NPD Console Sales Figures Top 10 Games of November 2009

NPD Group has released its console software sales information for Novemer 2009. Activision’s Modern Warfare 2 put up some ridiculous numbers. While nobody should be surprised that MW2 topped the charts, some analysts were surprised by its complete ownage of November (it’s a financial term). All in all, the big titles did what they were expected to do, but there was one oddity in the top 10. Check it out!

New Super Mario Bros

  1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Xbox 360): 4,200,000
  2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PS3): 1,870,000
  3. New Super Mario Bros (Wii): 1,390,000
  4. Assassin’s Creed II (Xbox 360): 794,700
  5. Left 4 Dead 2 (Xbox 360): 744,000
  6. Wii Sports Resort (Wii): 720,200
  7. Wii Fit Plus (Wii): 679,000
  8. Assassin’s Creed II (PS3): 448,400
  9. Dragon Age: Origins (Xbox 360): 362,100
  10. Mario Kart Wii (Wii): 315,000

As a BioWare mark, I’m disappointed that Dragon Age didn’t do better. Sure, RPGs aren’t as popular as action titles and it’s a new IP, but I expect people to have better taste. Hmph. Nintendo has to be thrilled with its November. It sold a ton of new and old games. With so many new and excellent games released in November, I was surprised to see something as old as Mario Kart hit the top 10. To steal a line from Keanu Reeves or Joey from Blossom, “Whoa.”

Any thoughts on the November software top 10?

  1. Quite a gap in the multiplat for 1 and 2. Thought it would be a bit closer than that. Wonder why the disparity between the two?

Glad Super Mario Bros. Wii outsold their other crap from Nintendo. If it couldn't over take Wii Sports Resort or Wii Fit, I'd be crushed at the tards who buy games in the US.

  2. @Smartguy & MW2

Probably has to do with the install base difference here in the US. Sony still has a ways to go before it can over come the 360's year lead and it previous poor sales.

  3. @sandrock

Yeah, the install base can't be overlooked. I knew 360 would surpass the PS3 in MW2 sales, but not at a 2+ to 1 margin.

  4. Well, I for one prefer the 360's controls for FPS's. And I know a lot of people who feel the same. Plus if all your friends are playing it on the 360, you're probably more inclined to buy it on the 360 if you own both systems. Even the people I know on my friends list who own both a 360 and a PS3 are always online playing MW2 on their 360's.

  5. I'm with Nightshade on FPS. Although I'm not one of the people who bought MW2. I am proud to be one of the 362,000 that picked up Dragon Age. it's gotta be my favorite game of the year. I think I already have 8 different games going. I'm a little addicted. Although I was unsure of it at first it seems Bioware has done it again.

  6. Yeah, I'm not a big multiplayer gamer, so I just rented MW2 and played through the campaign. I may rent it again for the Spec Ops missions.

Dragon Age is the game I keep coming back to though. I'm supposed to be working on a review of Lego Indy 2, and yet I keep playing Dragon Age. The fact that Lego Indy keeps freezing up on me might have something to do with that…..

  7. Mario Kart is on this list? Really? Damn, Nintendo, I'm going to fly over to your headquarters in Japan so that you can touch me and turn me into gold.

    -M

  8. Lol, Midas touch.

    @Nightshade

I really enjoy the Spec Ops portion. The Echo missions on the hardest difficulty are awesome. In fact, you should only do spec ops on hardest

  9. @Smartguy: If I rent it again, it'll be through GameFly so that I can play it longer. I rented it last week from Blockbuster, and since they changed their rental policies (again) I don't see myself going back.

  10. @Nightshade – wasn't it agreed on earlier that it would forever more be known as Lackluster Video?

  11. I like Gamefly. It lets me play a lot of stuff I would have passed over in the store. The trick is keeping those games off your list until there's a dry spell of AAA new releases, or else you're more likely to get Monopoly than Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 due to lower demand.

  12. I find that overall I don't like game demos. It's hard to just tear a portion of a game out and give it to players without context and expect them to get a realistic appreciation for the game. I find with renting I can judge a game better because I'm getting the full package and not something that's chopped up.

  13. @nigthshade – my dad owns MW2 so I was actually able to play spec ops with my brother split screen on Thanksgiving. it was a ton of fun.

  14. I have a netflix account, if Gamefly were priced similarly (less than $10 per month) I'd consider it. I probably still wouldn't since I don't mind playing a demo, or buying a game.

I wait for titles to get cheap…unless it is something I have to have.

I really hope I get Dragon Age for Christmas.

  15. speaking of demos. the dante's inferno demo was actually entertaining, never expected it to be that fun.

  16. @RRODisHere Renting is a great option for people with limited funds.

@Iceman Yeah, I found that pretty nuts too. Crazy legs on that game…and I don't mean Crazy Legs from Don't Be a Menace in South Central While Sippin' Your Juice in the Hood.

