Captain America: The Winter Soldier Trailer

Waking up to the Captain America: The Winter Soldier trailer made this morning excellent. There are several things in the trailer that make my inner fanboy go gaga. Cap’s S.H.I.E.L.D. uniform looks pretty sweet and Falcon’s brief flying sequence is rad (though it’s weird to see Papa Doc from 8-Mile as a superhero). The coolest thing about the Captain America: The Winter Soldier trailer is…The Winter Soldier. He’s a complete bad-ass in the clip! I’m a big fan of the comic-book character and it makes me happy that the trailer shows Bucky Barnes in all of his kick-ass glory.

The only thing disappointing about the trailer is the lack of gratuitous butt shots of Scarlett Johansson. Though I suppose that’s what trailer two is for….

Anyway, check out the Captain America: The Winter Soldier trailer below and let me know what you think of it (please!).

Thor: The Dark World Clip (Loki Rules!)

Here’s a a sweet clip from Thor: The Dark World that shows two things. First, it shows how pissed off Thor has become. In the past, he’s always held back in his fights against Loki because a part of him still loved his adopted brother. Those days are over and the thunder god is no longer putting up with Loki’s trickster ways. Secondly, it cements the awesomeness that is Loki. Tom Hiddleston plays Loki marvelously. He’s evil and conniving, but extremely charming. He’s the kind of bad guy that you want to have a flagon of mead with…while secretly worrying that he’s just getting you drunk in order to sleep with your sister. He’s one of the most entertaining villains in the history of comic-book movies and the clip below shows why.

Aaron Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen as Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch

It looks like Kick-Ass and the “other” Olsen sister will be playing Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch in Avengers: Age of UltronLatino Review has posted confirmation that Aaron Johnson will be playing Quicksilver, while the sexy Elizabeth Olsen will be playing the Scarlet Witch. Many of you are familiar with Johnson for his solid work in the Kick-Ass movies, while a few of you are familiar with Olsen for not being Mary-Kate or Ashley.

It will be interesting to see how Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are portrayed. In the proper Marvel Universe, they have a rich and storied history. The pair have been heroes and villains several times over. The Scarlet Witch is most famous for decimating the world’s mutant population with a single wish. In the Ultimate Marvel Universe, the two have a racy history where they have an incestuous relationship. In both cases, their father is Magneto, a character that’s currently licensed to another company for movie purposes. While I understand the legalities of not having Magneto involved in the characterization of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch in Avengers: Age of Ultron, the fanboy in me will be irritated.

I’m curious to see how Johnson handles Quicksilver. The actor was lovable goof in Kick-Ass. Quicksilver, on the other hand, is a lovable prick. I haven’t seen Johnson in anything other than the Kick-Ass movies, so I have no idea if he can pull off that Pietro Maximoff (Quicksilver’s real name) arrogance.

As for Olsen, I’m totally being a male by saying that I’m less concerned with her portrayal of the Scarlet Witch and more concerned about seeing her in the character’s famous Medieval swimsuit. In my head, a scantily clad Scarlet Witch played by Elizabeth Olsen will have outstanding scenes with  the skin-tight leather wearing Black Widow played by Scarlett Johansson. It will look something like this.

Anyway, what do you think of Aaron John and Elizabeth Olsen as Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch?

Christian Bale’s Batman Audition With Amy Adams

Here are some bits of Christian Bale reading for the Batman role in Batman Begins. A lot of people are talking about the far-less-ridiculous-than-in-the-movies voice Christian Bale used in the auditions. That’s certainly an interesting topic for (nerd) discussion, but what really grabs me here is Amy Adams. (And yes, I would love for Amy Adams to actually grab me.) Adams read opposite Bale as a favor, but imagine what Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies would have been like with Adams onboard?

I’m a huge mark for Adams. I think she’s beautiful, talented, and absolutely delightful on film. Some would argue that Katie Holmes is physically more attractive and/or that Maggie Gyllenhaal has more range as an actress. (For the record, I can see the argument for the former, but vehemently disagree with the latter.) As the total package (not Lex Luger), Amy Adams trounces them both. She’s fantastic in dramas, comedies, musicals, etc. She’s just an utterly charming woman that would have given the Rachel Dawes character several additional layers. Ah, what could have been….

