Get Psyched for thatgamecompany’s Journey

Here are some screenshots and a video of thatgamecompany’s upcoming PlayStation 3 title, Journey. As some of you will recall, I was incredibly bummed that I didn’t get the opportunity to see it at E3 2010. Like Flower, the game looks incredibly stylish and elicits emotion in a unique way. While Flower left gamers with a sense of joy, Journey has a desolate feel. Also, between this game and Uncharted 3, my PlayStation 3 will become a virtual sandbox in 2011 ( the year of sand?).

Anyway, check out the goodies and let me know what you think (please)! I’m so, So, SO psyched for this game and hope that some of you are too.

Will Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception Make You Buy a 3DTV?

You go on an airplane to San Francisco and Sony unveils a teaser video for Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. Hmph. This will surely be one of the biggest games for the PlayStation 3, but I think it might be a game changer. I’ll get to that later. First, here are some details from Naughty Dog community strategist Arne Meyer:

Drake’s Deception features the return of famed fortune hunter Nathan Drake and follows him through a gripping, action-packed storyline that will take you all over the world. In his search for the fabled “Atlantis of the Sands,” Nathan Drake and longtime friend and mentor Victor Sullivan set off on a daring trek into the heart of the Arabian Desert. But when terrible secrets of this lost city are uncovered, their journey becomes a desperate bid for survival that will force Drake to confront his deepest fears.

Throughout Uncharted 3, you’ll be taken to spectacular new locations around the globe that will showcase all of the work we’ve taken on to take acclaimed physics, particle and visual effects to a new level.

What’s interesting is the initial reaction from many videogame journalists I know. A few of them have said that this is the game that might make them buy a 3D television. What do you think? Will Uncharted 3 help Sony push its 3D TV agenda? Or will it “just” be another awesome game from Naughty Dog?

X-Men Arcade Hitting XBLA in December, PSN in February

According to Eurogamer, X-Men Arcade will hit Xbox Live Arcade on December 15, 2010 and PlayStation Network in February 2011. X-Men Arcade is a port of the classic Konami coin-op arcade game. I pumped tons of quarters into it during college and am excited to play it online. Anyone interested in playing with me? It would be cool to get some four-player cooperative games going…but one of you has to agree to be Dazzler. *snicker*

Insomniac Creative Director Speaks on Resistance 3

Insomniac Games creative director Marcus Smith wrote a great (and spoiler filled!) Resistance 3 post on the PlayStation Blog. I know that a few of you are high on this game and probably anxious to see the new footage at the Spike TV Videogame Awards. Hopefully Smith’s post will tide you over. Here’s an excerpt:

First of all, the main protagonist in Resistance 3 is Joseph Capelli, the Sentinel who (HUGE RESISTANCE 2 SPOILERS HERE… if you haven’t played it yet, go buy a Greatest Hits copy now!) was forced to kill Nathan Hale at the end of R2. Capelli was dishonorably discharged, and four years later is living in hiding with his wife, Susan, and son, Jack, along with other survivors in the town of Haven, Oklahoma. He’s given up fighting, and is now just trying to hide and survive the Chimeran death squads that roam the planet. But when Dr. Malikov arrives with an opportunity to deliver a blow to the Chimera, Capelli embarks on a road trip to New York City. Resistance 3 is a tale of Capelli’s heroic journey across the country as he encounters the remnants of humanity left in the aftermath of the brutal invasion.

After reading more about R3’s story, I’m more interested in the game. The plot seems more interesting this time around. What do you ladies and gents think?

NeoGeo Classics Coming to PS3 and PSP on December 21

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the NeoGeo console (and to cash in on nostalgia) SNK Playmore will be releasing classic NeoGeo games for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable starting December 21, 2010. There are plenty of old favorites set for release on “NeoGeo Station” over the next few months. Here are the details:

Here is the complete launch title list for NeoGeo Station — each PS3 version will sell for a suggested price of $8.99 per title, each PSP version will cost $6.99 per title. All titles listed will be available for the PS3 on December 21, 2010 and except where noted, in January for the PSP:

  • Fatal Fury (PSP 12/21)
  • Alpha Mission II
  • The King of Fighters ’94
  • Samurai Showdown
  • Baseball Stars Professional
  • Magician Lord
  • Metal Slug (PSP 12/21)
  • League Bowling
  • Super Sidekicks
  • Art of Fighting

Anything on the list excite you? Did any of you have NeoGeo consoles? At $650 in 1990, it was too expensive for me. If you were lucky enough to have one, what were some of your favorite NeoGeo games?