  17. @Shockwave: I'm pretty sure my dad hasn't played a video game since he and I used to play RBI Baseball on the NES. However, watching my Stepfather try to figure out how to use both analog sticks at once with CoD2 was hysterical. After about 20 minutes I took it out and was like, "Here, play Tiger Woods golf instead."

    (insert Tiger joke here)

  18. @Nightshade

    @Raymond Padilla

I agree that it's hard to chop up a game for a demo. Imagine how Quantic Dream can possibly make a demo for Heavy Rain. I'm a little different than everyone else here it seems. I have limited funds and limited time so I don't have the time or money for average games. I only buy great games. If it's not great I don't even want to rent it or play it. I consider myself a hardcore gamer but I don't feel I have to play every game that's released. I feel the demos give you enough info to determine if the game is worth your time.

  19. This just in:

I'm watching ESPN right now and Atlanta Falcons DT Jonathan Babineaux has been pulled over and caught with 40 grams of marijuana. Sigh, when will these guys ever learn. He had a $25 million dollar contract, was it worth it?!

    @Smartguy

They also said that Sean Payton and Reggie Bush had a huge argument on the sideline last Sunday. It seems that Reggie isn't happy with his playing time.

  20. I've rented stuff that I wanted to try but had more then an inkling that it wouldn't be worth the full money down. Can't remember the last title I rented though.

  21. @Nightshade

Don't let Smartguy hear you say that. He and I have debated several times on how overrated he is. I consider him a bust.

  22. Sean Payton gets on to every player who gets neg yards or drops a pass. Nothing new. Don't read into that at all. Kinda like how Mike Smith gets on guys for drops and such.

Babineaux is stupid. I don't smoke pot, but I'm pretty sure if I did…I could wait til my NFL career was over to take up the habit again. So much money on the table..

  23. @LarcenousLaugh

If it's not worth full money down then why is it worth your time playing it?

  24. @Nightshade – that's funny. actually the first video game my dad played was GTA3. he loved it. he's not really in to vulgar stuff though so he didn't continue with the series. he just really liked the sandbox stuff.

He's retired military so he really digs FPS now. Halo, COD, and games like that are his absolute favorites. I did let him borrow my ps3 and Killzone 2 which he really liked too

  25. @RROD – I haven't liked most demos but I'm usually in the boat you are with renting. I feel I have the means to buy more games but I just don't have the time to play average games. I've considered gamefly but my days of going to the rental store praying they have the latest average game are over.

  26. Bush isn't overrated. He's misunderstood. Did anyone watch him at USC? He was the open field guy. LenDale White was the up the middle guy. If you seriously expected a player to come out of college and put up 40 yard TD runs every game, then you are mistaken. He's a hell of an athlete and has won games for the Saints. Without him, we would have lost to St. Louis and perhaps Miami.

Regardless (haha) he's a coverage nightmare for an opposing defense.

  27. Matt Ryan and Micheal Turner is still out and now one of our starting DTs got caught with pot and will be suspended so the Saints will trounce us this Sunday. Our season is pretty much dead.

  28. @Reggie Bush: He was never worthy of the #1 draft pick everyone was saying he should have been because he's not a complete back. He's Brian Westbrook. LenDale White made him much better at USC by pounding at defenses and wearing them down. Any back who requires a 2nd back to do the dirty work for him isn't worthy of the draft pick New Orleans spent on him. That's not to say he's not a good player, but worthy of the #2 pick overall? No.

  29. @Smartguy

The Saints would not miss Reggie. They trounced the Patriots while Reggie watch on the sideline. That should tell you something there.

  30. I agree with Nightshade. He not a bad player but he's definitely not worth the 2nd pick in the draft. When I saw Reggie in college all I saw was a lot of bad tackling from the defense. They don't miss too many tackles in the pros so Reggie can never get those big runs that he got in college. Maurice Jones-Drew was taken either 21st or 22nd that year and he's a complete back and much better than Reggie.

  31. @Nightshade

I was just about to question you putting Reggie up there with Westbrook. Glad you corrected yourself.

  32. @ R Pad

I'm so old school, when you say "Crazy Legs", I think of SCTV.

"Whatever you do… don't call him Crazy Legs."

  33. The days of the single back do all for teams is over. CJ, AP and Steven Jackson are how it used to be done. Lots of teams use more than one back.

I don't think Reggie was worth the 2nd pick either, but calling him a bust is a stretch.

  34. I think Bush is good, but the Saints aren't going to pay him what other teams are going to pay him, That is if the Saints even wan him back. I like the way Bush plays, he is especially a good compliment to Thomas/Bell. He is the fast outside runner while Thomas and Bell are the Bruisers running it up the middle for the tough yards. And beside Reggie dominates in the passing game whether it be picking up the block or going on for a pass, he gets it done.
