U.S. Air Force Uses PS3 Consoles for “Cheap” Supercomputer

Here’s a cool factoid that’s a testament to the power of the PlayStation 3: the U.S. Airforce has used Sony’s console to construct an extremely powerful supercomputer for a relatively cheap price. According to UPI:

The U.S. Air Force used 1,760 Sony Playstation 3 video game consoles to create a supercomputer at about a tenth the normal cost for such a setup, officials say.

Named the Condor Cluster and to be unveiled Wednesday, it’s the fastest interactive computer the Defense Department has, the Air Force said.

Part of me wishes I was still at G4tv just so I could post this article and watch the flame wars. “PS3 am more powerfulz than Xbox 360! The Navy uses it! February 27th!!! Fore!!!”

Sony’s Kevin Butler Pitches PS3 Best Buy Bundles

Sony pitchman Kevin Butler is back and this time he’s hocking Sony Bravia televisions bundled with PlayStation 3 consoles at Best Buy. The commercial gets major points for using the music from CHiPs. Along with the New York Yankees’ Reggie Jackson and Starbuck from the original Battlestar Galactica, CHiPs’ Francis “Ponch” Poncherello was one of my childhood heroes.

This Week’s Videogame Releases

After 72 years of delays (not really), Sony is finally releasing Gran Turismo 5 for PlayStation 3. Whether or not the game is worth the wait, it’s sure to sell millions. The games I’m looking forward to this week are from Namco Bandai: Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom and Splatterhouse. Need some pop in your life? Then check out Michael Jackson: The Experience. Last, but not least, is Raving Rabbids Travel in Time.

Random note: as of this writing, GT5 is #2 and Michael Jackson: The Experience is #11 on Amazon’s videogame best seller list.

Exclusive: Heroes’ Greg Grunberg Confirms Role in L.A. Noire

In the immortal words of that Spike TV guy, I have a “worldwide exclusive”! Heroes actor Greg Grunberg confirmed his role in Rockstar Games’ upcoming L.A. Noire at EA’s Need for Speed Hot Pursuit launch event. The video above features Grunberg talking about the game and the unique motion capture used by Depth Analysis. I’m said that more people didn’t buy SmackDown vs. Raw. The people need games with superior writing and that game has the best writing (of any kind) of 2010. Combining platforms and market saturation have changed the way the top 10 has looked for the last few years — way fewer Wii exclusives on the list. I’m surprised  and pleased that NBA 2K11 and Fallout topped the list. Not that those games were release by “small” publishers, but it’s good for the business when Acitivsion and EA aren’t completely dominating the scene.

Marvel Pinball Featuring Spider-Man, Iron Man, and More

My buddy Cbake at Marvel just posted this cool video of the upcoming Marvel Pinball for PlayStation Network and Xbox Live. The game features Spider-Man, Iron Man, Wolverine, and Blade pinball tables with their respective villains making appearances. (On a side note, did Blade get in the game through affirmative action?) This Week’s Videogame Releases

Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood (with its outstanding collector’s edition!) leads this fun-filled week of videogame releases. Emma Watson fans will want to pick up Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. Need for Speed Hot Pursuit should satisfy those looking for some hot arcade racing. If classic platforming is your thing then you should give Donkey Kong Country Returns a look. NBA Jam is sure to catch fire this week. Sonic Colors looks like the best Sonic game in years.
