Poll: Is Kevin Smith Really Done Making Movies?

Director/writer (and nerd god) Kevin Smith claims that Hit Somebody will be his final movie…and really, what else is there to do after making a hockey epic? Seriously though, Cinema Blend has reported that:

Smith has confirmed that he will retire as a director following the filming of his next project. According to our source on the inside, the wonderful Katey Rich, he will instead focus on helping other people make movies. Whether this means that he will be serving as a producer or continuing to write is unknown.

If this is true, I’ll miss his work. While I thought he was an okay director at best, I loved his writing. The dialog in Clerks, Clerk II, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy is fantastic. Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back is one of my favorite fan-service movies of all time. If he’s truly done with movies, I hope that he spends more time scripting comic books (and delivering on time) but…

…I really don’t think he’s done making movies. I imagine that he’s frustrated with the industry and just needs a break. I believe that he’s convinced himself that he’s done, but I doubt things will pan out that way. He’s too good and too creative; he’ll want to be in charge of his own big-screen visions again.

What do you think? Is Kevin Smith really done making movies? Or is he just a frustrated artist that’s going through a moody patch? Kindly take today’s poll and share your thoughts!

Coffee Talk #290: What’s Your Keyboard of Choice?

After years of solid use, my Logitech Wave is on its last legs. I wanted to see what keyboards you guys and dolls like. Do you have a preferred keyboard? Or do just use the one that came with your PC?

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Rafael Nadal hopefully breaking his leg so he doesn’t win the Aussie Open, Verizon confirming $30 unlimited data for iPhone, or your favorite gourmet soda, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

After years of solid use, my Logitech Wave is on its last legs. I wanted to see what keyboards you guys and dolls like. Do you have a preferred keyboard? Or do just use the one that came with your PC?

Although the Wave has served me well, I miss typing on a mechanical keyboard. Most models are membrane or scissor-switch these days. I’m pretty sure that my next keyboard will be a mechanical, partially because I miss the crisp feel of those keyboards and mostly because I want to see if I can type loud enough to annoy my neighbors. Razer is supposed to send me a BlackWidow Ultimate for review and I’m hoping that it’s everything I want in a keyboard.

Now let me know about your keyboard preferences (please!).

Wizard Magazine Shutting Down, Digital Mag Coming

This morning I was sad to learn (via my friend Shane) that Wizard magazine has shut down. As a comic-book nerd, I loved reading Wizard. It was a great way to keep up with what’s now and what’s new in comics. I especially appreciated it during times I couldn’t afford to buy all the comics I wanted to read. Sadly, this excellent magazine is no more.

The good news is that Wizard World president Gareb Shamus has announced that the company is starting a digital magazine called — wait for it — Wizard World. The new venture kicks off in February 2011. I’m glad that Wizard will live on. I’m happy that it will evolve. Let’s face it — print is becoming less important every day. Hopefully Wizard World will adapt to the new medium and outdo its print predecessor.

Is AOL Scamming Old People?

My friend Dan at PC Magazine wrote an interesting article about AOL possibly taking advantage of older customers. By older, I don’t mean longtime customers; I’m talking about their age. Let’s face it, there are a lot of old people that use the Internet but aren’t exactly certain of what’s free and what’s not. Apparently AOL takes advantage of this. Here’s a damning quote from The New Yorker:

‘[M]any of [AOL’s subscribers] are older people who have cable or DSL service but don’t realize that they need not pay an additional twenty-five dollars a month to get online and check their email. “The dirty little secret,” a former AOL executive says, “is that seventy-five per cent of the people who subscribe to AOL’s dial-up service don’t need it”‘

That’s really shady. While I don’t expect AOL advertisements to say, “Hey, you can get this stuff for free, btw,” it looks like the company is engaging in deceptive practices. The whole thing makes me feel bad for old people that use the Internet.

A Weekend of DC Universe Online

So I finally started DC Universe Online over the weekend. It’s been an interesting experience so far. I’m glad that the game comes with a 30-day trial because I’m still not sure if it’s enjoyable enough to play it for more than that. Certainly I had fun with the game, but it has odd quirks and frustrating aspects. Here are my initial impressions — not a review! — of DCUO.

Character Creation — For my first character, I chose a hero on the Crisis server. A few of my friends are playing as villains, but I can’t bring myself to play that way. My character is a bow-wielding gadget-using super-speedster hero that’s mentored by Batman. The choices were perfect, since they allowed me to pay tribute to three of my favorite comic-book characters — Nightwing, The Flash (Wally West), and Arsenal. From a stats and characteristics perspective, creating a character in DCUO is simple and straightfoward.

