Coffee Talk #248: Drinking and (Videogame) Driving

Drinking and driving is irresponsible. It’s stupid and dangerous. It can lead to senseless tragedies. With that in mind, I’m a little embarrassed to admit that I enjoy drinking and videogame driving.

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, the RPad.tv merchandise sale, the SSD hard drive of your dreams, or getting sick before a launch event (grrrrrr), Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Drinking and driving is irresponsible. It’s stupid and dangerous. It can lead to senseless tragedies. With that in mind, I’m a little embarrassed to admit that I enjoy drinking and videogame driving. I’ve had some epic Mario Kart sessions with friends and the experience was enhanced by alcohol consumption. Part of it was the social lubrication alcohol often brings, but part of it was the sensation of trying to control something while I wasn’t in control of myself.

Tonight I’ll be attending a launch party for Need for Speed Hot Pursuit. The game will be there. I’m sure there will be plenty of alcohol there too. I’m actually looking forward to playing the game with my industry friends…while drunk.

Do any of you guys and gals play driving games while drunk? Or am I alone in this idiocy?

  1. I have limited interests in games when drinking unless it is a sports title.

I'm going to buy a SSD when I build a new PC after Christmas. I'm thinking a 128 will do and use a 640 platter for storage. Pretty sure Im going to buy an AM3+ board and get a bulldozer next year. Single thread sandybridge should out perform but for multithread bulldozer has no bottleneck.

    1. since i have no idea what you just said, i will reply by saying this

im too drunk to taste this chicken

    2. Why the 640? 1Tb prices are dropping like crazy with close to the same I/O speeds. Black Friday there are 1Tb WD 7200RPM for $59.

I have always been a big advocate of AMD. It has been a while since I rebuilt my PC though, I am still rocking a AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+. I like that AMD is support their “older’ tech with the “+” boards but it ends up hurting the performance of the newer chips like the Bulldozer chips. It will still be and awesome setup.

Integrated video, single card or Crossfire setup? I have 2 4850s and it is about time to ditch them.

Hybrid drives seem like a good intermediate step for me. I don’t know if I could justify the costs of a SSD drive when compared to the performance of my RAID 0 VelociRaptors.

    1. I actually chose not to write a story about this yesterday. It's an impressive number, but not really that interesting and totally expected considering the marketing money behind it.

      1. I just didn't think they would hit the million mark in just 10 days. I thought Kinect was going to pick up steam after Thanksgiving like all products, what if they sell over 5 million that would be on some almost Apple like status. Do you know the numbers for Move?

      2. Again, the marketing blitz was intense and ridiculously expensive. The numbers shouldn't be surprising.

On November 3, Sony announced that it "shipped" a million Moves.

      3. The Move is going to sell pretty well I think. I guess its a shock to me because of my stance on motion controls. I really did not think it would work but M$ did a great job of making sure the Kinect went controller less and differentiated itself from the Wii and the Move.

    2. God dang it TOKZ you stole my next post lol. 1 million units in two weeks suddenly makes the 5 million unit projection very real.

      1. And I'm full of jealousy right now, I stayed out and got hammered last night and I wanted a hazelnut D&D coffee this morning but woke up to late and had some shitty work coffee, BOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

      2. that sucks. would you find some solace in knowing that DnD got my coffee wrong. I ask for cream and sugar but i got sugar and no cream. I hate the way straight coffee tastes.

      3. it depends on what you're trying to say?

are you saying that you don't find solace in knowing my order was wrong?

or are you saying that it sucks when you get the wrong coffee?

      4. haha! you did a great job though, you just needed to get rid of "es no" and just make it "no sirve". oh and add something referring to it sucks when you don't get the right coffee. like" si amigo no sirve cuando pasa eso."

  2. I enjoyed playing Mario Kart 64 with my friends while drinking. We were a very rowdy and aggressive bunch without the alcohol while playing that game anyways though. But it was a great addition, as it meant we actually had to race each other instead of using some of the glitches on the maps (like beating Wario Stadium in under 1 minute). It was more fun to play Wario Stadium while drunk and have to plan out your stars and thunderbolts.

Other than that it is sometimes just Halo that I will play while drinking, or some other game that is pretty low involvement.

  3. @slicky
Going with the 640 because it isn't a primary machine, but 640 was the smallest I'd use. Video wise I'm going to see the 6970 and what it offers in terms of pushing out to my 46inch television. If it won't do well on its own I'll go with Xfire of cheaper cards.

  4. I love today’s topic! I first did that while playing NFS:Shift and I had a blast. Then I realized I just drove drunk, came in first place and no one got injured. If GTA lets people live out their wildest criminal dreams why can’t I be a virtual drunk driver?

    1. Todays coffee talk inspired me to get a pint of grey goose so I can drunk drive in split/second.

  5. i’ve never drank and drove in videogames. Maybe i should try that out.

    @launch event
i’ve never been asked to one but i’m sure it sucks. Maybe some alcohol will burn those bad germs out of you. feel better, Rpad!

  6. I enjoy going to Gameworks and getting drunk up in the bar and then going downstairs and playing
CAR RACING: Indy racing game with 7 other people.
FULL MOTION: that damn turret game that spins you around.
BOAT RACING: Hydrothunder is pretty good while drunk since you are enclosed 180 degrees and it has the wave bumps and tilting to feel like you are speeding.
HOT AIR BALLONS: Rising and falling 2 stories every 3 seconds is a good way to disorient you even more.

And the best game to play drunk at Gameworks is TOP GUN. 3 screens cover your entire view. Then you take off and the barrel rolls and twisting and turning and all of the on screen action make you sick…..I love it.

    Vidoegame Skateboarding sucks drunk!!!!

  7. My roommate just got back from watching the new Harry Potter movie. He said it was pretty good, and the Green Lantern preview was cool too. I do have to agree with him that I don't like how they used Ryan Reynolds for that role after he already was in Wolverine as Deadpool.

    1. Well bsu your friend might have an issue with chris evans being capt america after he played johnny storm/human torch in the fantastic four movies too. I dont mind it all as long as the story and acting is good.

      1. Yeah I will still watch Green Lantern, but I would rather see them keep the superheros consistent. As devil's advocate I know you could probably make the same argument about any actor playing a different character in anything else ever, just to point out the extreme of the issue at hand here. But I would rather see the comic books superheros/villains kept a little more separate than one actor playing multiple comic book characters.

On another note, I thought the remarks would be about how my roommate saw the movie about 2 days before release. haha. I was caught off guard when he said where he was going for the evening.

  8. I would love to see consistency but i learned from the first batman movies that you'll never get it. i.e money talks or they dont want to be type cast as a certain character for the rest of their lives. Im a little jealous of your roommate. I wish i couldve saw an early screening, im dying to see that GL trailer!

    1. Yeah I'm not really a fan of Harry Potter, but I will eventually watch it one day after it is out on DVD maybe. Still it would have been cool to see it so early.

Yeah money talks, everything else just doesn't get made. That's a valid point about casting someone for the rest of their life, but I think it would be nice to see happen sometime. A good example (ironically, considering our two separate topics here) would be Harry Potter, and how all of the actors/actresses (except for Dumbledore due to death) stayed the same throughout the series.

      1. Just dont forget about to watch it like iron man 2. Yeah i think youre seeing that happening right now with the new batman movies, iron man and now avengers movies. I just hope the trend keeps going.