Now back to Christian Bale’s voice. While I agree that Batman and Bruce Wayne should have different voices, most fanboys would say that Bale took things too far. The voice he used in the auditions could have used a bit more gravel, rather than the 57 layers he added in the movies. It makes you wonder, who told him that voice was a good idea? Nobody stopped to say, “Dude. You sound like a dick.”? You mean to tell me that not a single person involved in pre-production or early production had a Kevin Conroy clip to play for him? In the immortal words of Chazz Michael Michaels, “It’s mind bottling.”

Check out the clip when you have a chance and let me know what you think in the comments section (please!). Do you agree that Amy Adams would have knocked it out of the park as Rachel Dawes? How much better is Christian Bale’s voice in the auditions than in the movies? Lastly, why is it so difficult to find saucy photos of Amy Adams on Internet?!?

Dark Knight Legacy: Nightwing and Red Hood Fan Film

Dark Knight Legacy is an Indiegogo fan film that takes place after The Dark Knight Rises. The trailer, embedded below, features several characters from the Batman comics and movies — Nightwing (TDKR’s John Blake), Red Hood (identity unknown), Stephanie Brown (Spoiler), Oswald Cobblebot (Penguin), and Lynx (from the Robin comics). For a fan film, the trailer is pretty good. I was especially impressed by the costumes.

Dark Knight Legacy’s goal is $30,000 with a stretch goal of $90,000. Rewards include a digital download of the movie ($15), your face drawn in the style of one of the characters on a comic-book cover ($150), and a Red Hood replica mask ($5,000).

Here’s an excerpt from the Indiegogo pitch:

Dark Knight Legacy follows “Robin” John Blake’s heroic journey to protect the symbol of Batman from the lethal, relentless attacks of a masked vigilante known only as the Red Hood.

A completely fan funded series, Dark Knight Legacy is a series by fans for fans. Every penny will be put towards creating an epic masterpiece that explores the world left behind in The Dark Knight Rises.

While I enjoyed the trailer, I’m split about Dark Knight Legacy. Nightwing is my favorite comic-book character and Red Hood is up there too. As a fanboy, I hate seeing “‘Robin’ John Blake” as Nightwing. Nightwing is Dick Grayson (the first Robin) to me and always will be. Since Christopher Nolan’s movies didn’t have any Robins, I’m curious to see how the writers of Dark Knight Legacy will handle Red Hood. While the character started as one of the Joker’s aliases, in recent years Red Hood has been (awesomely) redefined by Jason Todd (the second Robin). And yes, I realize these issues are very fanboy specific.

All that said, I’d like to see Dark Knight Legacy get funded. The trailer is a great tease and shows potential. I also hope the producers see fit to have a flashback sequence featuring Bane’s nutritional advice and rapping.

Kindly check out the trailer below and let me know what you think of Dark Knight Legacy.

Justin Timberlake as the Riddler???

Superstar Justin Timberlake has revealed his desire to play the Riddler in the upcoming Batman movie. Following the news that Ben Affleck will be playing the Dark Knight, the next Batman film has been getting a ton of buzz. Here’s what Timberlake had to say in a recent radio interview on the Jim & Kim Morning Show (via People)

I ain’t playin’ Robin. I have no aspiration to ever be a superhero in a movie. Now, villain! I’ll tell you the villain I want to play more than anything because I grew up loving Batman, funny enough, is the Riddler.

The Riddler was like a sociopath. He was proper crazy. So if I’m gonna play crazy, I wanna play proper crazy… I’m ready. The Riddler. Give me a call!

I actually like this idea. Timberlake has a smugness that would work well for the Riddler. The villain, after all, thinks he’s smarter than everyone else in the world. The casting would work for Timberlake’s detractors as well; the Riddler is supposed to be annoying and many Timberlake haters find him to be an annoying actor. After Jim Carrey’s portrayal of the Riddler in the terrible Batman Forever, the bar is set pretty low. Timberlake could become a nerd hero for restoring the Riddler’s intellectual greatness.

