Liev Schreiber to Play Chris Benoit in Crossface?

[Update 12:40PM PDT] The latest rumor on Crossface, the Chris Benoit biopic, has Liev Schreiber playing playing the Canadian Crippler. Benoit, as most of you know, was a brilliantly talented professional-wrestler whose life ended in a grisly tragedy when he killed his wife and son before taking his own life. Schreiber is known by geeks for his role as Sabretooth in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, while boxing fans know him as the narrator for the 24/7 series.

The story was reported by MoviePilot and should be taken with a huge grain of salt, as the site uses a mix of posts from professional writers and fans. While many web sites are using this article as the source, very few have noted that it’s a “contributor” post. The post doesn’t list anyone involved with the movie as confirming the information. It could very well turn out to be legit, but I’d wait for confirmation from the studio or a reputable journalist.

Anyway, how do you feel about Crossface? Some people are uncomfortable with the movie being made. Are you down with Sabretooth playing the the Rabid Wolverine?

[Special thanks to my friend and Bret Hart mark Joey for the tip!]

CM Punk Gets Restraining Order Against His Mom

According to TMZ, WWE Superstar CM Punk has obtained a restraining order against his mother. Punk’s mother has allegedly hit him up for tens of thousands of dollars, threatened to commit suicide unless given money, and threatened to release embarrassing information about her son unless she was given dough. On paper, it sounds like a sad tale of a mother taking advantage of her (relatively) recently famous and successful son. Here’s a clip from the article Continue reading “CM Punk Gets Restraining Order Against His Mom”

El Generico Debuts on NXT as Sami Zayn

As an indie-wrestling fan, I’ve watched a bunch of El Generico matches at Ring of Honor and Pro Wrestling Guerilla events. As many of you know, I was a big mark for Claudio Castagnoli’s indie work. With those factors in mind, it was cool watching Claudio and Generico duke it out as Antonio Cesaro and Sami Zayn on the last episode of NXT (highlight clip below). While Claudio has shown that he can be a WWE star, I’m not quite sure about Generico’s future. Part of it is that I’m used to seeing him wrestle in a mask as The Generic Luchador and it’s just weird seeing him without it. While he has strong in-ring skills and good charisma, I’m not sure if his talents mesh with WWE creative. Like Claudio, CM Punk, and Bryan Danielson, I’ll be rooting for him.

Check out the highlights of Antonio Cesaro vs. Sami Zayn below and let me know what you think of the new El Generico. Can you see him as a full fledged WWE Superstar?

Coffee Talk #585: Austin Aries, Christy Hemme, and Fines

TNA Wrestling’s Austin Aries has been fined for an on-air incident with announcer Christy Hemme. On the last episode of Impact Wrestling, Hemme announced the wrong tag-team while Aries and partner Bobby Roode were making their way to the ring. A-Double played up his heel persona by getting in Hemme’s face, telling her to announce the correct team, and eventually putting his crotch in her face. TNA president Dixie Carter tweeted that the company “has ZERO tolerance for inappropriate behavior.” According to TMZ, Aries has been…more

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, the dreaded triumvirate of physical pain, flu, and stomach problems, Koreatown’s new vape shop, or Google I/O happenings, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

TNA Wrestling’s Austin Aries has been fined for an on-air incident with announcer Christy Hemme. On the last episode of Impact Wrestling, Hemme announced the wrong tag-team while Aries and partner Bobby Roode were making their way to the ring. A-Double played up his heel persona by getting in Hemme’s face, telling her to announce the correct team, and putting his crotch in her face. TNA president Dixie Carter tweeted that the company “has ZERO tolerance for inappropriate behavior.” According to TMZ, Aries has been slapped with a “severe fine.”

Some of the Internet reactions have been harsh. Some have accused Aries of bullying and sexual harassment. That seems ridiculous to me. Aries is a heel — a pro-wrestler that’s acts like a villain. He’s playing a part. This is, after all, a character that refers to himself as, “The greatest man that has ever lived.” Of course he’s going to get annoyed and act like a dick when the announcer botches his entrance. Hemme’s mistake was insulting, so Austin Aries — the character — insulted her in retribution.

A few people have compared the situation to Bryan Danielson (Daniel Bryan) getting fired from the WWE for choking announcer Justin Roberts with a necktie. Certainly there are similarities, but ultimately both punishments were stupid. That said, I understand WWE’s stance more than I do TNA’s. WWE has been upfront about making its programming “PG.” Danielson crossed a (vague) line and was unemployed for a short time before being rehired by WWE. As far as I know, TNA doesn’t have the self-imposed restrictions that the WWE has.

