Poll: Is Kevin Smith Really Done Making Movies?

Director/writer (and nerd god) Kevin Smith claims that Hit Somebody will be his final movie…and really, what else is there to do after making a hockey epic? Seriously though, Cinema Blend has reported that:

Smith has confirmed that he will retire as a director following the filming of his next project. According to our source on the inside, the wonderful Katey Rich, he will instead focus on helping other people make movies. Whether this means that he will be serving as a producer or continuing to write is unknown.

If this is true, I’ll miss his work. While I thought he was an okay director at best, I loved his writing. The dialog in Clerks, Clerk II, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy is fantastic. Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back is one of my favorite fan-service movies of all time. If he’s truly done with movies, I hope that he spends more time scripting comic books (and delivering on time) but…

…I really don’t think he’s done making movies. I imagine that he’s frustrated with the industry and just needs a break. I believe that he’s convinced himself that he’s done, but I doubt things will pan out that way. He’s too good and too creative; he’ll want to be in charge of his own big-screen visions again.

What do you think? Is Kevin Smith really done making movies? Or is he just a frustrated artist that’s going through a moody patch? Kindly take today’s poll and share your thoughts!

Anne Hathaway is Catwoman!

Warner Bros. has announced that the absolutely delicious Anne Hathaway will play Catwoman (Selina Kyle) in The Dark Knight Rises. In less sexy news, Tom Hardy has been confirmed as Bane. As much as I enjoyed the Bane character in the comic books, I rather look at some Anne Hathaway pictures and discuss her playing Catwoman. I have all sorts of naughty thoughts in my head of her purring while crawling on all fours. Raaawwwwrrrr!!!

Andrew Garfield Likes Spider-Man Costume, Emma Stone

Andrew Garfield is enjoying his time working on the upcoming Spider-Man reboot. Well duh! Who wouldn’t enjoy getting paid millions of dollars to play around in a Spider-Man costume and make out with Emma Stone?!? People caught up with The Social Network actor to get his thoughts on the experience. Regarding trying on the costume for the first time he said:

It was humbling and strange, and I was really moved by it. It felt right. It felt wrong. Kind of all of the above. It was just a strange, surreal moment.

As for working with Emma Stone, who plays Peter Parker’s love interest Gwen Stacy, Garfield said:

She’s just an incredible actress, and she’s one of the most spirited people I’ve ever met and just incredible fun to be around generally. On top of which, she’s beautiful and talented and kind of impossible to dream up.

I like Andrew Garfield…but jealousy issues will probably have me hating him in a few months. Lucky bastard.

Did You Guys Ever See the Grayson Trailer?

Most of you know that I’m a big mark for Nightwing (Dick Grayson). As you can imagine, I loved John Fiorella’s Grayson. The trailer for Grayson went up before I “met” most of you. It’s super cool (except for the Green Lantern costume) and I hope you check it out. Share your thoughts when you have a chance (please).

Pic of Chris Evans as Captain America

Entertainment Weekly nabbed an exlusive pic of Chris Evans as Captain America from Captain America: The First Avenger. Similar to seeing Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, I keep seeing Evans as characters from his other movies. A lot of you know him as The Human Torch (Johnny Storm) from The Fantastic Four movies. Some of you will remember him as Lucas Lee in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. I will sadly admit that I remember him from Not Another Teen Movie.

Now that I’m embarrassed from admitting that I enjoy stupid parody movies, help me get over it by letting me know what you think of the costume (please). It was pretty cool in the renders and I’m digging how it looks in real life. Wucha think?

First Pic of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man

Sony Pictures has sent out an image of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man in the upcoming series reboot. It’s a pretty cool pic…but I keep seeing Eduardo Saverin in The Social Network. Perhaps Spidey will fight the Winkelvoss twins in the movie. That would be cool.

I’m psyched that an image of Garfield as Spider-Man has been released. Until now, fanboys were spending too much time discussing Emma Stone’s (Gwen Stacy) hair. This should help them move on.

Anyway, enjoy the pic and share your thoughts (please)!

The Chaperone Trailer Starring Triple H

You must watch the trailer for The Chaperone starring WWE Superstar Triple H (Paul Levesque). It’s one of the worst trailers I’ve seen in years. Hunter has been one of the most consistent WWE wrestlers for the last 15 years. As a movie lead, his career is off to a remarkably crappy start.

