Rediscovered Red-Crested Tree Rat is Really a Pokemon

The red-crested tree rat hasn’t been spotted since 1898, so scientists were thrilled to encounter one earlier this month. Too bad it’s nothing more than a frickin’ Pokemon! Just look at it. It’s obvious that this thing isn’t a “normal” creature. I’m also certain that it doesn’t call itself a red-crested tree rat. It surely has a cute Japanese-sounding name that it repeats over and over again.

Come on guys. Back me up on this one. Don’t you think this so-called red-crested tree rat is just a Pokemon?!?

XGD3 Issue = New Xbox 360 + 1 Year of Xbox Live

Are you one of the lucky Xbox 360 owners with a system that’s incompatible with the new XGD3 disc format? The new format allows for an additional 1GB of disc storage and helps Microsoft combat piracy. It’s also incompatible with a small number of Xbox 360 units already on the market.

If you have an incompatible system then Microsoft will hook you up with a 250GB Xbox 360 Slim and one year of Xbox Live service. The compensation was discovered by a Reddit user and confirmed by Microsoft.

Now please excuse me as I’m going to stare really hard at my Xbox 360 and try to make incompatible through my mutant powers.

iOS Cheapies = Big Fun for 99 Cents, Less Console Sales

I bought a bunch of 99-cent games for my iPad 2 last weekend. They were all on sale for a limited time, so I figured, “What the hell.” I’ve played all but one and I’m floored by their value. Sure, they’re not as deep as their PlayStation Portable and Nintendo DS equivalents, but they’re close. And besides, similar games for those platforms cost 30 times as much. Here’s what I picked up:

Let’s Golf 2 — It’s like Mario Golf lite. The control options aren’t as extensive, but I’m still having loads of fun with this game.

Baseball Superstars Pro 2011 — It’s like Mario Baseball lite. This game blends arcade baseball with RPG mechanics.

Eternal Legacy — This is a Final Fantasy-like RPG. Out of the games I picked up, this had the most depth. It’s on par or deeper than several RPGs I’ve played on the DS and PSP. It doesn’t have as much polish as most Square Enix games, but it’s also much cheaper than most Square Enix iOS titles.

Death Rally — I haven’t gotten around to playing this vehicular combat game, but I’ve been hearing great things from friends. It’s made by Remedy (Max Payne, Alan Wake) and I was curious to see what a traditional game developer would do on the iPad.

These kinds of games are indicative of a major shift in the gaming business. Some analysts are predicting doom and gloom for traditional consoles. I wouldn’t go that far, but I definitely see more and more people spending more and more money on Android and iOS games. Most people think before dropping $30 to $60 on a console game that will entertainment them for a dozen hours or more. Buying a dozen hours of entertainment for a $1 is a no-brainer.

Additionally, most people need phones to keep in touch with family, friends, and work. Playing games on something you already have is a bonus. Compare that to a gaming console, which is a pure luxury purchase.

What do you guys and dolls think? Will cheap gaming on phones and tablets cut into the console market?

Infinity Blade: Arena Adds Multiplayer and More

I’m psyched for this update. Infinity Blade is a sterling example of what mobile games can be. I’m looking forward to swinging my sword (get your mind out of the gutter!) in multiplayer. Any of you down to play with me?

Coffee Talk #353: Game and Movie Check-Ins

Check-in services are hot right now — I’m talking Hansel hot. One recent trend in the check-in space is allowing people to check into the media they’re enjoying. More than one-million people use…

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, the Yankees sucking, the return of sucky AJ Burnett, or Arnold Schwarzenegger’s bastards, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

As some of you know, I enjoy foursquare, the check-in service that lets you keep tabs on your friends and discover new places. Check-in services are hot right now — I’m talking Hansel hot. One recent trend in the check-in space is allowing people to check into the media they’re enjoying. More than one-million people use GetGlue to check into the movies and television shows they enjoy. The recently launched IGN Dominate allows people to check into their games. Would you use any of these services?

For some people, all of this is nonsense — just new ways and new toys to waste time. Some people get checking into physical locations; foursquare is a great way to discover new restaurants, spas, coffeehouses, etc. Checking into media seems strange to some, but totally cool to others. You can discover new games, TV shows, and movies to enjoy, similar to how you can discover new physical venues with foursquare.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on all these services. Would you use them? Do you find them useful? Do you think they’re weird? Or is this all just a technologically advanced way to waste time?

HBO Go Users Get Two New Episodes of Game of Thrones

In a brilliant promo, HBO will let its HBO Go customers see two new episodes of Game of Thrones this coming Sunday, instead of one. The first episode will be available on television and HBO Go streaming, while the second episode will be an HBO Go exclusive for one week. HBO Go has been getting rave reviews and the app — available on Android and iOS — has already been downloaded one-million times. A promo that combines the app with one of HBO’s hottest shows will surely be a success.

