This Week’s Videogame Releases

While it’s not as big as last week — with Brutal Legend and Uncharted 2 leading the way — there are some significant titles shipping this Tuesday. The two biggest games on the list are Borderlands and WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 (which will likely go down in history as having the best writing in any videogame made by man). Here are this week’s PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, PlayStation Portable, and Nintendo DS releases…along with some brief commentary. I’ve taken out most of the garbage and kids games (unless I found them funny).

Are you picking up any of this week’s releases? If so, leave a comment and let me know which ones.

Smackdown vs Raw 2010 a

PlayStation 3
Bakugan
Borderlands — Super looking forward to this one. It looks stylish and smart, but I’m not sure how well it will sell. I’m hoping the best for Gearbox though.
FIFA Soccer 2010
Madagascar Kartz
WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 — The Mickie James storyline is one of the most heart-wrenching experience you’ll ever find in a videogame.

Smackdown vs Raw 2010 b

Xbox 360
Bakugan
Borderlands — I do worry about the game being sandwiched between Halo 3: ODST and Modern Warfare 2. That’s some stiff competition.
FIFA Soccer 2010
Lips #1 Hits — Karaoke rules and so does iNiS!
Madagascar Kartz
WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010
— The Shawn Michaels storyline is a thrilling, action-packed ride that will leave you speechless.

AstroBoy Wii

Nintendo Wii
Alien Monster Bowling League
AstroBoy: The Video Game — I’m really looking forward to the movie. I hope the game is fun too.
Bakugan
Charm Girls Club: Pajama Party — Brian Leahy’s most anticipated game of 2009.
Dance Dance Revolution: Hottest Part 2
Dragon Ball: Revenge of King Piccolo
FIFA Soccer 2010
Madagascar Kartz
Marvel Super Hero Squad — A lot of people are scared of this one, but I’m such a fanboy that I want to give it a shot.
Medieval Games
Mountain Sports
NBA 2K10
Secret Saturdays: Beasts of the 5th Sunday
Water Sports WiFi — Uhhhhhh. Is this a game for deviant Wii owners?
WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010

Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars PSP

PlayStation Portable
AstroBoy: The Video game
FIFA Soccer 2010
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars
Marvel Super Hero Squad

  1. I've got WWE coming to me via Gamefly. I've still got Wet to try. And I've got to pick up my preorder of FIFA tomorrow. And I can't stop playing Brutal Legend.

  2. other than borderlands, which has gotten a lot of hype for some reason I don't know why, I'll pass this week on buying. my next 2 are Dragon Age and Assassin's Creed 2. that should give me a bit of time to finish up ODST and Uncharted 2

  3. Am I the only one who gets the Water Sports joke? I usually am the only person the room who snickers at stuff like that. It's like aligning yourself politically with people who willingly call themselves teabaggers.

  4. @Nightshade386 Let me know what you think of the HBK and Mickie storylines.

@N8R Thank you! I was thinking, "No one gets me," until you acknowledged the joke.

  5. @N8R – I always preferred golden shower. I used to know a guy who was in to that sort of thing. worse yet, I used to know that guy's girlfriend. Sometimes I would sit and look at her in wonder and disappointed amazement… haha she never knew I knew

  6. @shockwave562 "Raindrops keep fallin' on my head/But that doesn't mean my eyes will soon be turnin' red/Cryin's not for me/'Cause I'm never gonna stop the rain by complainin'/Because I'm free/Nothin's worryin' me"

  7. @ Shockwave

Dude, I know a guy that has the entire second floor of his house full of porn.

He's currently writing a book about the old 35mm theater porn. It's like a filmography for old school porn.

    @ R Pad

I get the "no one gets me" feeling all the time.

  8. @bsukenya Maybe I should slip in "mistakes" in future editions just to see if people are paying attention. Ha! Next week I'll put in Halo ODST: Ballerina Edition.

  9. @bsukenyan – That was great

@N8R – for every weird person out there there's a guy 10 times weirder

  10. @rpad well now i will just have to be on edge to make sure i can catch anything else. Ballerina edition hmm, could be a new direction for the Halo franchise. the new target demographic could be girls ages 3-15. sell even more 360s than ever before!! haha

  11. @shockwave i read your post and that song just popped into my head. couldn't resist posting the lyrics.