On the off chance that Timberlake plays the Riddler, what do you think of the casting? Could you see him pulling off the enigmatic Batman rogue? Or would you keep thinking, “Backstreet’s back baby!!!”? Leave a comment and let me know (please!).

Ben Affleck is Batman (Plus Poll)

Ben Affleck will be the next Batman. That’s right, the man that dazzled as the Fashionable Male employee in Mallrats, received critical acclaim for his writing in Good Will Hunting, fizzled in Gigli, fizzled some more in Jersey Girl, pulled a career 180 with The Town, and cemented his turnaround with Argo will be donning the Batman tights in 2015. Here’s a quote on the casting from Warner Bros. president Greg Silverman (via Variety):

We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics’ most enduringly popular Super Heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some.

Affleck is no stranger to superhero movies, having starred in Daredevil. However, that movie doesn’t help his case. While Daredevil had several solid performances, Affleck’s wasn’t one of them. There where many scenes where I couldn’t tell if he was acting like a blind man or acting like a mentally-handicapped man. Charming performances by Colin Farrell and Michael Clarke Duncan, as well as Jennifer Garner’s sai-wielding hotness, couldn’t compensate for Affleck’s wretched performance as the titular hero.

I’m still not sure how I feel about this. Initially, I was stunned by the news. Several moments later, I still don’t know what to make of it. While I’ve enjoyed Affleck’s work in Kevin Smith’s movies and admire his recent films, I still think of him as a hunky doofus. Like most comic-book fans, “hunky doofus” isn’t what comes to mind when I think Batman. I have no doubt that Affleck could ace the role of Bruce Wayne, but I fear his Batman moments will result in numerous scenes that are unintentionally funny.

What do you think of Ben Affleck playing Batman? Kindly vote in today’s poll and expand on your choice in the comments section.

What If…Thor Played Hulk Hogan?!?

A Hulk Hogan biopic is inevitable, but who in the world would be able to portray him on the silver screen? What actor has the combination of muscles, mass, and charisma to play the man that changed pro-wrestling forever and for better? If Hulk Hogan had his way, it would be Chris Hemsworth training, saying his prayers, and eating his vitamins in a Hulk Hogan movie. In an interview with the Canadian Press, the Hulkster said:

I think we need a serious, serious actor that knows what he’s doing. You know who I thought would be good? That guy that did that action movie, Thor (Chris Hemsworth).

I love it! Hemsworth has the charm and the physique to pull off Hulk Hogan. However, I wonder if he can mask his Australian accent while doing over-the-top promos in an American voice. I also wonder if comics fans that are wrestling marks will be able to block out memories of Hemsworth’s role as Thor while seeing him play Hulk Hogan. It would certainly be difficult for me. In my head, I see a mashup going something like this:

Wucha going to do, brother?!? When the largest arms in Asgard run wild on you?!?

And also:

Well you know mean Loki, Mjolnir is the mightiest hammer in the world, brother! And there’s no way Andre the Frost Giant can wield it, brother!

So what do you think of the idea of Chris Hemsworth playing Hulk Hogan?

Random Thoughts on The Wolverine

After the terribly uneven X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Marvel’s most famous mutant needed a kick to the X-gene. For the most part, he gets that in The Wolverine. Based (very) loosely on Chris Claremont’s highly regarded 1982 Wolverine miniseries, this movie focuses on Logan’s activities in Japan — one of the most fascinating aspects of the character. The action is fantastic and the good guys turn in solid performance, but the movie is limited by its villains. Read on for some random thoughts on The Wolverine.