I didn’t do too much in the way of customizing my hero’s physical appearance because…well, I kind of suck at it. I was able to quickly put together a character that looked acceptable through the game’s various templates. I was envious of dozens of the characters I saw online. With the customization tools, players made accurate versions of Marvel characters (saw an awesome Thor), videogame characters (loved the Ezio Auditore I encountered), and more. If you’re into creating facsimiles of your favorite characters from other worlds, DCUO appears to have powerful tools that let you do so.

Going Solo — For my first few quests, I went on solo mission. Everything I’ve encountered so far (I’m at level nine) is simple. I was repeatedly tasked with going to location X, beating up a certain amount of minion Y, and gathering a certain amount of object Z. After several minutes of hunting and gathering, I fought a boss. The gameplay template is super simple so far and would probably be a tad dull if it weren’t for all the awesome cameos. Encountering different DC Universe heroes and villains totally makes the quests. I love conversing with and taking orders from Batman, Zatanna, Martian Manhunter, etc.

What I don’t know is if it will remain interesting after several more hours. Will the mission structures get more complex? Will the cameos lose their charm? That remains to be seen. I should have a better idea after playing more of the game this week.

Forming Alliances — Playing the game with a friend is much easier and way more fun. Unfortunately, it’s also rather aimless and unorganized — at least in my experience. I tried several times with several parties to get voice chat to work. For various reasons, it just wasn’t happening. This made group questing a bit difficult. Typing on a gamepad is never fun, so my friends and I resorted to using AIM. Having to switch betwen my Dual Shock and my Google Chrome Cr-48 was a little annoying and made for a disjointed experience.

I have a call in to Sony Online Entertainment to see what the voice chat issues are. There’s a chance that my friends and I were trying to do it wrong. Still, something like this should be easy to use. The game would be much better, easier, and more fun with voice chat.

The Verdict So Far — I like the game so far, but I’m not sure it will hold my attention. I’m hoping that the quests become more complex and diverse. I’m really hoping that there’s a solution for my voice-chat woes. As it stands now, I’m not certain that I’ll play the game beyond the 30-day trial.

As always, let me know if you have any questions about DCUO. If you’re interested in playing with me, I’m “RPad TV” on Crisis. Super Buddies unite!!!

PSP2 to Feature OLED Screen and 3G Chip?

The latest batch of PSP2 rumors claims that Sony’s next portable gaming system will feature a multitouch OLED screen and 3G connectivity. The 3G would, presumably, be used for wireless multiplayer and game downloads. At least, that’s the word according to Nikkei.

As most of you know, Sony is holding a press event on Thursday and most pundits expect a PSP2 announcement. Past rumors include the PSP2 being capable PS3-level graphics.

An OLED screen makes sense since it offers more vibrant colors and potentially better battery life compared to LCD technology. 3G would be extremely useful, but it will be interesting to see how Sony handles the cellular chipset since various regions use different frequencies for 3G connectivity. It will also be interesting to see if there’s a charge for wireless service; some have speculated that the limited 3G would be free and subsidized by Sony, similar to how Amazon offers free 3G on its Kindle e-readers. Of course it takes much more data to download and play games compared to downloading a tiny e-book.

What do you think of the latest PSP2 rumors? Are you more interested in the system now that it’s purported to have an OLED screen and wireless 3G connectivity?

Any of you picking up new games this week?

Coffee Talk #289: What Are Your Gaming Parties Like?

ave you had videogame parties in the past? What games did you play? What’s the best food and drink for videogame parties? Did you encourage drinking and videogame driving?

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, your early pick for the Super Bowl, Sid Vicious/Justice getting arrested for pot, or Intelligentsia’s excellent Toarco Jaya Sulawesi Peaberry, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

RPadholic Slickyfats has been having his friends over for videogame parties and it got me wondering about all of your game gatherings. Have you had videogame parties in the past? What games did you play? What’s the best food and drink for videogame parties? Did you encourage drinking and videogame driving?

As for me, most of my videogame parties just happen. Keep in mind that most of my friends are in the videogame business. You get a bunch of us in one place and gaming will happen. Since most of us are decades-long enthusiast-gamers, we stick to casual things like Guitar Hero and Buzz! Quiz World. Playing anything “hardcore” would be like work.

Of course my dream videogame party takes place during a “Full Moon Party” in Ko Pha Ngan. *sigh* Those are so much fun…and they’d be even better with drunken gaming!

Now it’s your turn! Share your videogame party stories (please).

Excellent Chris Jericho Interview

Chris Jericho fans will want to check out this excellent transcript from a press conference conducted by Pro-Wrestling Illustrated. The presser took place in December, so some of the information is dated, but most of it is gold. Jericho candidly covers a wide variety of topics, giving some really excellent answers. It’s long, but totally worth reading.

If you have a moment, check it out and let me know what you think (please)!
