Coffee Talk #39: Gamer Girl Hot

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, whether the New Jersey Nets will go 0-for-December, Tiger Woods’ adventures in adultery, or whether Nokia can make Symbian competitive, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Erin AndrewsThere are certain things a woman can do that make her 20 to 30 percent more attractive than she already is. Female sportscasters are a great example of this. A cute female sportscaster will automatically be promoted to beautiful. A beautiful one elevated to goddess. (See ESPN’s Erin Andrews.) It’s called being “sportscaster hot”.

Female gamers benefit from this “gamer girl hot” phenomenon too. Is it shallow? Maybe…but I am of the opinion that elevating gamer girls is a good thing. On a practical level, it’s a common interest. For the sake of changing the image of what a gamer is, it’s fantastic to show that there are hardcore gamer women out there. In my mind, any woman that’s an avid gamer should be considered attractive because she has an awesome hobby.

Ginger Reyes

My big weakness is female bass players. I had a huge crush on D’arcy Wretzky for years — she was definitely a cutie, but playing bass made her sexy. Ginger Reyes is another beautiful woman that’s too-hot-to-walk-the-Earth because she plays bass. Paz Lenchantin is either my dream girl or too much woman for my brain to process — she plays bass and videogames!

Are there any sportscasters, gamers, bass players, actresses, or singers that you find more attractive because of what they do? Please list any gals or guys that pop in your head.

Square Enix Taps Leona Lewis for Final Fantasy XIII

In addition to working with Bon Jovi for Crystal Chronicles, Square Enix has enlisted the aid of Leona Lewis for Final Fantasy XIII. Today’s press release (as part of Final Fantasy Friday the 13th!) stated:

Multi-platinum, Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter Leona Lewis has come on board with Square Enix to provide the theme song for Final Fantasy XIII. The song is entitled “My Hands,” and is featured on her highly-anticipated second album ECHO (J Records/Syco Music) set for release on November 17th. Leona Lewis took the music world by storm with her 2008 6x platinum debut album Spirit which features her chart topping, biggest selling single of 2008 “Bleeding Love,” and mega-hit “Better In Time.”

Leona Lewis ECHO cover

I like “Better in Time”. It’s a cute and catchy song. More importantly, Leona is totally hot. I’m all for her promoting FFXIII.

What do you ladies and gents make of the news?

Play SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 with Adelitas Way

Adelitas Way

THQ has announced a promotion that brings together its videogame Smackdown vs. Raw 2010 (a finalist for the best writing in any videogame ever made by man) and recording artists Adelitas Way. The band will be playing the game on Xbox Live and you can play against them. THQ’s press release stated:

THQ Inc. today announced it will partner with EMI / Capitol Music Group recording artist Adelitas Way to offer consumers a unique opportunity to connect with the band using WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010, the latest addition to the popular fighting videogame franchise. On Tuesday, November 10 at 6:00 p.m. ET/3:00 p.m. PT, Adelitas Way band members will log in to the Xbox Live online entertainment network for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft to compete against fans using the Gamertag “ADELITAS WAY.” The consumer gameplay session is expected to last for approximately two hours.

To be completely honest, I’ve never heard of the band, but maybe some of you are fans. If you’re not, I encourage you to get online, play them, beat them, and tell them to stick to music. You should get all Chris Jericho when you win and proclaim that you’re the best in the world at what you do.

Michael Jackson Remembered with a Grotesque Cell Phone

Michael Jackson phone

“The King of Pop” Michael Jackson will be honored in China with one of the most hideous cell phones I’ve ever seen in my life. Packaged with a DVD, this phone looks like a door handle from an ’80s Las Vegas casino. Shanzai noted:

While there is no word on pricing just yet, we can tell you that it comes packaged with a Jackson live performance DVD, supports the finest quality plastic diamonds money can buy and has more Jackson ringtones than any right-minded human should ever need. Oh and the whole package is very exclusive with a limited quantity in existence.

I’ve seen my fair share of ridiculous and ugly mobile phones, but this one takes the cake. Katherine Jackson should put a stop to its production at once.

This unique, apple-shaped USB drive is loaded with the re-mastered audio for The Bealtes’ 14 stereo titles, as well as all of the re-mastered CDs’ visual elements, including 13 mini-documentary films about the studio albums, replicated original UK art, rare photos and expanded liner notes. A specially designed Flash interface has been installed, and the 16GB USB’s audio and visual contents will be provided in FLAC 44.1 Khz 24 bit and MP3 320 Kbps formats, fully compatible with PC and Mac.

Beatles apple

On one hand, this is a really expensive item. On the other, it’s still the frickin’ Beatles! For those of you with three hands, keep in mind that this is a pretty cool collector’s item. I’m happy that both FLAC and MP3 versions are included.

Anyone going to bite the apple bullet and pick this baby up?

Final Fantasy Tactics Concert Hitting Japan on November 22

FFT concert

A lot of you know that Final Fantasy Tactics is my favorite game of all time. One of the reasons why I love the game so much is its excellent soundtrack. Apparently I’m not the only one that feels that way. A group of (mostly) volunteers is putting on an orchestral (plus saxophones?) concert of the FFT score. Original Sound Version noted:

Not only will there be a live concert featuring the music from Final Fantasy Tactics on November 22, 2009 in Japan, but arrangements of 61 songs will be performed in medley form, just ten songs short of the entire soundtrack.

This group of performers put the word out over a year ago, calling for players, conductors, and production staff to volunteer their time with the intent of tailoring their arrangements to whatever ensemble they could get together.

Man, I’d love to be in Japan to catch this…. I’m completely impressed that this event is happening. It’s a testament to how passionate Japanese gamers are about their hobby. I mean, I was already impressed by the intricate costumes of Japanese videogame cosplayers (they make Americans look like a joke), but this is taking it to another level.

Anyone want to put on an FFT concert with me? I’m pretty awesome with a triangle.

Foo Fighters Concert Streaming on Facebook Tonight

In an interesting (and geeky) promotional event, Facebook will be hosting a streaming Foo Fighters concert tonight at 7PM PST. The event will be broadcast using Livestream’s technology and is being held to promote the band’s upcoming Greatest Hits album.

Whether you’re a fan of the band or not, you have to admit that this is pretty awesome. It’s crazy how far technology has come in such a short time. When Foo Fighter’s frontman Dave Grohl was playing drums in Nirvana, I’m pretty sure he didn’t envision reaching millions of fans through a streaming concert hosted by a social networking site…but that’s just conjecture.
