Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood (with its outstanding collector’s edition!) leads this fun-filled week of videogame releases. Emma Watson fans will want to pick up Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. Need for Speed Hot Pursuit should satisfy those looking for some hot arcade racing. If classic platforming is your thing then you should give Donkey Kong Country Returns a look. NBA Jam is sure to catch fire this week. Sonic Colors looks like the best Sonic game in years.

PlayStation 3 Ahead of Xbox 360 Worldwide?

According to Famitsu, developer Tose claims that PlayStation 3 is ahead of Xbox 360 by a cool one-million units in terms of global installed base. At a recent presentation, Tose reported that the current worldwide numbers for the three major consoles are approximately:

I’m sure this will shock some American gamers. Xbox 360 is way ahead of PS3 in North America, but globally it has been close for the last year. Tose believes that Sony has pulled ahead of Microsoft. What do you think of these numbers?

This Week’s Videogame Releases

As you’d expect in November, there are fantastic games coming out this week. Call of Duty: Black Ops should light up the charts. Actually, it should obliterate them. The PlayStation 3 has the wonderful The Sly Collection, as well as the Move-tastic The Fight: Lights Out and Singstar Dance. Konami has already pasted American Idol on its Karaoke Revolution franchise, but now it’s time for Karaoke Revolution Glee to shine. Last, but not least, is the delightful Mario vs. Donkey Kong Mini-Land Mayhem for Nintendo DS.

Any of you guys and dolls picking up new games this week?

EA Sports Cancels NBA Elite 11

EA Sports: it’s in the game…except, you know, when it’s not. One game EA Sports won’t be in — at least in the near future — is basketball. The company has announced that NBA Elite 11, previously delayed until 2011, is flat-out canceled. According to Gamasutra:

CFO Eric Brown confirmed today on the company’s call to investors that the game is actually canceled, although the publisher doesn’t plan to terminate the franchise.

Instead, it’ll be moving development of the brand from EA Black Box to its Florida-based Tiburon studio, as part of a wider reorganization of some of its key franchises’ development with the aim of cost-efficiency.

While the NBA Elite franchise has hit a major bump in the road, 2K Sports’ NBA 2K11 has the floor to itself and has time to build on its excellent base. Do you think EA Tiburon will be able to whip EA Sports’ basketball efforts into shape? Or is NBA Elite destined to be Scottie Pippen to NBA 2K’s Michael Jordan?

This Week’s Videogame Releases

Leading this week’s video releases is Kinect for Xbox 360. Some of you are still in denial about Microsoft’s motion-control device, but it will surely sell millions. Just accept it and move on. Naturally, a bunch of launch titles are accompanying the hardware launch, but Dance Central is pretty much the only interesting one.

Other notable releases include Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage, Dragon Ball Z: Raging Blast 2, James Bond 007: Goldeneye, James Bond 007: Blood Stone, God of War: Ghost of Sparta, Ys: The Oath in Felghana, and Patapon 3.

Nintendo Continues Celebrating with Super Mario All-Stars

Continuing to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., Nintendo has announced that Super Mario All-Stars Limited Edition for Wii will land on December 12, 2010. I know that many of you have bought these games five times over, but this $29.99 set will tempt you to buy them again. Here are the contents of the compilation as per the press release:

The games included in the Super Mario All-Stars collection are Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario Bros. 3. Each game features the enhanced graphics and updated sound from the Super NES Super Mario All-Stars collection, and all four can be played on the Wii system using one of several controllers: the Wii Remote controller, Classic Controller, Classic Controller Pro or the Nintendo GameCube controller.

Also included is a Super Mario History soundtrack CD, a compilation of memorable music from the Mario franchise. Containing classic theme songs and fun sound effects from the original Super Mario Bros. game all the way up to this year’s acclaimed Super Mario Galaxy 2 game, this special disc also marks the first official release of the “Super Mario Bros. Ground Theme,” widely recognized as one of the most famous pieces of video game music in history.