  12. @ Shockwave

I use that analogy to describe musicians all the time. No matter how good someone is, there's that one person on a mountain somewhere that doesn't care about fame or fortune, the just do it for the love.

  13. @Raymond Padilla

I believe you but I can't shake the feeling that the last couple of SVR games that I bought were the same games.

  14. @RRODisHere This year's is pretty cool. Create-a-finisher is pretty fun. And the Mickie James storyline is outstanding. *snicker*

@Smartguy You think it'll do that well? I don't know how many people are interested in a DJ game with an expensive peripheral.

  15. It's an interesting release for sure. You have DJ Hero releasing next week and then Band Hero a week or two afterward. Not sure if one or other will cannibalize sales really. I do know that Band Hero will not sell nearly as good as previous Guitar Hero games since they have abandoned the name Guitar Hero. That name carried with it tremendous recognition to unwitting parents. Maybe DJ Hero will do good because it is a new peripheral. Interesting to see how it goes.

  16. meh I'm so tired of music games. that genre is being run in to the ground these days. pretty soon there will be a Recorder Hero or Violin Hero…

  17. I guess Borderlands confuses me. it seems to be getting really good reviews. to be honest when I first saw this game and up until about a week ago I thought it was multiplayer only, like Team Fortress or something. I still believe the multiplayer is probably the best aspect so this may go to my back log for "buy it when it's cheaper" anyone else? I'm not a big MP online guy. Co-op seems interesting though

  18. some games I do. like flashpoint or whatever it was, pass on MW2 for me too. Shooters are a dime a dozen these days. . I really look for games with a solid story and good mechanics. This is why I'm skeptical about Borderlands.

  19. Going to go pick up my Pre order of FIFA 10 tomorrow after class. Just curious, but this is a question to all Gamefly users, does Gamefly still take a long time to ship games out? I did enjoy their netflix type service that they offered and that you could also purchase the games if you liked, but the time that it would take for them to ship games out was horrendous so I canceled. If by any chance they have fixed this I may have to return.

  20. @rpad I understand if you like the Yankees they're a good team( I'm a dodgers fan myself), but Man City :/

  21. @Insomniacswaltz There are a few reasons I dig Manchester City

    1) In general, I like underdogs. They'll always be #2 to Man U.

    2) They're good enough to stay in the Premiere League, but not good enough to win it. No one can accuse me of jumping on their bandwagon.

    3) They were briefly owned by the ousted Thai Prime Minister, Thaksin. The man loved by the poor in Thailand.

    4) I'm also a Ricky Hatton fan and he supports City.

    5) The kits look good on me.

  22. @R-Pad: yeah, it's getting a little out of hand with the foreign oil billionaires buying up all the Premier League teams. First Chelsea, now Man City.

  23. @ R Pad

Yeah well, he has yet to take on the Nation of Domin-asians. (best and worst joke I could think of)

He was much better in the Acolytes anyway.

  24. @N8R I liked the article until the last paragraph — yeah, sue your way into leading roles…that'll fix everything. But yes, there aren't many Asian-Americans in entertainment and the roles are slim pickings. Randomly, I'm reminded of Friends, which I enjoyed, but found greatly amusing growing up in NY. I've never seen such a homogeneous group hanging out in the West Village.

  25. @ Nightshade

    Different hats.

Think about it, throughout the history of the world, the funnier the hat, the higher the rank.

Kings, the Pope, Napoleon, fast food restaurants, etc. All funny (yet different) hats.

  26. @Nightshade386, @N8R There's a huge difference! I'd be pretty comfortable being sarcastic to an oil tycoon. A Russian crime boss?!? No way. I'd be on my best behavior. I probably wouldn't even speak unless spoken too.

  27. I suppose it depends what country the oil tycoon is from. US oil tycoon = probably just a rich asshole. Overseas oil tycoon = probably tied to the Russian mob or Islamic terrorism.
