What Do You Think of the PlayStation Vita?

One of the biggest surprises of E3 Day 0 was the PlayStation Vita. Everyone knew that the hardware was going to be powerful since details were known when the system was codenamed NGP. The big surprise was the price point — $249 for the WiFi model and $299 for the 3G/WiFi model. That’s a bit cheaper than people were expecting. The recently released Nintendo 3DS retails for $249 and uses older technology (CPU, GPU, screen, etc.). Compared to the Vita, Nintendo’s portable system seems like a rip-off at the same price.

Then there was the AT&T “surprise”. On paper it makes sense; AT&T is the largest GSM carrier in America and would get more customers for the 3G version of the Vita. In reality, AT&T blows in some major American cities, such as New York and San Francisco. Tech writers have been bashing AT&T’s poor and inconsistent service for years; it tarnishes millions of iPhone experiences and will likely tarnish PlayStation Vita experiences. It was absolutely hilarious to hear the crowd groan when Sony announced its partnership with AT&T.

I’m absolutely high on the Vita. I’ve played with it and wish I could show you games like Sound Shapes (it doesn’t look all the impressive, but it’s so much fun!). Now that pricing and carrier information has been revealed, I wanted to get your updated thoughts on Sony’s next portable system. Please fire away with your PlayStation Vita musings!

Coffee Talk #362: Random Pre-E3 Chatter

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, the villainous Heat stealing yesterday’s game in Dallas, the villainous Rafael Nadal beating the noble Roger Federer in another French Open final, or stupid PR agencies down the block from your apartment, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Yesterday’s E3 festivities were fantastic. I went to the excellent B4 party held by47 Communications and caught up with all sorts of groovy friends. Game Informer’s Andy McNamara dropped a ton of weight and looks fantastic. I’ve dubbed him Andy Mc Lite. BioWare’s Dr. Greg appears to be hitting the weights. His biceps were pretty impressive. Naturally, I accused him of using steroids and/or HGH. After the party some of my industry friends from Japan wanted to get a large American burger, so we went to The Counter. The gaijin portions kicked their asses.

Socializing aside, it was great confirming a bunch of pre-E3 rumors. Most of what you’ve been hearing is true. Some of the best stuff I heard about and two games that are supposedly awesome won’t even be at the show. It looks like those games/products will be Tokyo Game Show 2011 or E3 2012 announcements.

Since I’m going to be hopping around downtown Los Angeles all day, kindly chat it up in the comments section. Please let me know any hot E3 rumors that interest you and I’ll try to follow up on them. I’m also counting on one of you to keep me up to date with Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference keynote. I wish I could be up in San Francisco for that as it sounds exponentially more interesting than Microsoft’s presser.

Coffee Talk #361: Stupid Crap You’ll Hear From E3 2011

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Klatch’s El Salvador Orange Bourbon, Stuart Scott still bringing his A-game while battling cancer, or hot garbage you hear from PR people, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

The Electronic Entertainment Expo is the most amazing trade show in the world. It’s such a cool and unique spectacle. There’s really nothing else like it…but that doesn’t mean you won’t hear stupid crap coming out of the show. Every year you hear about journalists whining and complaining about covering E3. They’ll write about how their feet hurt, how the food sucks, how they have too many appointments, etc. At the end of the day, they still get to see awesome videogames way before the general public. That beats the hell out of coal mining or shoveling dung at the zoo. For the life of me, I’ll never understand why journalists complain about going to an event that millions of people dream about attending.

One stupid thing I expect to hear over and over again at E3 2011 is how awesome the screen is on the Sony NGP/PlayStation Vita. I’m sure it will be a great screen, but I also expect a lot of writers to be all, “This AMOLED screen is amazing because it’s AMOLED!!!” A lot of videogame journalists can’t tell you the difference between TFT LCD, IPS LCD, OLED, AMOLED, Super LCD, Super AMOLED, and Super AMOLED Plus screens. They’ll rave about technology they don’t understand, simply because it’s new to them and the press release told them that it’s awesome (and they can’t be bothered to do research). I expect to read several articles that mention how awesome the Vita’s screen is, but don’t explain why it’s awesome and how it compares to other screen technology.

How about you guys and gals? What dumb stuff do you expect from E3 2011?

Nintendo 3DS Getting 3D Pokedex on June 6

The Nintendo 3DS is getting a significant software update on June 6. I’m not at all interested in the new web browser. I should be excited by the new (and way late) Nintendo eShop online store. What really has me excited is the 3D Pokedex for Pokemon Black/White! Here are some details from the press release:

Within the Nintendo eShop, Nintendo 3DS users will also be able to download the free Pokédex 3D application and start collecting data for more than 150 Pokémon from the Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version games. This new application lets users view each Pokémon in 3D with animated motion and sound. The Pokémon image can be rotated 360 degrees, allowing users to zoom in and view it from any angle. The detailed Pokédex also allows users to search, sort and filter all of the data they receive in a variety of ways, making it the essential guide for Pokémon fans. Players can complete their Pokédex by sharing data with friends and using the SpotPass feature, or by scanning special Pokémon AR Markers (augmented-reality markers). Once users have received data for a Pokémon, the AR Viewer allows them to view that Pokémon image in a real-world setting in real time, and create photos to share with friends.

Unfortunately for me, I’ll be busy with that E3 thing when the 3D Pokedex hits. I’d love to spend hours just messing around with it. Priorities….

AT&T CEO Unsure If You Can Buy Unlocked iPhone

At the D9 conference, AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega claimed that AT&T customers could buy an iPhone at full price and get it unlocked. He later backtracked on that statement and said he needed to verify it. Here’s a clip from Engadget’s live blog:

Ralph just said he “needed to verify” that you couldn’t buy an unlocked GSM iPhone from AT&T. He so clearly has no concept of this — the entire audience confirmed for him that even a full-price iPhone is locked to AT&T, making it useless to those who travel overseas and want to use a pre-paid SIM in whatever nation they land in. Pretty sad, actually.

Being able to unlock an iPhone without jailbreaking it would be tremendously useful to AT&T customers that frequently work and play in other countries. AT&T does not allow this and it’s completely laughable that its CEO is ignorant of this fact. Moron. It would be awesome if AT&T changed its policy so that its CEO didn’t look like a total ignoramus.

What Do You Think of Windows 8 So Far?

Microsoft has released details and videos on its upcoming Windows 8 operating system. The new OS will run on traditional PCs (mouse and keyboard) as well as touch devices. From a UI and UX perspective, it’s a radical departure from Windows 7. Check out the video above to see the new UI and UX.

While I know it will have several cool and powerful features, I’m unimpressed with the debut video. I’m oversimplifying it, but Windows 8 looks like a version of Windows 7 with a Windows Phone interface slapped on.

The general vibe I get from Windows 8 is that Microsoft is trying to run ahead of Apple, but is stumbling trying to do so. It’s no secret that touch will be an integral component of future versions of Mac OS. In my head I see Steve Ballmer screaming, “We need to do that too!” and not really caring how the company gets there. While there are several features in the video that look “neat”, I just see Apple integrating touch in a better and more elegant way.

Kindly check out the video and let me know what you think of Windows 8’s debut.
