Coffee Talk #282: Looking Back at Your 2010 Most Wanted

It was fun learning about the 2011 games you’re psyched for. Just for kicks, I went back to Coffee Talk #59, #60, and #61 to check on your most wanted games of 2010. How did your picks work out for you?

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Owen Wilson becoming a father, the Carmelo Anthony deal-a-thon, or finishing the last remnants of a mediocre bag of beans from Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

It was fun learning about the 2011 games you’re psyched for. Just for kicks, I went back to Coffee Talk #59, #60, and #61 to check on your most wanted games of 2010. How did your picks work out for you? Were your expectations met or exceeded? Or did your choices disappoint you? Here are the three games I picked:

  1. 1) Heavy Rain — As a Quantic Dream fan, I was so psyched for this game. It was pretty much what I expected and I was very satisfied with the experience. The graphics, storytelling, and music were fantastic.
  2. 2) Final Fantasy XIII — Yeah, I still haven’t finished this game, but I really enjoyed what I played so far. Sure, there’s a lot of hand holding, but the graphics, music, and gameplay totally work for me. Plus, it has Reona Rewis.
  3. 3) SmackDown vs. Raw 2011 — While my other two picks were pretty much what I expected, this was the one game that surprised me. I knew the writing was going to be excellent, but I was shocked by its quality. If it doesn’t win all kinds of awards in 2011 then there’s no hope for the videogame industry.

Now it’s your turn!  I noticed a bunch of you picked BioShock 2. While it was a good game, I recall a bunch of you being let down. I also noticed that one of you was certain that Diablo III would be released in 2010. Oops…and I’m sorry. Now kindly peer into your retroscope and leave a comment. How did your 2010 most wanted list turn out?

  1. I wasn't part of the crew yet, but out of the four games I really wanted in 2010 (Split/Second, R.U.S.E, SCC, and UFC 2010) the only game I was really let down with was UFC.

  2. i guess i never put up a list back then…wow, what a douchebag

it would have been heavy rain, god of war and modern warfare 2

i was disappointed by GOW and MW2…but heavy rain was great, still need to play through it again

    1. modern warfare 2 may have been 2009….i guess black ops then…but shit that game has been buggy for us early 60 gig ps3 owners…funny thing though is that it might be the best game of the series

  3. It looks like a never put up a list too. The 3 games i was looking forward to was:

    3. God of War 3 – It didn't really impress me but it didn't disappoint either.

    2. FF13 – I like the story and the graphics. I still need to finish it.

    1. CoD Black Ops – The PS3 version has disappointed me with all of its glitches but the 360 one has met my expectations. I like the zombie mode that was added on but it hasn't given me a wow moment yet.

  4. Diablo3 this year! lol. But had it come out Ray……

While it didn't release last year I found a worthwhile substitute in Cataclysm.

I never played Bioshock2 after hearing a bunch of people I know steer me away from buying it. I finally got RDR for christmas and have only played about an hour of it. I'll probably pick it up again eventually. What I did in the first hour of riding around the ranch didn't make me want to rush back in and play.

    1. A lot of that is tutorial for later missions. Give it an honest try. It’s a great game.

  5. #3 was Bad Company 2 – It should have been my #1. I have put in the most time with it, Bought the Vietnam pack and it is is a whole new game now. Love this series way more than CoD.

#2 was God of War 3 – Loved it, just not something I will play again soon. Played it through twice though (mostly because my console crapped out)

#1 was BioShock 2- I have yet to play more than about an hour of it yet. It wasn't horrible I guess but it just wasn't as immediately interesting as the first. It didn't feel new.

In with #3 I had mentioned a game called Mass Driver. Still looking forward to a game like that.

  6. I can't seem to find my entire list, I don't think it was in those three, it must have been in one of the first two articles (#58 and #57). Rage was #1 though, and that didn't happen at all. Now by the time it comes out we will see how excited I still am for it. I wasn't playing Pokemon again yet during those times, and those games always have a way of getting played the most. I'm sure Halo: Reach had to be on the list somewhere, and that lived up to its expectations I believe. About to do some reading for class and try to find the rest of my list.

  7. Well –

#3 Gears of War 3: I was guessing that it would come out last year because the timing seemed right. It's actually coming this year, so I guess that was a disappointment (sort of).

#2 God of War III: I thought it was excellent, and I'm sad to say I really haven't turned on my PS3 much since I beat it.

#1 Mass Effect 2: This was my most anticipated game of the year, and it turned out to be my game of the year. Although I also really liked AC: Brotherhood and Red Dead Redemption.

    1. @God3

I actually gave that game away yesterday to a coworker. It was too buggy. Maybe my PS3 was just crapping out.

      1. My sound kept messing up and repeating nonstop. Music and dialogue. Then the greatest bug of them all which made me free fall through the environment nonstop. It would lock up my PS3.

        I really think it's just my PS3.

    1. Why would anyone protest a 9-year-old's funeral… or any burial service for that matter?

      -M

      1. Because they're nuts. These people think they're doing God's work in some crazy way, but they've forgotten the Christ taught brotherhood & forgiveness, not hate. They are the American Taliban. I'd imagine that they'd have issues with someone showing up at the funeral of one of their loved ones to protest their beliefs, but apparently they've forgotten that whole "do unto others" bit from the bible…..