On a side note, why don’t more WWE fans find it strange that wrestlers that suffer “severe” injuries and disappear for months return with a movie in the pipe?

What’s Your Favorite Pixar Movie?

I finally got around to seeing Up…and I loved it. It’s a Pixar movie, duh! My taste in Pixar movies is a little bit different from most of my friends’. I prefer Pete Docter’s stuff over Andrew Stanton’s, for example (Monsters Inc. is so underrated). At the end of the day, my favorite Pixar film is The Incredibles — great storytelling, fantastic emotion, and awesome music by Michael Giacchino. How about you? What’s your favorite Pixar flick?

Larry Sanders Show and Judd Apatow’s Greatness

I spent a large chunk of yesterday watching The Larry Sanders Show marathon on IFC. A lot of people love the show for the fantastic performances by Garry Shandling, Rip Torn, and Jeffrey Tambor. One of the men behind those performances was Judd Apatow, who directed, produced, and wrote several episodes of the show.

Apatow has been in the entertainment business for decades, but he only recently received mainstream acclaim for movies like The 40-Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up. His television series Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared were loved by critics, hipsters, and nerds alike, but didn’t perform well in the ratings department. While Apatow is a household name these days, he flew under the radar during The Larry Sanders Show’s wonder years. Looking back at the the show’s deft writing and directing, it’s clear that Apatow was capable of great and hilarious things. It just took  a long, long time before he struck gold (on his own) with a mainstream audience.

Out of curiosity, do you enjoy any of Judd Apatow’s movies or TV programs? Share some of your favorites (please)!

Coffee Talk #272: Your Favorite Movies of 2010

2010 was full of fantastic movies. Let’s talk about our personal favorites! I’ll kick it off by giving you my top three movies of 2010. None of them should surprise you…though the order might.

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, some republicans accusing the NBA of being anti-Christmas, Scarlett Johansson getting divorce papers for Christmas, or your holiday shopping nightmares, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

2010 was full of fantastic movies. Let’s talk about our personal favorites! I’ll kick it off by giving you my top three movies of 2010. None of them should surprise you…though the order might.

3) Iron Man 2 — My future wife, Scarlett Johansson, was so hot in this movie, but I enjoyed IM2 for way more than her. The action was fantastic, it was great that Iron Man and Tony Stark had separate villains, and I really enjoyed the setup for future Marvel movies (Captain America, Thor, The Avengers). I had some problems with movie, as seen in my lengthy not-a-review here, but I mostly loved it — especially Robert Downey, Jr. as Tony Stark. That’s just perfect casting.

2) The Social Network — On paper, this movie had to be awesome; it’s hard to argue with the team-up of David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin. That said, I had a hard time envisioning how a Facebook movie could be entertaining and intriguing. The Social Network was all that and more. The movie absolutely obliterated my expectations. The snappy writing, deft delivery, and wonderful score added up to one of my favorite dramas ever. Sure, it doesn’t convey the sheer amount of work hours that went into making Facebook and a great deal of it was Sorkin fiction, but the creative liberties are a huge reason why The Social Network succeeds as a film.

1) Get Him to the Greek — Most of you know about my man-crush on Russell Brand. I’m convinced that he’s on the verge of immortal greatness. Get Him to the Greek wasn’t it, but it shows glimpses of why he might get there. The movie is a well-paced romp with some hilarious moments courtesy of Jonah Hill, Sean “P.Diddy” Combs, and Colm Meaney. The “Furry Walls” scene is one of the most hilariously ridiculous things I’ve ever seen in my life. All that aside, the way Brand delivered some of his lines totally killed me. He’ll take something that’s mildly amusing on paper and turn it into a laugh-out-loud moment in real life (LOL IRL?). I’ve watched this movie a ton and subjected several friends to viewings. All of them loved it. If you haven’t seen it, I truly hope you give it a chance.

Honorable Mentions — There were a bunch of comic-book movies I loved in 2010 too. Batman: Under the Red Hood impressed me so much that I wrote a Coffee Talk about it. While some of changes and omissions made it way different from the comic book, I enjoyed Scott Pilgrim vs. the World on its own. Kick-Ass was a more faithful adaptation, though Hit Girl was the real star of the movie. There was something sickly entertaining about watching a 10-year old girl viciously slaughter dozens of people.

Now it’s your turn! What were some of your favorite movies of 2010? Make a list, check it twice, and explain your choices (please)!
