American Idol Finale: Jessica Sanchez vs. Phillip Phillips

The finale for American Idol season 11 is set! In the blue corner is Phillip Phillips. Continuing the WGWG (white guy with guitar) phenomenon, Phillips is popular with the millions of teenaged girls and old housewives that watch AI. In the red corner is Jessica Sanchez. Genetically engineered to compete in talent contests, the artist also known as BB Chez has incredible talent and is backed by an ardent Filipino community. Who will win American Idol in 2012? Let’s break it down.

[poll id=”151″]

Talent vs. Popularity: Sanchez is clearly the more gifted singer. There’s no question about it. Her range and power are phenomenal for a 16-year old. On a technical level, Phillips is very limited…but there’s no denying his popularity with the ladies. Do you believe America will vote for talent? Or will the frau and teenyboppers flood the phone lines with votes for the guy they lust after?

Genuine vs. Fake: As limited as Phillips is, his style is established and he knows what kind of artist he wants to be. There were several instances of Phillips refusing to pander to voters, judges, mentors, Tommy Hilfiger, etc. He’s definitely the more “real” of the two. Sanchez, on the other hand, is clearly the product of an overzealous stage mom. Her entire home-schooled life was about preparing for stardom. Her style and song choices are all over the place, which indicates that she’s unsure of the artist she wants to be…which makes complete sense because she’s so young that she doesn’t even know what kind of person she wants to be. I hate when she sheepishly says, “Thank you so much.” It comes off as fake, as if she’s replying the way her mother instructed her to. On a side note, being so sheltered and manufactured means that Sanchez will either become an incredibly bizarre adult (see Michael Jackson) or have a series of spectacular breakdowns (see Britney Spears).

As Performers: Between lifting his leg like a urinating male dog, feeling himself up when he doesn’t use a guitar, and those strange, strange faces he makes Phillips is an unusual performer. Like his musical style, his performances are established. You know what you’re getting with P-Squared and it feels genuine. BB Chez is totally lost in uptempo numbers. Her attempts at stage dancing and owning the audience seem silly. She totally owns when performing power ballads, but raise the beats per minute and she looks like a little girl performing in a high school talent show.

X-Factors: While the ladies love Phillips, his singing faces are so weird that they turn some voters off. Is he constipated? Is he passing kidney stones on stage? (He actually does have kidney stones, fyi.) It’s just…funky looking (not in that George Clinton way, but in that dog feces way). People in the Philippines are actually mobilizing efforts to vote for Sanchez. Being half-Filipino means millions of Internet votes using fake IP addresses. Sometimes I love the passion of my father’s people. Sometimes it’s embarrassing. In this case, I’m not sure how to feel.

The Winner Will Be: On paper, Jessica Sanchez should win. This is a singing competition. She’s the better singer. That said, there are some people that are put off by her manufactured nature and (sadly) there are many people in the middle of America that won’t vote for a non-white contestant. Ultimately, it comes down to the power of the WGWG phenomenon vs crazy Filipino voters.

Many have argued that the last four American Idol winners — David Cook, Kris Allen, Lee DeWyze, and Scotty McCreery — were not the best singers or performers in the competition. Many believe they won because teenagers and housewives love white guys with guitars. I’m biased against BB Chez and I fear the frau, so I’m going to go with Phillip Phillips.

How about you? Please vote in the poll above and pick the winner of the American Idol season 11 finale!

Intel Video Superstars Expands to Include Game Trailers

Intel has expanded its Video Superstars contest to include videogame trailers and short films. Previously, the contest allowed creators of music videos to compete for prizes. Adding videogame trailers to the mix gives independent developers a chance to shine. Fans of music, movies, and games are encouraged to check out the smorgasbord of content and vote. From what I understand, there will be some special surprises for those that participate. Stay tuned for news on those incentives.

Voting begins on May 24, 2012. There will be separate “best of” categories, including Action/Adventure/Shooter, RPG/MMO/Strategy, Casual/Puzzle, and Sports. According to the press release:

Video Game Trailer submissions begin May 7, 2012 and run through June 29. The first phase of fan voting begins May 24, and runs through June 29. Following the initial submission period, 10 semifinalists from each sub-category will compete for the top five slots within the Game Trailer category. A panel of judges will review the top 5 category finalists and winners will be announced in late July.

Please check out Video Superstars when you have a chance and let me know what you think (please!)

Latest Sound Shapes Video is Deadmau5-tastic

Here’s a slick clip of the upcoming Sound Shapes for PlayStation Vita. I’ve been curious about the game since early last year and I was enamored with it at E3 2011. It’s unique, creative, and fun. Helping the game get some mainstream attention is renowned producer and DJ deadmau5. Sound Shapes will feature levels with deadmau5’s sounds, loops, and beats. No word on if players will be required to wear a giant mouse head while playing.

Anyway, check out the video and let me know what you think (please!).