Rounding out the Super Mario All-Stars collection is a 32-page Super Mario History booklet featuring interviews, behind-the-scenes details and rare concept art. Fans from every generation can enjoy firsthand insights into the beginnings of Mario, illustrated with candid photos and never-before-seen design sketches. Together with the game software and soundtrack, it’s the ultimate tribute to a unique game series.

Nintendo Posts Loss For the First Time in Seven Years

After years of printing money with its Nintendo DS and Wii consoles, Nintendo has reported a loss for the first time in seven years. The company reported its financial results for the period covering April 2010 to September 2010 and the numbers were not pretty. According to The Wall Street Journal:

The Japanese videogame company recorded a net loss of 2.01 billion yen ($25 million) in the fiscal first half, compared with a profit of 69.49 billion yen a year earlier.

Operating profit for the period fell 48% to 54.23 billion yen from 104.36 billion yen a year earlier.

Revenue fell 34% to 363.16 billion yen from 548.06 billion yen.

Ouchie.

After selling millions and millions of Wii systems, Nintendo’s home-console sales were bound to take a dive. The numbers reflect that the saturation point has been hit. The crazy high value of the yen was also a major factor; it’s hard to export products when your currency makes others look like Monopoly money.

Will the upcoming 3DS — which comes out at the end of Nintendo’s current six-month financial-period — and a healthy holiday season be enough to turn things around? Put on your videogame analyst hat and predict (please)!

Nintendo President Cites Apple and Zynga as Competition

According to Nintendo of American president and COO Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo’s immediate threats are Apple, Zynga, the Internet, and newspapers. He recently told Forbes:

I compete with Zynga, I compete with surfing the net, I compete with the newspaper.

Regarding Apple, Fils-Aime said:

Do I think that in the near term they can hurt us more than Microsoft? Absolutely.

I know that most of you RPad.tv regulars aren’t down with Nintendo products, but let’s play a game anyway. What companies, products, and services are Nintendo’s stiffest competition?

This Week’s Videogame Releases

This is probably 2010’s most important week in gaming since WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2011 — the early pick to win “best writing” awards from every publication and professional organization in the civilized world — comes out this week. You should all buy this game (I’ll even autograph your box!). You want to hear about the other games too? Why?!? Oh…I’ll humor you.

Fable III is a huge exclusive for the Xbox 360 and currently ranked #1 on Amazon’s sales charts. If music is your bag then you’ll want to pick up the new and exciting Rock Band 3. Jedis, ewoks, and gungans alike are anxiously awaiting Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II. Activision hopes the kids will get back into skateboarding games with Tony Hawk Shred (not to be confused with Tony Hawk Shrek). The Sims 3 looks like it’ll be the best console version of the franchise yet. Finally, if you’re late to the game, here are two collected editions with DLC and all: Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate Edition and Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition.

Red Mario 25th Anniversary Wii and DSi XL Coming November 7

Nintendo of America has announced that red versions of the Wii and DSi XL will be released in America to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. The bundles will be available on November 7, 2010. Here’s a snippet from the press release:

Red Wii Bundle: This limited-edition Wii hardware comes in beautiful red to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the original Super Mario Bros. game. The bundle includes New Super Mario Bros. Wii and a new red Wii Remote Plus controller, in addition to all the other included items, like Wii Sports and a red Nunchuk controller. It will be available while supplies last at a suggested retail price of just $199.99.

Red Nintendo DSi XL Bundle: This special-edition Nintendo DSi XL bundle is also red in honor of the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. and features three iconic Super Mario Bros.-themed graphics. The bundle comes with Mario Kart DS, which looks gorgeous on the extra-large screen. That’s in addition to the pre-loaded software of Brain Age Express: Arts & Letters, Brain Age Express: Math and Photo Clock. It will be available while supplies last at a suggested retail price of just $179.99.