Huge Jackman: Hugh Jackman is back and he’s bigger than ever. Seriously. Dude is frickin’ ripped. At this point, it’s difficult to imagine anyone else playing Wolverine. Yes, a chunk of the portrayal involves large periods of brow furrowing and screaming (“Grrrrrrr!!!” “Arrrrghhh!!!” “Raawwwrrr!!!”), but for many people Jackman is Wolverine. He’s very good at playing this character and it’s fun watching him be “the best at what he does.” That said, I dream about Jackman mashing up his X-Men and Oklahoma experiences. Watching Wolverine sing “The Surrey With the Fringe on Top” would be awesome.

Amazing Action: Some of the fight scenes in the movie are just brilliant. The action sequence on top of a bullet train will take your breath away. The post-funeral chasing and fighting early in the movie is fantastic. Wolverine and company vs. ninjas is always a good time. The movie is at its best when Logan is slicing and dicing nameless minions. It’s awesome adamantium-laced fun.

Impressive Newcomers: Relatively inexperienced actors Tao Okamoto (Mariko Yashida) and Rila Fukushima (Yukio) are quite charming in the movie. It’s nice to see movie damsels that are more than distressed beauties. Both women play characters that are capable and powerful. It would have been nice if Fukushima had the opportunity to crank Yukio up to 11 (the script’s fault, not hers). Her version of Yukio is quirky and eccentric. To me, Yukio is reckless to the point where you question her sanity. Fukushima could have rocked a borderline insane Yukio, but did well with the cute, quirky, and fierce version.

Famke Flashbacks: The movie had several dream sequences featuring Jean Grey. They were mostly unnecessary, but I’m all for scenes with Famke Janssen in lingerie. She’s the tall Dutch cougar of my dreams.

Japanese People in Japan: 20 years ago, this movie would have been full of caucasian actors. I love that we’re at the point where a Hollywood movie set in Japan has a cast full of Japanese people.

Unnecessary Roughness: The movie has a lot of needless gymnastics — dynamic moves that are made for the sake of looking cool. There was this one moment that was so bad that it pulled me out of the movie and made me laugh. A ninja performed a midair cartwheel that took him from one side of a doorway to the other. After landing, he closed the door. WTF?!? He could have accomplished the same thing and expended less energy by, you know, walking.

Viper Sucks: My biggest problem with the movie was Viper. As a comic-book nerd, I hated the changes made to this character. Why give her mutant powers? Why is she peeling off her skin for no reason? Why does she have a mid-fight monologue that explains her capabilities? The bigger and more universal problem was that the actress was horrible. Svetlana Khodchenkova’s acting was so terrible that it was distracting. She made Olivia Munn look like Meryl Streep. Many of her scenes pulled me out of the movie and left me thinking, “Wow. You suck.”

On a completely immature note, I was also distracted by her beauty mark. I was hoping for a scene where Wolverine went all Austin Powers on her, poked her beauty mark with one of his claws, and shouted, “Moley moley moley moley!” That would have made Khodchenkova’s crappy acting worth enduring.

Anticlimax: So Viper sucked and secret character was kind of a dull villain. Both of them would have worked better as supporting villains. Instead, secret villain man bastardizes the Silver Samurai character and constructs a giant adamantium suit of samurai armor. It’s like he watched Thor, was inspired by the Destroyer, and thought, “Hey, I have this huge stockpile of adamantium. That Destroyer thing was cool. Know what else would be cool?” Since the villains weren’t very good, the movie’s climax wasn’t all the climactic. It’s hard to get excited about the big face-off against the baddies when the baddies are tepid.

Verdict: The Wolverine was lots of fun for the first 3/4 of the movie. The action scenes against nameless ninja minions were highly entertaining, Jackman is great at playing this character, and the leading ladies were fun (and beautiful). Unfortunately, the movie flattens out at the end because the villains were kind of lame. As a comic-book nerd, I firmly believe that the movie would have been better if it followed the original Claremont plot more closely. Most of the things that went wrong were a result of stupid script adaptations. I definitely enjoyed The Wolverine, but not nearly as much as Star Trek: Into Darkness, Iron Man 3, and Pacific Rim.

If you caught the movie, I’d love to hear your thoughts on it. Kindly share your healing-factor enhanced feelings on The Wolverine in the comments section.