While Aries’ actions were improved, a crotch to the face isn’t the worse thing wrestling fans have seen. Triple H once simulated necrophilia. Kane covered Jim Ross in gasoline and set him on fire. Paul Bearer was buried alive. From that standpoint, I don’t see what the big deal is here. Some are claiming that Hemme was put in an uncomfortable situation. I would completely agree with that…if Aries and Hemme weren’t characters that were part of a show. While I don’t condone men shoving their crotches in women’s faces, the act made sense for the Austin Aries persona. They’re actors on a stage, not accountants in an office.

Obviously I’m biased. Some of you are aware that I know and like Dan Solwold, the gentleman that portrays Austin Aries. As a friend, I’m supposed to stand by him when he’s wrong. The thing is, I really don’t think he did anything wrong. Of course, I’d love to hear your take on the matter. Do you think that Austin Aries crossed a line? Was the alleged “severe fine” by TNA appropriate? Or do you agree with me and think that it’s ridiculous that an actor is being punished for playing his part? Do you think this is all an elaborate angle that will help TNA, Aries, and Hemme get some mainstream press? Am I part of the angle? Shout it out in the comments section (please), but don’t put your crotch in my face or I will fine you.

Yahoo! Bolsters Streaming Content With SNL, WWE

Yahoo! has announced a ton of streaming video initiatives, including six original shows. Direct-to-streaming programs seem like “the next big thing” with Amazon and Netflix paving the way for TV-less television. For fans of traditional shows, Yahoo! also announced partnerships with Saturday Night Live and WWE. The company will be the “exclusive home” of SNL archives. As for WWE programming, here’s some of what you’ll be able to enjoy starting this summer:

  • Monday Night Raw pre-show: A 30-minute pre-show to each new Monday Night Raw will be exclusive to Yahoo!.
  • Original programming: Two weekly series of 50 episodes per year will be produced exclusively for distribution on Yahoo!.
  • Premium archive: Yahoo! will have exclusive access to WWE archives of historical full matches, shows, highlights and other events.
  • Additional live events: Yahoo! will air live, pre-show content for every pay-per-view event.
  • Clips from current TV programming: Clips from all WWE television programs will now be available on Yahoo!.

All of this streaming goodness has me considering cutting the cord to cable (specifically, my crap-bag provider Time Warner Cable). I would certainly miss boxing and pro-wrestling PPVs, but can find other ways to enjoy those shows. I love the shift to direct-to-streaming content. It shakes up the market and is a potential change agent. As for the WWE videos that will be on Yahoo!, I’m particularly psyched for the “premium archive” feature. The WWE has a ton of classic matches in its library, including videos from most of its competitors from wrestling’s “territory” days. There are so many ’80s and ’90s matches that I’d love to see!

How about you guys and dolls? What do you think of Yahoo!’s streaming-video efforts?

The Post-WrestleMania Raw Phenomenon

The Monday Night Raw after WrestleMania has always been a charged event. The audience has lots of hardcore wrestling fans from out of town and there’s a lot of residual energy from the biggest pro-wrestling event of the year. The last two post-WrestleMania Raws have been particularly noteworthy. In 2012, the crowd was absolutely nuts for Bryan Danielson, since many felt that he was shafted by only getting 18 seconds of WrestleMania wrestling time. This year, the smarks (smart marks) totally took over the show; they completely overshadowed the Sheamus vs. Randy Orton match with out-of-nowhere chants (Mike Chioda?!?), made Fandango’s theme song shockingly popular, and became a bigger part of the show than most of the in-ring action.

Some are calling the post-WrestleMania Raw “Smarkageddon,” while others are using the terms, “Monday Night Marks,” and (my personal favorite), “Smarks After Dark.” Whatever label you prefer, it’s a beautiful case of the inmates running the asylum. If you missed out on the shenanigans then check out the clips below.

It’s too bad the WWE didn’t post the entire Sheamus vs. Orton match. The crowd was so unruly that it caused Orton to forget a line and had both wrestlers distracted at various points in the match. It was one of the most remarkable things I’ve ever seen from a WWE crowd. I’m used to such behavior at smaller, smark-filled shows like those held by Ring of Honor, Dragon Gate, and Pro-Wrestling Guerilla, but I’ve never seen it happen with a crowd that big, sustained for the entire show.

Some dirt-sheet writers feel that the crowd response “sent a message” to WWE and will start a trend of the audience upstaging the talent. While I expect several chants of Fandango’s “ChaChaLaLa,” I sincerely doubt there will be another show with a crowd as boisterous as the last Smarkageddon…until next year’s Smarkageddon.

What did you make of this year’s post-WrestleMania Raw? Do you think there will be a crow like that again in the near future? Or do you not expect to see an audience like that until Smarkageddon 2014?