Coffee Talk #471: Videogames Starring Musicians

Over the weekend, I played two iOS games starring legendary musicians: Frederic: Resurrection of Music HD and Jazz: Trump’s Journey. They feature Frederic Chopin and Louis Armstrong, respectively. Both were pleasant surprises that reminded of other great videogames featuring musicians. Some of you will recall that…

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Game of Thrones seasons two starting to get excellent, MLB’s classy celebration of Jackie Robinson, or Tim Tebow getting booed at Yankee Stadium, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Some of you will recall that I’m a total mark for Britney’s Dance Beat and Journey (the awesome arcade game, not the crap Atari 2600 game).

Those pleasant memories gave way to nightmares about musician games that weren’t so good. 50 Cent: Bulletproof (ironic name considering the man’s numerous bullet holes), Power Factory Featuring C + C Music Factory, Revolution X, and Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style are just some of the crap games I’ve played that star musicians. It seems like there are three flops like Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker for every chart-topper (figuratively speaking) like Britney’s Dance Beat.

Naturally, I started dreaming up my own musician videogames. A platformer starring the original members of Kiss would be cool. A bloody beat-’em-up (Super Smash Bros. style) featuring pop divas like Tiffany, Debbie Gibson, The Spice Girls, etc. sounds awesome. The ultimate would be an HD remake of Journey. That game was so ahead of its time! Music, platforming, shooting, and more in a 1983 arcade cabinet?!? Unheard of!

I’d love to hear more about your experiences with videogames starring musicians. What were some of your favorites? What were the ones you hated? What’s the videogame/musician combo of your dreams?

Final Fantasy VI Meets Pat Benatar

When last you heard from him, Justin Leeper (author of the book Still Man Fights) rapped about the Occupy movement. This time he’s gone in a totally different direction, melding Final Fantasy VI and Pat Benatar. Check out the song above and official description below:

I felt these two songs — “Love is a Battlefield” and “Decisive Battle” — would go well together, so I set out to mix them. I wrote some additional lyrics, got my wife to sing, and made a video using gameplay from one of my favorite games of all-time, Square’s Final Fantasy VI (FF III in the US on SNES).

The music is “Decisive Battle,” from the Final Fantasy VI soundtrack. Both It and the game’s likenesses are owned by Square Enix.

“Love is a Battlefield” was written by Mike Chapman and Holly Knight, and was made famous by Pat Benatar.

My wife Kate did the singing on this video. I did rap and additional lyrics.

As always, Justin is looking for feedback on his work. So please leave a comment here or on his YouTube page.

Line 6 Mobile Keys MIDI Keyboard Controllers for iPad

Here’s another CES 2012 video for you. This time Line 6 mobile products manager Chris Grigg talks about the company’s two MIDI keyboard controllers specifically designed for iPad: the Mobile Keys 25 and Mobile Keys 49. Companies like Line 6 and M-Audio have been brilliant at helping musicians and song writers exploit technology to bolster creativity. Fair play to those guys and gals.

Cello Wars (Star Wars Parody) Lightsaber Duel Rules!!!

This Star Wars musical parody by The Piano Guys is one of the best Internet videos I’ve seen in 2011. It’s funny, creative, and awesome all the same time. The music is great. The costumes are great. The comedy is fantastic. I completely love this video! If I wasn’t poor, I’d donate money to The Piano Guys just for making this highly entertaining video.

How about you? Check it out and let me know what you think (please!).

Coffee Talk #427: Beats by Dre is the New Bose — Overrated

I almost always see someone wearing Bose QuietComfort headphones when I fly. I almost always laugh at those people. Bose QuietComfort headphones are overpriced and overrated. You can get headphones — in-ear or cans — that cost the same or less…

Whether you’re talking about videogames, Verve’s Sumatra Lake Tawar, impatiently waiting for Verizon’s Galaxy Nexus, or your favorite Christmas cartoon, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

I almost always see someone wearing Bose QuietComfort headphones when I fly. I almost always laugh at those people. Bose QuietComfort headphones are overpriced and overrated. You can get headphones — in-ear or cans — that cost the same or less and sound way better. I’ll take a pair of Etymotic, Shure, Grado, or UltimateEars headphones over Bose any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

In the last year or so, I’ve been spotting a lot of Beats by Dre headphones on airplanes. They’re pretty much Bose for the hipster crowd. They’re overpriced, overrated, and feature exaggerated bass. People think they’re cool and good because of their sharp style, great marketing, and fantastic distribution. I’m not saying that Bose and Beats make bad products; they make good stuff, but you can get much better for your money.

Today I was wondering if there are any brands or products that make you scoff. Do you automatically think “lamer!” when you see someone with Bose QuietComforts? Does your hipster-douche sensor go off when you see someone with an iPad at a coffeehouse? I can’t wait to read your comments! Fire away (please)!!!
