Legendary and Warner Bros. Bringing Godzilla Back in 2012

Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. are teaming up to bring Godzilla back to the big screen in 2012. The companies aim to kick off a new Godzilla franchise that will hopefully take the world by storm. According to The Hollywood Reporter:

Everyone’s favorite gigantic, havoc-wreaking lizard, Godzilla, is on his way back to the big screen via Legendary Pictures, which has acquired the rights to develop and produce a new feature based on the iconic Toho Co. character. Warner Bros. will co-produce, co-finance and distribute through its deal with Legendary, and Toho will roll out the film in Japan.

I am absolutely thrilled by this development. When I was a kid, Godzilla, Reggie Jackson, and Muhammad Ali were my favorite people in the world. I was crushed to learn that one of them wasn’t real. Still, my Godzilla mark-dom has lasted for decades — despite that crappy movie starring Matthew Broderick. (That movie should be treated like Rocky V — it never happened.)

Anyone else psyched for Godzilla spewing his radioactive breath on the big screen in 2012?

Chris Evans (Human Torch) to Play Captain America

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Chris Evans has signed to play Captain America in the upcoming Captain America and Avengers movies. Moviegoers will remember Evans as the Human Torch in the Fantastic Four movies. Evans is will have to ditch the “Flame on!” catchphrase for the “Avengers assemble!” battle cry.

I’m not sold on Evans’ casting just yet. He’s 27, which is slightly too young to play the patriarch of the Marvel Universe. Yes, he has the Super Soldier Serum maintaining his youth, but Cap is a man out of time from World War II. Evans was great as the Human Torch, bringing out the character’s cockiness and recklessness. Can he play someone that’s supposed to be a little grizzled, naive to the modern world, a father figure to other Marvel heroes, and totally kick-ass? I’m not so sure.

This excellent YouTube video shows clips from the movie Se7en (Seven for normal people) done up Heavy Rain style. If you’ve played the game or the demo, you’ll absolutely get a kick out of it. It’s the best thing I’ve seen on the Internet this month I highly recommend watching it.

Coffee Talk #101: Giacchino’s Incredible Career Started in Games

Last night at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards, Michael Giacchino snagged an Oscar for best original score for Up, adding another accolade to his phenomenal career. While he’s gained fame for his work on Lost, The Incredibles, Ratataouille, and more, Giacchino got his start in games. From The Lost World: Jurassic park to numerous Medal of Honor titles to several Call of Duty games, he has composed some of the best soundtracks in gaming.

As someone that’s followed his career for more than a decade, I’m thrilled for Giacchino’s success. Every time he snags an award, he creates an opportunity for people to learn about the gaming world. His success brings attention, prestige, and legitimacy to the relatively young business of videogames. I know he’s busy with movies and television, but I hope he still has time to create music for the medium that helped get him to where he is today.

Out of curiosity, do you have a favorite Michael Giacchino soundtrack? I absolutely love the score for The Incredibles. Giacchino’s music is one of the reasons The Incredibles is high on my list of all-time favorite movies. Let me know some of your Giacchino favorites when you have a chance.

WWE Shad Gaspard in the Running for Conan Movie

WWE Superstar Shad Gaspard (the big guy in Cryme Tyme) is one of the finalists for the role of Ukafa in the upcoming Conan movie. According to WorstPreviews:

Gaspard has now updated his blog again, this time stating that he has passed the first part of casting and that the role is now down to him and only a few other actors. If he ends up getting hired he will star in the movie opposite Jason Momoa (“Stargate: Atlantis”), who has already been cast as Conan.

Gaspard is a huge man, but he’s also a huge nerd. When I met him at WWE SummerSlam 2009, he told me that he enjoyed comics as a kid, but the comic-book club wouldn’t let him join because he was a jock. He totally nerded out at San Diego Comic-Con 2009 too! On behalf of WWE fans and nerds around the world, I hope Shad gets the role.

Best Care Package Evar!!!

My friend Justin (RPadholic @jpkmets) sent me an awesome care package consisting of an Amazon Kindle, a Big Trouble in Little China t-shirt from The Wing Kong Exchange, and a Porkchop Express sticker. Everything in the box is pure awesome.

As many of you know, Big Trouble in Little China is one of my favorite movies of all time. I want to be more like Jack Burton. I reviewed a first-generation Kindle for a friend’s newspaper and loved it, but had to send it  back. I love the look and feel of the Kindle 2 and promptly downloaded Bill Simmons’ The Book of Basketball (i.e. the reason why I started late on the site today *snicker*).

Superman Reboot Being Supervised by Christopher Nolan?

The Superman movie franchise is headed for another reboot and rumor has it that Chris Nolan will be supervising Big Blue’s return to the silver screen. Deadline Hollywood has reported:

The studio has turned to Chris Nolan to mentor development of the movie. Our insiders say that the brains behind rebooted Batman has been asked to play a “godfather” role and ensure The Man Of Steel gets off the ground after a 3 1/2-year hiatus. Nolan’s leadership of the project can set it in the right direction with the critics and the fans, not to mention at the box office. Besides, Nolan is considered something of a god at Warner Bros and has a strong relationship with the studio after the success of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

I’ve enjoyed loads of Superman comics over the years and I loved the first two Superman movies starring Christopher Reeve. The problem with Superman is that it’s hard to make him interesting and vulnerable in a two-hour film. His weaknesses include kryptonite, magic, and bossy newspaper reporters. Kryptonite is too easy and has been done to death. Magic seems silly to most mainstream moviegoers (though Superman vs. Voldemort would be funny). Superman II worked because he faced off against three people with the same powers and General Zod was frickin’ awesome. How do you top that?

I’d love to see a Kingdom Come movie, but that would be too confusing for casual fans and it would be too expensive to make. What do you think the ingredients are to a good Superman movie?

Phoenix Sun’s Steve Nash Spoofs Avatar on Team Airplane

Not only is the Phoenix Sun’s Steve Nash one of the best NBA point guards of all time, he’s also skilled at the fine art of pop-culture parodies. In this movie, Nash spoofs Avatar during a flight on the team airplane. The short is called Bar’bo’sa, which pokes fun at the Na’vi race and Nash’s teammate Leandro Barbosa. It’s cute, goofy, and fun…and a lot more useful and creative than bringing a gun to the locker room.