How To Make a Fandango Ringtone With iTunes

For smarks, the hottest thing in the WWE is Fandango’s theme song, “ChaChaLaLa.” There are several reasons why the song is over; it’s an intricate, interesting, and ironic issue (the three Is, get it?!?). I’m not going to get into it right now, but what I will get into is how to make your very own Fandango ringtone. The current version of iTunes makes it super-easy to create your very own “ChaChaLaLa” ringtone for your iPhone. Here’s the rundown. Continue reading “How To Make a Fandango Ringtone With iTunes”

Coffee Talk #576: Flaccid Finishers at WrestleMania

Did you ever notice that finishing maneuvers aren’t very good at finishing during WrestleMania? For most of the WWE year, finishers mean that the match is over. Every now and then during a WWE pay-per-view event, an opponent will dramatically kick out or power out of a single finisher. At WrestleMania — especially for the last five years and arguably for the last decade — finishers go flat. There have been matches where the victor has to bust out his finishing move three times or more in order to win. In the immortal words of Hurricane Helms…more

If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Stevie Wonder at the Academy of Country Music Awards, Carmelo Anthony (barely) edging out Kevin Durant for the NBA scoring lead, or the Yankees not sucking on Sunday, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

In the immortal words of Hurricane Helms, “What’s up with that?!?”

Looking at it from a mark’s perspective, it could be explained as WWE Superstars having an extra amount of energy and drive during the biggest show of the year. The wrestlers are amped to be at WrestleMania and display powers that they don’t have during the other 364 days of the year.

Smarts and smarks will argue that WWE writers and bookers have been relying on the create-drama-by-kicking-out-of-a-finisher gimmick way too much over the years. The Undertaker’s matches against Shawn Michaels, Triple H, and CM Punk have arguably been the worst offenders. Don’t get me wrong — they were definitely fantastic matches and his scrap with Punk was easily the best of this year’s show. However, I’ve been conditioned not to buy into the first two or three finishers used in ‘Taker’s WrestleMania matches and WrestleMania matches in general. In a ploy to create drama, the bookers and writers have made finishing moves (at least the first three or so) seem less dramatic.

Yeah, I know this is “sports entertainment” and I’m probably thinking about the issue too seriously, but that’s one of the fun parts about being a smark. Ha! What’s your take on flaccid finishers at WrestleMania? Do you have a mark theory on why they’re less effective or why WWE Superstars are impervious to them at the show? What’s your stance on the matter as a smart or a mark? Leave your answer in the comments section (please!).

WrestleMania 29 Predictions (Yours Wanted!)

It’s WrestleMania weekend! Sadly, I am not in the New York/New Jersey area attending the event and hanging out with friends, as I originally planned. However, that won’t stop me from enjoying the biggest pro-wrestling event of the year. Hopefully we’ll be chatting it up on the RPad.TV Google+ Messenger group as the show is happening. For now, let’s go through each match, sharing and comparing predictions. Here’s the lineup with some random thoughts on the matches and my predictions. Please share yours in the comments section!

Wade Barrett vs. The Miz: Here’s a match between two guys that went from ultra-hot to mostly forgettable. It wasn’t that long ago that The Miz was headlining PPVs and Barrett was part of the sizzling Nexus angle. The Miz is infinitely more marketable due to his reality TV background, but I’ve heard lots of stories about management being unhappy with his lack of in-ring improvement. Barrett has much more potential as a wrestler, but hasn’t shown the mic skills or media savvy that The Miz has.
Prediction: In what will probably be a forgettable match, I think I’ll go with Mike the Miz, simply because he has twice as many Twitter followers and I expect WWE to go with marketing over ability.

Tons of Funk and the Funkadactyls vs. The Rhodes Scholars and The Bella Twins: This is the jamming-as-many-people-into-the-ring-to-get-them-on-WrestleMania match. It’s a shame, because I think these guys deserve better. While a lot of smarks are tired of Brodus Clay’s act, I still dig it and am amazed by the mileage he’s gotten out of it. Damien Sandow should get an award for Most Improved WWE Superstar; does anyone else remember his inept run as Idol Stevens? If Sandow continues to progress, the jump from Idol Stevens to Damien Sandow could rival the jump from The Ringmaster to “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. As for Cody Rhodes, his daddy was one of my favorites growing up and I’ll always be rooting for him.
Prediction: If this match is second, then The Rhodes Scholars and Bella Twins win. If it’s moved to the opening match then the Funky Bunch will win, simply to warm up the crowd with some goofy dancing.

Chris Jericho vs. Fandango: Jericho’s current run has been curious. He’s had some wonderful matches, but his angles haven’t been all that memorable. As one of the Teflon guys in WWE (losses don’t stick to him), he can usually be counted on to do the job in order to elevate younger talent. However, Fandango has been making him look silly for the last few weeks and Y2J is due for some revenge. Also, the Fandango character is stupid and should be buried soon. Johnny Curtis is going nowhere with this character.
Prediction: Chris Jericho wins and hopefully moves onto some main event work before departing on the next Fozzy tour.

