PlayStation Move Developer Diary: The Shoot

Here’s a Sony developer diary for The Shoot. It’s an interesting example of motion controls in a traditional game. With motion controls set to play a huge part of E3 2010, I wanted to hear what you guys and gals thought about this developer diary. While nothing beats hands-on experience, this clip should give you a good idea of what to expect from Move in a shooter.

This Week’s Console Game Releases

Last week was pretty much a dud, but this week’s videogame releases are here to save the day! On the multi-platform front you have Green Day: Rock Band and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11. The Nintendo DS has Mega Man Zero Collection for those of you looking for some old-school platformer excitement. Last, but certainly not least, is Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker for Sony PlayStation Portable.

What new games are on your wishlist this week?

Gran Turismo 5 Still Isn’t Out: Do You Care?

E3 2010 is just around the corner and Sony is set to reveal a ton of information, including the latest update on Gran Turismo 5. It feels like Sony has been talking about this game for 12 years. Yes, it’s finally coming out this year…but do you guys and dolls still care? (And yes, it’s fine if you say that you don’t care but still plan to buy the game — just admit it!)

Ico and Shadow of the Colossus in HD: Do You Care?

There’s an interesting rumor floating around that Sony will release HD versions of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus on one Blu-ray disc. The bundle would be similar to God of War: Collection. The “Team Ico” collection would be a great way to introduce new players to two great games and generate buzz for The Last Guardian. What I really want to know is are you going to go my way do you care?

I would absolutely love a Team Ico compilation. I adored Ico and wish more people bought it. The game is one of my favorite examples of “games as art” — its use of music, color, and fictitious languages was truly unique. I’d love for more people to experience the game. Perhaps it will do better as a re-release.

What say you?!? Do you care about a possible Team Ico collection?

Wipeout, Star Strike, and Mr. Pain Going 3D on PlayStation 3

Wipeout HD, Star Strike HD, and Mr. Pain will be getting downloaded patches on June 10 that allow the games to be experienced in stereoscopic 3D. As of this writing, the download date has only been confirmed for Japan. Andriasang has the skinny:

The three lucky first recipients of 3D support will be Wipeout HD, Star Strike HD and Mr. Pain. Current owners will be able to update Wipeout and Star Strike to 3D support for free. Mr. Pain will require a separate ¥300 purchase to unlock a 3D mode.

Those who haven’t purchased the games yet will of course still be able to buy them, with pricing set at the current ¥1,800 for Wipeout HD and ¥800 for for Star Strike. Mr. Pain will be available for ¥1,000, but even new purchasers will have to spend ¥300 extra to get the 3D mode.

It will be interesting to see how well these downloads perform. It’s a real chicken-and-egg scenario here (Aristotle was right, btw). There aren’t many gamers that can experience 3D on PS3, but until there are enough compelling titles available there’s no incentive to upgrade.

Mark Hamill to Retire as The Joker in Batman: Arkham Asylum 2

Actor and nerd icon Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker, Cocknocker) has done a tremendous job voicing The Joker in Batman: The Animated Series and Batman: Arkham Asylum. Sadly, his run as The Joker is coming to an end. He recently told IGN:

This will be my last, there’s no question about that. But it’s the last hurrah.

As a huge mark for Hamill (see what I did there?) and Kevin Conroy, I’m sad that the duo won’t be sharing the screen again. They are absolutely brilliant together. Like most people that grew up on Star Wars, Hamill was pretty much the coolest person on Earth to me as a kid. When I grew up and found out he was a comic-book nerd, my respect for him increased tenfold. I’m sad that he won’t be back as The Joker. On the plus side, I’m looking forward to Arkham Asylum 2 more than ever!

I know a few of you are big fans of Batman: The Animated Series. Are you going to miss Hamill? What are some of your favorite moments of him as The Joker? Did you think he meant he was retiring as The Joker for good or just from the videogame series?

Analyst Says PlayStation 3 Will Overtake Xbox 360 in Two Years

DFC Intelligence analyst David Cole believes that the PlayStation 3’s global installed base will surpass the Xbox 360’s in two years. Since the PS3 received a price cut in 2009, its momentum has been surging. In North America the price cut was accompanied by a marketing campaign that was far better than anything Sony has done since the PS3 launch. While Cole is confident in the PS3’s future, the one X-factor he cited was how well each console’s motion-console devices will sell. He told Industry Gamers:

Right now our forecasts are that the PlayStation 3 will have the momentum and is poised to overtake the Xbox 360 over the next two years. However, based on what we learn and see more specifically about Natal that could be subject to change. I would just say right now we haven’t seen anything yet that would make us change our mind.

What do you think of Cole’s statement? Do you think the PS3 will eventually overtake the Xbox 360? Will motion controls be a big factor in the race? Analyze that!!!

Front Mission Developer Diary 1: Bringing FM to an Action Setting

Double Helix and Square Enix kick off its Front Mission Evolved developer diary series in this video. The team talks about bringing the Front Mission universe to an action game. The previous installments were strategy games known for their tactical gameplay. This upcoming Front Mission game focuses on shooting action, but with strategic elements that stay true to the series.

Front Mission Evolved is set for a September 14, 2010 release for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Windows PC (in stereoscopic 3D). I loved the old FM games, but I’m not too interested (yet) in seeing the FM world in an action setting. Are any of you interested in this game?

SCEE President Andrew House Confirms PSN Premium Announcement

Last week I wrote about a rumor that Sony will unveil details on a premium version of its PlayStation Network service at E3 2010. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president Andrew House more or less confirmed the announcement. In a Sony Europe Q&A session he wrote:

I can assure you that the current PSN as you know it will remain a free service. It is something that our competitors don’t offer and something that shows our loyalty to the PlayStation Community. However, Kaz Hirai stated a few months ago that we were looking at a premium service to sit alongside the current free service and that objective has not changed. You’ll learn more about it very soon.

Now that you know it’s coming, I’d love to hear more about what you’d want in a premium version of PSN. Google TV? Cross-game chat? Free games? If PSN were alive, it would be Adam Lambert, asking you, “What do you want from me?!?”

George St-Pierre Wants You to Buy UFC Undisputed 2010

THQ’s UFC Undisputed 2010 is available in stores now. If you haven’t picked it up, George St-Pierre — arguably the best fighter pound-for-pound in UFC today — is here to sell you on the game. Watch GSP train outside the octagon and kick ass in it. Whether it’s the real GSP or the videogame version, I’m not going to argue with him. I like my limbs.
