Sprint Sells Out of the HTC Evo 4G

A testament to the rapid growth of Google Android as well as HTC’s booming popularity, Sprint has sold out of the HTC Evo 4G. The screen grab above is from Sprint’s web store and notes, “Sorry, this device is so hot we can’t keep it on our virtual shelves.” This is good news for the Android platform and great news for Sprint, which has been losing customers like crazy for several quarters.

The initial stock of Evo 4G phones has been estimated by various sources to be somewhere between 200,000 to 300,000. While this makes the Evo 4G Sprint’s most successful smartphone ever, the number will surely be trounced by the iPhone 4’s debut. Looking at it from a phone-to-phone basis makes it seem like the handsets aren’t even competing in the same league. However, when you look at it from Google’s and HTC’s perspectives, that’s two Android phones in a row that have sold out. I have no doubt that the iPhone 4 will outsell any single Android handset, but in terms of increasing its installed base, Google is doing well with products like the HTC Incredible for Verizon and the HTC Evo 4G for Sprint.

  1. Seems to me the Evo has a better feature set than the iPhone 4. I hope it continues to do well. I'd love to be on Sprint's network currently

  2. Screens aren't a huge deal to me. At least not a problem I have encountered yet. Everyone boasts how good the screen is on the iPhone yet my BB Bold has the same pixel count packed into a much smaller screen so when you start talking about screen size to definition people tend to just pick which ever they own as the best. Me I'd rather have a larger screen (hence my wanting the Dell Streak) over an HD screen. The screens on phone are so small I have a hard time actually noticing much difference in them unless someone start throwing around numbers.

Not if they're being objective. I love the screen size of the Evo 4G, but I wish it used modern technology like OLED.

I'd think so. The Pre just never did it for me. I think it was more the form factor and the weird keyboard that did it in for me. Honestly RIM doesn't have a device out that merits a $30 per month data charge and I won't even consider a phone that isn't a smartphone. So yeah…to me it is the only thing they have. Is this their first android device anyway?

  5. @smartguy The Pre is great software married to mediocre hardware. It was all backed by crap marketing too. This is Sprint's third Android phone. It has the HTC Hero, which was dated out of the gate, and the Samsung Moment, which isn't very good.

I won't doubt that. The only problem I'd have buying one still (If that was my best choice) would be the fact that the OS isn't as supported as Android and iOS.
