Red Mario 25th Anniversary Wii and DSi XL Coming November 7

Nintendo of America has announced that red versions of the Wii and DSi XL will be released in America to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. The bundles will be available on November 7, 2010. Here’s a snippet from the press release:

Red Wii Bundle: This limited-edition Wii hardware comes in beautiful red to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the original Super Mario Bros. game. The bundle includes New Super Mario Bros. Wii and a new red Wii Remote Plus controller, in addition to all the other included items, like Wii Sports and a red Nunchuk controller. It will be available while supplies last at a suggested retail price of just $199.99.

Red Nintendo DSi XL Bundle: This special-edition Nintendo DSi XL bundle is also red in honor of the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. and features three iconic Super Mario Bros.-themed graphics. The bundle comes with Mario Kart DS, which looks gorgeous on the extra-large screen. That’s in addition to the pre-loaded software of Brain Age Express: Arts & Letters, Brain Age Express: Math and Photo Clock. It will be available while supplies last at a suggested retail price of just $179.99.

Damn…I want both of these…but I’m not sure which one I want more. How about you? Do you want either of these consoles? If you dig both, which one would you buy first?

  1. i would love the red wii, just because i'm anti dsi non backwards compatibility. i'm waiting to for that game that nightshade tweeted last week, where nintendo is going to release a game that contains all the super mario brothers from the NES and even the dreaded lost levels game.

  2. I really like the look of that DSi XL, I would have thought they would have bundled a different game than Mario Kart. That game has been out for so long I would think anyone who likes Mario has already played it or owned it. Regardless, I would choose that DSi over the Wii.

    1. i like the dsi too but the backwards compatibility thing kills me that's why it's wii over dsi for me. i think mario kart is a bundled game because everyone wants it for the ds but that game is 34.99 i think that's too much for a game that's been out for 4 years. i think they want to get rid of some backstock in time for the 3DS launch.

      1. Thats a good idea about why they bundled Mario Kart. I agree $34.99 is too much for a game that has been out for four years.

I think the backwards compatibility lasted a long time for this generation. It lasted for two iterations of the last type (GBA, GBA SP) and this time for the DS and the DS lite. I am curious how many people out of the whole still play GBA games on their DS though, I wouldn't think it would be the majority, but I have no clue where those numbers would even come close to being.

      2. thank you for agreeing with my comment. i think if gba games werent being played as much Gamestop still wouldn't be selling them. there's probably not a big majority of the people who care but there's still some kind of a profitable market.

      3. Still profitable to some extent, perhaps. They (Gamestop) are always mentioning how they take a loss on buying back used games from us (the consumers) that they know they are never going to sell back (think Madden, 2k games, etc). For that reason am still unsure how profitable GBA games really are, but Gamestop doesn't seem to stick with consoles that aren't still selling.

      4. yes i agree with the consoles part but with the ds and ds lite being backwards compatible it still keeps gba and gbc games in play.

      5. That's a little like saying the 360 being backwards compatible keeps the xbox 1 games still in play, or the PS3 not being backwards compatible now killing the PS2 game market. But the opposite is what has happened, at least at the gamestop in my area. They no longer have any xbox 1 games but they still have PS2 titles.

It does seem to work much better for the Nintendo titles though, of course Nintendo is also good at having longer shelf lives for their games. Maybe this is just an area of shelf life that no one has paid attention too before, but if they had a longer shelf life when they were new then why not used as well?

      6. well in the gamestops by my house both, xbox and ps2 titles are available. i think it just all depends on area, not to sound uppity or whatever but i think areas where disposable income isn't big last gen games and consoles are kept around a lot more because they still sell.

nintendo does make games that last come one they keep re-making super mario bros and people like me keep buying every iteration, why because those games are good. i wish nintendo would get co-operation from developers more and gamers would stop bashing the wii because of the shovelware that's there. if you don't like the games don't buy them. nintendo's not forcing you to buy them. the last wii game i bought was SMG2 and now i'm going to buy kirby that's like 2 months gap or more. i don't mind it. would i like to play the wii more, yes but i can't complain about the games when i'm not buying them.

      7. That's probably a very good observation about the used games. Makes a lot of sense actually. And Nintendo has some great games like the ones you mentioned, sometimes I just wish there was more variety, but they will always be able to sell Mario that's for sure. I believe the number of games he has appeared in is over 200. I think most video game companies would love to make as much in a year as Nintendo does just from Mario, lol.

    1. It's like the equivalent of how if the Yankees don't make it to the WS again it's A-Rod's fault.

      1. I thought that was supposed to be Bush? Or Obama? Take your pick, as long as the buck gets passed :)

    2. With as big of a part of the industry as used games have become, yeah it definitely can always come back to them.
