This Week’s Videogame Releases

There are lots of great games hitting shelves this week! In the immortal words of Michael Buffer (or Triple H), “Are you ready?!?” Enslaved has been getting great buzz from the enthusiast press. I really liked this game at E3 2010 and can’t wait to jump into it. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow just might be the first great modern Castlevania game. Although I hate the use of Michael Jordan as a cover athlete (go Pistons!), NBA 2K11 looks pretty hot. I’m not going to play it, but I sure as hell want to watch other people give Def Jam Rapstar a go. Last, but not least, is Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light, which is one of my personal favorites of 2010.

Any of you picking up new games this week?

Sony Adds to PlayStation 3 Greatest Hits $29.99 Library

Sony Computer Entertainment America has announced several additions to its “Greatest Hits” library for PlayStation 3. The following titles will be available in a Greatest Hits box for an MSRP of $29.99:

I’m thrilled that Demon’s Souls is on the list. It gives me warm fuzzies to see an obscure game from a small publisher do well. Go Atlus!

Also, a lot of these games cost less than $29.99 on Amazon. I’m just sayin’.

Any of you going to pick up the latest entries into the venerable Greatest Hits lineup?

NBA Elite 11 Delayed, NBA Jam Standalone Coming in 2010

That bad news is that NBA Elite 11 has been delayed. The good news is that NBA Jam for PS3 and Xbox 360 will be available as standalone products. EA Sports president Peter Moore recently blogged:

NBA Jam will launch on the Wii, as scheduled, on October 5. NBA Jam won recognition this summer as the best sports game at E3 and it’s a blast to play. In addition to the Wii version, we’re going to ship NBA Jam as a standalone product on the Xbox360 and PS3 in time for the holidays. Watch for more news soon on the exact timing of that release.

A lot of my friends are thrilled by this development. They love the arcade-sports style of NBA Jam and don’t give a crap about sports simulation games. I think this is great news too; originally I was going to settle on the Wii version — here’s my NBA Jam E3 2010 preview for Shacknews — but getting the PS3 or Xbox 360 version would be lots of fun to play with you guys online (I hope it supports online play!).

What do you think of the NBA Elite delay and NBA Jam being untethered?

This Week’s Videogame Releases

There are lots of great games shipping this week, spanning a variety of genres. Fans of the beautiful game will be able to enjoy FIFA 11 on every platform known to man. If you’d rather kill zombies than play (international) football then there’s Dead Rising 2. Gamers that haven’t had their fill of Guitar Hero will want to check out Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock. Nothing calling out to you yet? How about giant robots?!? Get some mech action going with Front Mission Evolved. Last, but not least, is an RPG for PS3 gamers: Atelier Rorona…or as I call it Atelier Reona Rewis.

Any of you picking up new games this week? Kindly let me know what’s on your wish list!

Mega Man Universe Trailer

Capcom might have something really cool and really unique with Mega Man Universe. Headed for PlayStation Network and Xbox Live, the game blends the gameplay of Mega Man 2 with a level creator. Millions of gamers are familiar with the gameplay mechanics of Mega Man, so creating levels should be fairly intuitive. If the tools are tight then I expect to see some amazing fan-made designs.

Check out the trailer above and let me know what you think (please)! Any of you down to create Mega Man Universe levels?

Counterfeit PlayStation 3 Controllers Might Blow Up in Your Face

Sony Computer Entertainment has issued a consumer alert warning gamers about counterfeit PlayStation 3 Wireless Controllers. The company claims that counterfeit controllers could “ignite” or “explode”. Here’s a clip from the alert:

Counterfeit PlayStation 3 Wireless Controllers, which are practically identical in appearance to genuine PlayStation 3 Wireless Controllers, have been discovered in the market. SCEA advises consumers to be cautious when buying PlayStation 3 Wireless Controllers from uncertain sources as the quality, reliability and safety of counterfeit products is uncertain, and in some cases, may be dangerous. It is possible that some counterfeit product may ignite or explode, resulting in injury or damage to the user, your PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system, or other property. Moreover, SCEA does not support continued functionality of counterfeit or unlicensed controllers in system software updates and these devices may cease to function in the future because of system software updates.

What’s probably going to happen is that a PS3 controller will explode on someone’s face, scarring half of it. The person will be traumatized by the experience and embark on a life of crime. In a twist, the victim will be caught up in what’s “fair”, deciding his or her actions by flipping a half-burned PS3 controller. That’s my theory anyway….

PS3 Firmware 3.50 Available, Adds 3D Blu-ray Support

Hopefully some of you catch this before you head to work or school so that you can start downloading PlayStation 3 firmware version 3.50. I’m sure there are tons of 3D Blu-ray movies you’re dying to watch when you get back home. *snicker* Here are some other additions, courtesy of PlayStation Blog:

Facebook Integration: Developers will be able to create PS3 games that have more interaction with Facebook. Once compatible PS3 titles are available, PS3 users can choose to access public information on Facebook — including user name, profile, uploaded photos and friends list — to enhance their gameplay experience.

Grief Reporting Function: Users can send claim reports directly from the XMB for any inappropriate messages they receive from other PlayStation Network users. This feature is accessible from the option menu of the messages list in the FRIENDS category.

Developers accessing Facebook information via games could be very cool…and very scary. My big fear is that Activision CEO Bobby Kotick will get all my info through one of his upcoming Bungie games, somehow allowing him to buy me. Hmmm…Bobby Kotick is Emperor Palpatine and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is Darth Vader?!? Nah. That works too well. That can’t possibly be true.

Now please excuse me. I feel someone choking me through the Force.