Unfortunately for me, my crap bag cable provider — Time Warner Cable — does not allow its customers to use HBO Go. I’d love to watch two new episodes of Game of Thrones on Sunday, but Time Warner is denying its customers an excellent HBO service and my building isn’t wired for AT&T U-Verse or satellite.

I’ve been incredibly satisfied with streaming movies and television on my iPad 2. Netflix, Crackle, and the Time Warner Cable app have been great. I’m so bummed that I won’t be able to take advantage of this Game of Thrones promotion (unless Time Warner Cable removes its head from its ass this week).

Any of you using HBO Go? Are you happy with the app and service? Are you psyched for the Game of Thrones promo?

iPhone “4S” Coming to All Four Major American Carriers?

The latest rumor on the next iPhone has Apple’s upcoming handset named the iPhone 4S. More importantly, it might be available on all four major American carriers. That’s the word according to Jefferies & Co. analyst Peter Misek. Here are more details from Forbes:

“According to our industry checks, the device should be called iPhone 4S and include minor cosmetic changes, better cameras, A5 dual-core processor, and HSPA+ support,” he writes in a research note.

He also says that “industry checks indicate Apple will likely announce Sprint, T-Mobile, and China Mobile as new carriers.”

The iPhone on all four majors would be huge for Apple. It’s already killing the competition on two carriers. Being available on all four would only extend its dominance.

Are you considering the iPhone 4S? Which carrier would you want it on?

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (Not) Review

Last week I caught a screening of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. I loved the first Pirates movie. I loved half of the second movie and 40 percent of the third movie — both were messy romps that were all over the place. With that in mind, I was apprehensively looking forward to a new Captain Jack Sparrow adventure. I was curious to see if director Rob Marshall could tighten up the Pirates series. He did. On Stranger Tides is much more coherent than the second and third Pirates of the Caribbean movies, but it lacks some of the charm of its forerunners. Here are several random thoughts (not a review!) on the film. There be spoilers ahead, matey!!!

Captain Jack Sparrow, Hector Barbosa, and Everyone Else: There was a sharp drop-off after these two characters. Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush were expectedly awesome. There were other decent performances, but nobody else could hold a candle to these guys. Sadly, Kevin McNally’s Gibbs — a character I really like — wasn’t given as much time to shine as in the previous films. Most of the movie felt like Depp, Rush, and a bunch of understudies.

Keira Knightley Was Missed: Touching on the previous point, Penelope Cruz did a decent job as Angelica and the movie’s principal eye candy. However, she was not nearly as charming, interesting, or sexy as Keira Knightley. The writers tried to give Angelica layers, but it all felt rather predictable.

Blackbeard Was Meh: I was also mostly unimpressed with Ian McShane’s Blackbeard. I just didn’t find him intimidating at all. Barbosa and Davy Jones were wonderful antagonists in the previous films. Blackbeard felt like an old guy with a remote-controlled ship. He’s supposed to be “the pirate that all pirates fear”, but he didn’t come off as fearsome.

Coherence at Last!: As I mentioned in the intro, the second and third movies were all over the place. On Stranger Tides was much more coherent. Everyone had clear goals and motivations. It was easy to understand where everyone was going and why. It just made much more sense than the last two films.

Kickstart My Heart: The first 20 minutes of the movie are action packed. They’re full of fight scenes, chase scenes, etc. This caught me by surprise. It was a great way to kick off a summer blockbuster. I kept waiting for the action to die down, but more and more kept coming. I kept asking myself, “Can I breath yet?”

Mermaids are Hot!: The mermaids in this movie were incredibly sexy. The first mermaid the crew meets was played by the gorgeous Gemma Ward. The mermaid with an actual plot line was played by Astrid Berges-Frisbey. She just looked stunning and ethereal on the big screen. I would have been content watching her eat bread for 90 minutes. Just beautiful.

Missionaries are Boring: I couldn’t stand Philip the captive missionary. Part of it had to do with the fact that I generally don’t like preachers. Part of it was because his romance with the mermaid Syrena  felt lame and forced. I’m sure that part of it — more than I’d actually admit — had to do with me not wanting to see the gorgeous mermaid end up with the lame-ass missionary.

Wrap Up: I enjoyed Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. It was a fun adventure with two great characters and a bunch of beautiful people. The 3D was neat, the pacing was great, and the action was fun. Although this was a much tighter film than the last two, it just wasn’t as charming. In wrestling terms, it’s like comparing a remarkably consistent match to a wreck full of amazing high spots. Out of the two summer blockbuster screenings I’ve attended in 2011, I’d recommend seeing Thor over Pirates 4.

If you happen to catch On Stranger Tides, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the movie. Kindly share and discuss!

This Week’s Videogame Releases

There’s only one notable game coming out this week, but it’s a huge one — Rockstar Games’ LA Noire. As with most Rockstar titles, this game has been getting a ton of hype. Will it truly be the unique and stellar game some are making out to be? Or will it just be another good game? More importantly, are you buying it this week?
