This Week’s Videogame Releases

It’s a pretty solid week for new games. Leading the way is Doom III BFG, edition. If you don’t know much about this rerelease then be sure to watch Justin’s interview above. James Bond fans will want to get ready for the upcoming Skyfall with 007 Legends. Any Vita owners out there looking for Halloween frights? If so then Silent Hill: Book of Memories will scare you good. Looking for a quirky Japanese RPG with a distinct art style? Mugen Souls is just what the doctor ordered. Lastly, if you’re a PlayStation Plus member then be sure to take advantage of early access to The Unfinished Swan. It’s such a beautiful and unique game.

This Week’s Videogame Releases

A trio of interesting games hits store shelves this week. Leading the way is Resident Evil 6, which has been met with mixed reviews. Some critics are loving the game while others are kind of “meh” on it. It’s almost time for NBA basketball! To help you get ready for some NBA action, which by the way is fantastic, is NBA 2K13. The PlayStation Vita gets the next installment of one of the most underrated and under-appreciated games this console generation in New Little King’s Story. Hopefully Vita fans give this game some love.

Nintendo Land Preview Video (Wii U)

Justin and I got to spend time with two Nintendo Land mini-games: “Donkey Kong’s Crash Course” and “Mario Chase”. The former is a unique puzzle game that takes advantage of the Wii U gamepad’s gyroscope and tilt controls. The latter is a multiplayer racing game that’s a blend of Mario Kart and Pac-Man Vs. Kindly check out this video preview that features Justin’s thoughts on the minis and some footage of them (both onscreen and from the Wii U gamepad). After you’ve watched it, please let me know what you think of these two Nintendo Land minis. Is the game enough to make you want the Wii U Deluxe Set?

The Wonderful 101 Preview Video (Wii U)

Justin and I recently checked out The Wonderful 101 by Platinum Games for Wii U. The game is like a more violent Pikmin, but with Viewtiful Joe-style art. The brief portion of the game we saw looked and played great. The art and tone of the game was charming, while the gameplay was clever. Check out what Justin had to say about the game, as well as some gameplay footage onscreen and on the Wii U gamepad. After you’ve digested all of that, I’d love to hear your thoughts on The Wonderful 101. Is this something you’d buy?

This Week’s Videogame Releases

It’s a pretty loaded week for videogames! Fans of fighting and scantily-clad women will want to pick up Dead or Alive 5. If football is more your thing then FIFA 13 — available on pretty much every platform known to man — will do you good. Pro Evolution Soccer 13 doesn’t have the broad availability of its competitor, but many football fans I know think its the better series. Do you love birds and hate pigs? If so then Angry Birds Trilogy should be right up your alley. A few of my writer friends were surprised by The Testament of Sherlock Holmes. Wipeout 3 should satisfy fans of high-speed racing. I usually don’t include PC games on this list, but World of Warcraft: Mists of Panderia is simply too big to ignore.

Wii U Launches in America on November 18 For $299.99

Nintendo of America has announced the North American launch details for the Wii U console. Hitting store shelves on November 18, 2012, the Wii U Basic Set will be available for $299.99, while the Wii U Deluxe Set will be available for $349.99. Here are the differences between the two bundles according to Nintendo:

The Wii U Basic Set includes a white Wii U console with 8 GB of internal storage, one white GamePad controller, AC adapters for both the console and controller, a sensor bar and an HDMI cable. In the Wii U Deluxe Set, components are black. This bundle includes all elements from the Basic Set, as well as the Nintendo Land game, increased console storage capacity of 32 GB, a console stand, GamePad charging cradle and a stand that allows users to place the GamePad vertically on a table. Consumers who purchase the Deluxe Set also will be enrolled in the Deluxe Digital Promotion, which lets Wii U owners receive points for each digital download and redeem those points for future downloadable content from the Nintendo eShop. The promotion is currently planned through 2014.

