Coffee Talk #105: Do You Want Products or People From GDC?

After GDC 2009, I got in trouble for complaining about the type of coverage provided by the site I worked for at the time. Almost everything was about product — previews written off of demos shown outside the show. I thought there should have been more of an emphasis on the GDC panels, game developers, and what it’s like to attend the show.

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, exotic dancers at videogame parties, one developer you’d love to have dinner with, or TiVo Premiere, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

The argument against me is that readers are most interested in games. I completely understand that point of view and it’s definitely the way to get the most traffic. Still, as someone that was supposed to be writing about GDC 2009, I wanted to emphasize the “big D” — developers. Publishers can give a game demo whenever, but the opportunity to attend amazing talks given by the top talent in game development is rare, as is the opportunity to give that kind of information to you.

As always, I want to know what you think. Do you like to read GDC stories about developers, trends in game creation, and the wonderful creators in the business? Or are you happy reading game previews that put the focus on products rather than people?

  1. Well, I do enjoy the games and learning about them, I would love to know more about the developers and some of the talks that happen. I am less interested in the general goings on at the show though. I could give a crap less about celebrities and the booth girls and such. I dont care about people in costume and that sort of thing at all. But if it is about games, I wanna know as much as possible,

  2. The people should come first. It's cool if publishers want to use GDC to get info out to the press, since you're already there, but that info can wait until after GDC to go public. These people work there asses off for us so that we can get these products. The least we could do is show some respect, when do of course, to them. Plus, they really are cool people. I mean, who doesn't want to know how these people think?

  3. I would have to say 40% games and 60% devs man. There are a butt load of sites and blogs about games and reviews so I could really care less about that. I love hearing about devs and their teams, kind of like the special features on a dvd (no blu-ray for me) because we would never get that kind of insight in the game making process.

  4. I'm interested in the business aspect mainly. Human interest stories are rather hit and mostly miss with me. I always enjoy hearing about the musings of someone like John Carmack.

I see previews everywhere. No need to flood the internet with them. I really enjoy the other perspective on the whole thing. I personally would like to live in a world where we treat devs with the same regard we do directors and screenwriters.

  6. Like you said, publishers can show games whenever. I do like to hear about developers simply because they really aren't emphasized too much. They are an integral part that does seem to be missing from the constant conversations about the video game industry that ocurr on a constant basis.

  7. I don’t know man, those pics of that new Pole Dancing game that Ray posted the other day were pretty interesting. I wonder what the cost of that accessory is? Out of curiosity Ray, was that for the new Playstation Move? Because if I could sell my wife on it as a fitness game……

(j/k, I know those were for True Crime )

  8. @nightshade
that’s a good one, you had me going for a bit and i was like hey! that wasn’t a game!

I would like to hear more about the developers. Isn’t that what the D in GDC is?

  9. hmm, depends guys, i love all sorts of info, be it interviews or hands on impressions. Just keep all the talk away from shovelware games and it will be gravy to me!