      2. Matthew 7:12 (just in case you needed the reference)

In this particular instance, you may want to read a little before that, specifically Matthew 7:1-5. I think you’ll like that one better.

      3. Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. I'm not religious so I don't have the passages memorized. But I know more or less the contents and context of the teachings of Jesus because I was raised a Catholic. I find many who use religion in a political context don't understand 3/4 of what they're talking about.

  8. We are going to get hit with 10"-15" of snow between tonight and tomorrow, I hope work gets canceled!

      1. oh you got me! i'm not really into Fergie, she looks kinda old in the face but she does have a nice body.

  9. How ironic! I was looking back at those older posts and I mentioned that I was most looking forward to Heavy Rain.

… I guess I'm still looking forward to it when I eventually get around to buying a PS3. On a side note; customized home theaters are expensive as hell. And with a baby on the way, it looks like daddy's toys are going to take a back seat to the kid's education fund. :(

      1. Don't worry, when the price of DR2 gets to around $20 new, I'll buy it and send you an invite for co-op. I'm thinking that it should only take two to four more months.

By the way, have you seen the Dead Rising 2 High Stakes Edition on capcom.com? It has something in there I think you'd like:

        http://shop.capcom.com/store/capcomus/en_US/pd/pr

The retarded thing is that if you look up this bad boy on eBay, it's being offered for anywhere between $110 and $210, yet if you go to capcom.com (to the Capcom store) it's available for $90. Sometimes, I just don't understand stupid people.

        -M

      2. Sorry. I am taking the Dead Rising 2 back tomorrow for a store credit. Played for 30 minutes: Skipped 5 cut-scenes, rode a motorcycle with wonky controls that no matter what direction you aim going up a wall you go straight back down, skipped 15 cut-scenes, ran down a hall, killed 80 zombies, skipped 10 cut-scenes, ran down a hall, skipped more cut-scenes, ran with a little girl kicking people, more cut-scenes, TURNED IT OFF. Every cut-scene turns into a loading screen into a cut-scene into a loading scene.

Couldn't take anymore. The killing fun either. Hit once to knock down….wait to get up….hit again for kill.

      3. @Slicky

Try Left 4 Dead if you want some good zombie killing fun. I know you said you don't play your 360 as much anymore, but if you still want a zombie game L4D and L4D2 are much better games I think.

      4. @ BSU

I have both of those and loved them for a little while. Better with more people. Especially people who know how to play games.

      5. @Slicky

I agree they are more fun with more people. It's been a while since I've really played them- but if you ever wanna play them again I'm sure you, me, Big Blak, and Tokz would be able to have some fun still sometime.

      6. Hey, did you know that the Left 4 Dead add-ons (along with other zombie-related stuff) is the XBL deal of the week?

        -M

      7. No I did not, but it might be a good time to pick up the last DLC that I need. I only need the newest one for the first L4D and then I will have them all. It is the same thing as the newest one on L4D2 though.

      8. @SG

Yeah pretty much if it doesn't start off getting my attention within half an hour it goes away.

      9. Damn I didn’t even think about that. I got it for PS3. I’ll see what I can do about exchanging it soon since I already opened it.

  10. @Ray

Any tips on breeding triple flawless pokemon? I used my single flawless dittos to breed a couple male and female aipom's in HP, Attack, and Speed with perfect IV's in each. I checked all of those with the stat checker and they cleared just fine. So then I breed some double flawless, one kind in HP and Attack; the other kind in Speed and Attack. I have been using the power items which pass down the respective IV's from the parents (these were bred from the single flawless aipom's and also using the power items- also verified with the stat checker in the battle frontier). Then my plan was to breed two of the double flawless aipom's- one of each kind mentioned above- and using the power items to guarantee passing down the HP and Speed IV's of 31. The stats went like this- X/31/X/X/X/31 Male with Bold nature; and 31/31/X/X/X/X Female with Hasty nature. The male holding the power anklet to pass down speed, and the female holding the power weight to pass down HP. Then with both parents having 31 IV's in attack anytime that the attack stat was chosen to be passed down from either of the parents it would be a guaranteed 31 IV, and then I would continue doing this until everything matched up with the right nature that I want (either Adamant or Jolly).

Now while I was only trying to breed the double flawless aipoms I ended up randomly getting three that were triple flawless- the first was Naughty nature in all three stats I was attempting for; the second was Adamant nature flawless in Attack Speed and Sp. Def.; and the third a Bold nature flawless in my three desired stats of HP Attack and Speed.

My biggest problem comes in trying to breed the triple flawless pokemon now. Whenever I attempt this (18 eggs hatched so far, Ive only been working on all of this today) each of the pokemon produced only have one flawless IV passed down- not the two that should be passed down. These switch between perfect HP stats and perfect Speed stats- but never two flawless in the same pokemon. Any idea as to why this is happening? I could understand all of this more I were at least getting my two flawless IV's passed down, as the chances of getting the right combination of attack IV being passed down and the proper nature being around 1 out of 100. But only get one of the desired IV's passed down each time is really throwing me off. I've tried looking up some more information about the breeding techniques to see if I really missed something somewhere along the lines- but I have not been able to find anything to suggest that. I would really appreciate any help or ideas that you have on the matter.