Ryback vs. Mark Henry: Speaking of Teflon guys, Henry has surprisingly attained that status. Before his last major injury, The World’s Strongest Man put together the best run of his career and cemented himself as monster. Ryback has been one of the hottest characters in the WWE for the last, despite his limited ability.
Prediction: It kind of bugs me that Ryback’s rise will continue, but the crowd loves him and the WWE writers are listening. Big man matches are often duds, so I don’t expect a great one here, but I do expect a hot crowd after the Ryback win.

Randy Orton, Sheamus, and The Big Show vs. The Shield: This is another throw-them-all-together match. The faces are established main event guys and a victory here does nothing for any of them. The Shield need the rub and hopefully one of its members has a breakout moment.
Prediction: The Big Show squabbles with his teammates, leading to a victory by The Shield.

Daniel Bryan and Kane vs. Dolph Ziggler and Big E Langston: This match irks me. In my mind, Team Hell No should have been finished months ago. Of course I’m saying this as a Bryan Danielson mark that believes The American Dragon should be competing for one of the major titles. Ziggler should also be competing for one of the majors and, objectively, is in the better position to do so. While Langston would benefit from winning the tag team straps, it would only slow Ziggler down.
Prediction: Team Hell No wins, tragically relegating Danielson to mid-card status for several more months.

Triple H vs. Brock Lesnar: This match has the potential to steal the show. Lesnar’s ability is ridiculous and Hunter always saves his best stuff for WrestleMania. The no-holds-barred and retirement angles add some sizzle to this rematch. As an HBK fan, I’m excited to see how he gets involved. The reality is that both guys are part-timers these days, but Hunter has lots of office duties at WWE HQ in Stamford.
Prediction: At this stage of his career, I expect Triple H to do the job in that selfishly unselfish way (Kobe Bryant TM). Lesnar looks like a beast and is available for all kinds of opportunities (part time, of course), while Hunter goes back to the office.

The Undertaker vs. CM Punk: Was anyone offended by Punk throwing Paul Bearer’s (angle) ashes on ‘Taker? It’s been a long time since WWE programming has shown anything that questionable. Whether you were offended or not, the move reeked of desperation. Few people think that Punk has a chance at beating the Dead Man (who isn’t actually dead, as Chris Jericho once pointed out), so it looks like the WWE writers have resorted to shock tactics to keep people interested in this match. It’s working for some people (those that want to see ‘Taker crucify Punk), while others see this as an automatic notch on The Undertaker’s WrestleMania streak.
Prediction: It would be awesome for Punk to be “the guy” that ended The Streak and his longtime fans believe he deserves it. It would put him over for the rest of his career. However, I think it would be a mistake to tarnish ‘Taker’s perfect WrestleMania record, especially if it’s because his character is so angry that he gets himself disqualified. I expect The Undertaker goes over with a clean win, but I would be pleasantly surprised by Punk getting put over in one of the biggest ways possible.

Alberto Del Rio vs. Jack Swagger: This is a pick ’em match for me. I really don’t enjoy Del Rio as a face; it seems forced and disingenuous to me (similar to face Randy Orton). In a perfect world, he loses the strap to Swagger so that he can go back to being an awesome heel. Swagger would then serve as a transitional champion that would make way for Ziggler, Danielson, etc. However, you don’t crown transitional champions at WrestleMania and I don’t think that Swagger’s current character is worthy of main events.
Prediction: Del Rio wins and moves onto…you know, I’m not really sure where he goes from here. Swagger loses and moves onto picking on other minority wrestlers.

The Rock vs. John Cena: In my head, this was the easiest match to pick on paper, but the toughest in terms of sending the crowd home happy. It just makes sense for The Rock to lose the belt and set up a rubber match at next year’s WrestleMania. The Rock will go back to making movies before another part-time run and Cena will serve as the full-time WWE Champion. The kicker is the whole “sending ’em home happy” thing. Under normal circumstances, half the crowd hates Cena. While the WrestleMania 29 audience will be much broader than the typical NY/NJ show, I still expect more than half the crowd to hate Cena. Can you really end the show with him winning?
Prediction: John Cena wins and at least 60 percent of the live audience will hate it.

Jim Ross Calls DeAndre Jordan Dunk

My excellent friend Brad tweeted this video yesterday and I can’t stop watching it. It’s that monstrous dunk by Los Angeles Clippers center DeAndre Jordan set to a classic Jim Ross WWE call. Watch DJ throw down a Chris Paul lob for one of the most ferocious dunks of the NBA season to the classic sounds of JR calling the action for the Mankind vs. Undertaker Hell in a Cell match from 1998.
