Coffee Talk #54: Your Favorite Holiday Gifts

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, the blood testing controversy delaying the Pacquiao/Mayweather fight, digesting your holiday feast(s), or your New Year’s Eve plans, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

And we’re back! Well, I’m back anyway. Hopefully a bunch of you around to keep me company this week. I’m still in New York for the holidays, but I’ll be updating the site all week. The bad news is that most of the videogame business is on holiday, so nothing too exciting should happen. The good news is that you ladies and gents that read this site and leave comments are always more interesting than the news the gaming business generates.

For now, I wanted to check on your holiday gifts. I hope everyone got some cool stuff! Whether it’s gaming related or not, I’d love to hear about some of your favorite gifts.

My brother made me two CDs of Journey MP3s without the vocals. The music is from a Journey tribute band he’s in and he’s pushing me to lay some vocals down. I’m definitely going to do it as some point, but I rather have my trusty Shure SM58 around when I do it. It’s a pretty cool gift that takes my karaoke habit to a new level. Ha! (And yes, the video above is from one of his other bands, not the Journey tribute band.)

While I practice “Stone in Love” and “Faithfully” all day, I’d love to read about some of your favorite presents this year. Leave ’em in the comments section (please)!

Play Guitar Hero 5 with “Weird” Al Yankovic

Weird Al Yankovic

As part of Microsoft’s Game with Fame series, Xbox Live members will have a chance to play Guitar Hero 5 with “Weird” Al Yankovic on Tuesday, December 15. His session takes place from 7PM to 9PM ET. To get in the game in Weird Al, send a friend request to “WeirdAl GwF” and be online 30 minutes before the session starts.

I usually ignore all the Game with Fame promos, but this one was too awesome to pass up. I am a huge Weird Al mark. I love parodies of all kinds and Yankovic has provided some of the best. Whether you’re talking about “Eat It”, “Amish Paradise”, or his brilliant polkas, I’m totally down with Weird Al.

Do you have a favorite “Weird” Al Yankovic song?

Coffee Talk #39: Gamer Girl Hot

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, whether the New Jersey Nets will go 0-for-December, Tiger Woods’ adventures in adultery, or whether Nokia can make Symbian competitive, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Erin AndrewsThere are certain things a woman can do that make her 20 to 30 percent more attractive than she already is. Female sportscasters are a great example of this. A cute female sportscaster will automatically be promoted to beautiful. A beautiful one elevated to goddess. (See ESPN’s Erin Andrews.) It’s called being “sportscaster hot”.

Female gamers benefit from this “gamer girl hot” phenomenon too. Is it shallow? Maybe…but I am of the opinion that elevating gamer girls is a good thing. On a practical level, it’s a common interest. For the sake of changing the image of what a gamer is, it’s fantastic to show that there are hardcore gamer women out there. In my mind, any woman that’s an avid gamer should be considered attractive because she has an awesome hobby.

Ginger Reyes

My big weakness is female bass players. I had a huge crush on D’arcy Wretzky for years — she was definitely a cutie, but playing bass made her sexy. Ginger Reyes is another beautiful woman that’s too-hot-to-walk-the-Earth because she plays bass. Paz Lenchantin is either my dream girl or too much woman for my brain to process — she plays bass and videogames!

Are there any sportscasters, gamers, bass players, actresses, or singers that you find more attractive because of what they do? Please list any gals or guys that pop in your head.

Square Enix Taps Leona Lewis for Final Fantasy XIII

In addition to working with Bon Jovi for Crystal Chronicles, Square Enix has enlisted the aid of Leona Lewis for Final Fantasy XIII. Today’s press release (as part of Final Fantasy Friday the 13th!) stated:

Multi-platinum, Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter Leona Lewis has come on board with Square Enix to provide the theme song for Final Fantasy XIII. The song is entitled “My Hands,” and is featured on her highly-anticipated second album ECHO (J Records/Syco Music) set for release on November 17th. Leona Lewis took the music world by storm with her 2008 6x platinum debut album Spirit which features her chart topping, biggest selling single of 2008 “Bleeding Love,” and mega-hit “Better In Time.”

Leona Lewis ECHO cover

I like “Better in Time”. It’s a cute and catchy song. More importantly, Leona is totally hot. I’m all for her promoting FFXIII.

What do you ladies and gents make of the news?

Play SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 with Adelitas Way

Adelitas Way

THQ has announced a promotion that brings together its videogame Smackdown vs. Raw 2010 (a finalist for the best writing in any videogame ever made by man) and recording artists Adelitas Way. The band will be playing the game on Xbox Live and you can play against them. THQ’s press release stated:

THQ Inc. today announced it will partner with EMI / Capitol Music Group recording artist Adelitas Way to offer consumers a unique opportunity to connect with the band using WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010, the latest addition to the popular fighting videogame franchise. On Tuesday, November 10 at 6:00 p.m. ET/3:00 p.m. PT, Adelitas Way band members will log in to the Xbox Live online entertainment network for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft to compete against fans using the Gamertag “ADELITAS WAY.” The consumer gameplay session is expected to last for approximately two hours.

To be completely honest, I’ve never heard of the band, but maybe some of you are fans. If you’re not, I encourage you to get online, play them, beat them, and tell them to stick to music. You should get all Chris Jericho when you win and proclaim that you’re the best in the world at what you do.