Lara Croft’s Origin Revealed in New Tomb Raider: Do You Care?

Tomb Raider’s Lara Croft will grace the cover of Game Informer’s January 2011 issue. The new Tomb Raider game will reveal the earliest tales of Miss Croft (the adventuring tales, not her discovery of womanhood). In a recent press release, Crystal Dynamics studio head Darrell Gallagher said:

Forget everything you knew about Tomb Raider, we are exploring things that have never been done before in this game. This is an origins story that creates Lara Croft and takes her on a character defining journey like no other.

Tomb Raider was one of the most influential franchises in modern gaming, but the series has hit several bumps on the road. I wanted to see if you still care about Tomb Raider and Lara Croft. Do you think younger gamers even know who she is? Are you interested in learning about her origins? Speak now or forever hold your piece peace!

This Week’s Videogame Releases

The holiday rush has slowed down, but there are still some big games left in 2010. I usually don’t include PC games in the mix, but World of Warcraft: Cataclysm is too huge to ignore. Tying into the movie, TRON: Evolution hits every platform known to man…and robot. Technically, this game comes out next week, but Super Mario All-Stars hits Sunday with all sorts of excellent bonus goodies.

Any of you guys and dolls picking up new games this week?

Sony Engineer Critiques Kinect for Xbox 360

Sony Computer Entertainment engineer Anton Mikhailov recently gave an interesting critique of Kinect for Xbox 360. Obviously he has a vested interest in PlayStation Move succeeding, but his critique was more interesting than the typical pissing contest between sales-and-marketing executives. He are some of the things he told Videogamer.com:

We feel like Move has more applicability across more genres so it fits better with what we try to do.

Also I think the tech is a bit, not so much immature, but not quite up to spec in what we think. Like the PlayStation Eye camera runs at 60 frames per second so it can track you very quickly whereas the Kinect and other depth camera are only 30 frames per second. So they are more suited for slower motions. Dancing is still kind of okay and then the yoga stuff that they were doing, it fits that very well, whereas if you want to do quick punches it’s harder to do that just because you can’t see the player as quickly.

The fact that it runs at 30 frames per second instead of 60, that’s a common problem with all those cameras. It’s actually hard to fix because you have a lot of data to transport. Sort of working with that image is expensive computationally-wise. I think they quoted something like 10-15 per cent of the Xbox resources, plus like 50 megs of memory or something like that. The Move takes less than 1%, and like 1 megabyte. So, you know, that’s just a bunch of numbers but to developers that means like Killzone 3 can just put in Move and not have to worry about it, whereas something like Kinect you have to make significant game changes to actually fit that into your game.

Whether you believe him or not, superior technology doesn’t necessarily win console wars. Look at the Nintendo Wii, for example. Furthermore, from what I’ve gathered, Microsoft’s marketing budget for Kinect makes Sony’s Move budget look like lunch money. People will buy into hype and purchase products that seem different.

What do you think of Mikhailov’s views on Kinect? Are they honest and legitimate? Or is he just touting his product’s technological superiority over one that’s outselling his?

Kindly check out these screens of Sega’s upcoming Binary Domain for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. This squad-based shooter is being headed up by Toshihiro Nagoshi, best known as the producer on the Yakuza and Super Monkey Ball Games. In a recent press release, Nagoshi described his vision for Binary Domain:

What I wanted to create this time was a dramatic and energetic sci-fi shooter. When you hear sci-fi you may think of cold, clinical environments but with Binary Domain I wanted to combine this with a deep human drama. The keyword we have in mind for this project is ’Life’. I wanted to make something that will be accepted by both the Japanese and Western markets, and this fundamental theme is something everyone knows but which the full extent of can be difficult to grasp.

It sounds cool on paper! What do y’all think of Binary Domain’s concept and screens?
