. console sales in 2010 according to NPD Group:

  • Nintendo DS:  8.56 million
  • Nintendo Wii: 7.07 million
  • Xbox 360: 6.76 million
  • PlayStation 3: 4.33 million

While most of the numbers were lower than 2009, Microsoft had a tremendous year with the Xbox 360, selling more than 40 percent more units in 2010 than 2009. The new model combined with Kinect made the Xbox 360 a huge winner in America.

What do you guys and dolls make of the 2010 console wars (in America)?