As for the games, Nintendo listed a number of first-party and third-party titles that will be available within the Wii U’s launch window:

Additionally, Nintendo shared new information about dozens of games on the way for Wii U, including Nintendo Land, New Super Mario Bros.™ U, LEGO® City: Undercover, BAYONETTA 2, The Wonderful 101™, Capcom’s Monster Hunter™ 3 Ultimate and Activision’s Call of Duty®: Black Ops II. New Super Mario Bros. U offers unprecedented ways for friends and families to play together and explore Mario’s world using the GamePad. Nintendo Land, which will be available as a standalone game or included with the Wii U Deluxe Set, is a virtual theme park featuring a lineup of 12 playable attractions based on Nintendo’s greatest game worlds, including The Legend of Zelda™, Metroid™, Mario™, Animal Crossing™ and Donkey Kong™.

The selection of third-party games on the way for Wii U will include some of the industry’s biggest names and most beloved franchises. Activision is set to bring several of its leading properties to Wii U during the launch window, including Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Skylanders Giants™ and TRANSFORMERS PRIME™. Other third-party games coming soon to Wii U include Assassin’s Creed® III, ZombiU™, Rayman Legends® and Just Dance® 4 from Ubisoft, Madden NFL 13 and Mass Effect™ 3 from Electronic Arts, Scribblenauts™ Unlimited and Batman: Arkham City™ Armored Edition from Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two from Disney Interactive.

So there you have it! You know when it’s coming, you know what it will cost, and you know some of the games that will be available for the system. The question is, are any of planning to buy a Wii U? Why or why not?

Are you ready for some football?!? Madden NFL 13 comes out this week, which is always a huge deal in North America. If you’d rather fight it out in the unfriendly skies then Damage Inc. Pacific Squadron WWII might be your game. It’s a particularly sweet week for PlayStation 3 owners, with God of War Saga, inFamous Collection, and Journey: Collector’s Edition to choose from.

Read My WWE ’13 Preview at EGM (Please!)

Kindly check out my preview of WWE ’13 over at EGM. The game combines the infamous “Attitude Era” of WWF with current WWE Superstars and Divas. The story mode uses clips and angles from the Attitude Era, which makes total sense. I mean, how do you top the award-winning writing from SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 and SmackDown vs. Raw 2011?!? One way to do it is by going back to the most popular era of WWE history.

Now here’s the part where I quote myself:

Out of the new features revealed at the preview event, the “spectacular moments” clips were my favorite. These are achieved during particularly brutal moments in a match. For example, spearing someone through the barricade will trigger a spectacular moment that shows the move replayed several times from different angles and at different speeds. It makes the match seem more like a WWE broadcast and highlights the impact of big moves. There are even spectacular moments specific to matches like Hell in a Cell or TLC. I was playing a Hell in a Cell match as Shawn Michaels and superkicked my opponent off the top of the cage. Both of us marked out while the spectacular moment was played over and over again.

Yes, I superkicked Chris Jericho off of the Hell in a Cell cage and completely marked out at the event. It was awesome.

I also love that several WWE Superstars have current and Attitude Era versions of their characters. For example, you can play as Triple H or Hunter Hearst Helmsley!

Farewell Nintendo Power

It was sad hearing that Nintendo Power will be shutting down. Millions of Nintendo fans have been enjoying the magazine since the late ’80s. Like Egon Spengler said in 1984, print is dead — especially for people that want to read about videogames and videogame-related articles. That said, there was just something comforting about having longrunning magazines like Nintendo Power around. Yeah, you knew that the book was on the decline and that it would eventually go away, but you got warm fuzzies whenever you saw the logo or saw it at a newsstand.

While I’ve purchased dozens of Nintendo Power issues over the years, I couldn’t tell you the last time I bought one. Saying that I will miss the magazine has an empty ring to it. It’s more like…I’ll miss the nostalgic bliss the magazine conjured.

Google recently announced the release of the official YouTube app for PlayStation 3. The Xbox 360 has had an official app for some time already. With some typical Nintendo Internet silliness, you can enjoy YouTube on the Wii too. Do any of you use YouTube on your home videogame consoles?

As for me, I never do. Between my computers, tablets, and phones, I have several options that offer better YouTube experiences. That said, I understand that my situation is unusual.
