Coffee Talk #356: Make Your Own Videogame TV Show!

While I respect and admire the videogame television programming produced by G4tv, Greedy Productions (Electric Playground), and Spike TV (GTTV), I’m still waiting for my videogame dream show…

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, T-Mobile HSPA+ 42 launching today, Oscar De La Hoya in rehab, or changing your name to Lord RaRa, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

While I respect and admire the videogame television programming produced by G4tv, Greedy Productions (Electric Playground), and Spike TV (GTTV), I’m still waiting for my videogame dream show. It’s a total rip-off of ESPN’s Around the Horn, but hosted by Adam Sessler and featuring a rotating panel of gaming journalists and one verbal entertainer. Adam would be the perfect host for the show and it’s not hard to find game writers that are full of opinions. It would be weekly since it doesn’t have as many stories to cover as a general sports show. The show would be relatively cheap to make too. I think it would be a blast for the price!

How about you? What’s your dream videogame television show like?

  1. I used to watch X-Play all the time….before DirecTV decided I didn't need to anymore. I've never been a fan of GameTrailers format.

      1. I miss the OLD G4 programming. Filter, Judgement Day, etc. I could do without 15 episodes of Cops 3very day.

    1. Same happened to me. I miss G4….yes even some Cops. I don't get G4 anymore. I did prefer it back with The Screen Savers and Call For Help though.

  2. Oh thats a great idea rpad! Trademark that before someone steals it. It would be great if they did reviews in the around the horn format also any big story in the industry. This can be done on monday or friday.

    1. Yeah, I'm thinking it would be a nice Friday show. In my head it's called T.W.I.G. — This Week in Gaming. That's also an homage to This Week in Baseball.

  3. Something the exact opposite of XPlay would be great. I've tried watching it, but could never tolerate Webb. Her humor was bad and she never seemed to review anything she cared for. She always made fun of something.

Sessler would be ok as a panel person in ATH style, but not the host. You just need a good moderator type which I don't think he is.

  4. Ray that is a smoking hot idea that I don't think I can top in the next few weeks lol.

Around the Horn is the best show on ESPN and PTI is a close second.

How about a show that smashes both ATH & PTI together, hosted by Sessler and Simon Cowell. There would be 3 gaming journalist (with one permanent seat for Rpad) and an opinionated gamer that get to toss verbal feces at each other on a point based system. If the regular gamer wins, he or she is invited back for the next taping (like Jeopardy) and they get a small prize for winning. Make it for one week and they win a gift package from the one of the Big 3 (-$ony, M+$, Nint=ndo). The journalist will get nothing but free publicity and gloating rights because you guys get all the free shit anyways!

I shall call it Gimme Achievements!

  5. Okay monsters, I'm off to Machinima to record some stuff. I'll check up on comments while I'm there. They changed offices, so there's a chance that I'll get lost.

  6. I was just thinking last night that there really needs to be more video game shows that do a better job than what is there now. AOTS and X-Play are ok I guess, but not that entertaining. Also, I think Sessler would be a great moderator for an 'around the horn' type show.

What I think would be great are geek/nerd/tech related shows to be brought to a channel like G4. Not just about video games, but other things people who play video games would like too. We don't only talk about video games here because there are so many more things that we can also talk about. I absolutely loves the show Code Monkeys and was sad to see it get cancelled. Open everything up and request pilot auditions from people much in the same way 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia' came about. Three nobody's shot the pilot for that show for less than $200 and pitched the idea to everybody who would listen until FX picked it up. Get user created content ideas and make some cheap but tech/game related shows and go from there.

I haven't seen Game of Thrones, but I hear a lot of gamers talking about it, despite it not directly being about games. The Guild is another example of what a show could be like if they put it on a game themed channel. I'm not a big fan of The Guild, but it's style and theme falls under what I would be looking for.

  7. I would imagine there are enough well-spoken game writers here in LA for you to do your own pilot, Raymond. I'd gladly participate, though I'm a year out of any game-related job.

I imagine there'd need to be some social community element to it, but you're more up on that than anyone else I know.

I think the key is mostly keeping it upbeat and interesting. That could be tough to do live, perhaps.

    1. He's right, Ray. You could totally pull it off.

Even if it's a monthly webcast type of thing in the beginning. That's a start. An idea like that is bound to get buzz.

I'm proud of him. I've known him all my life and he misses my party this weekend for the award ceremony. I guess it is a good reason. This guy was always my healer in our WoW raids and a super competitive gamer.

Though I still owned him at World Tour.

    1. haha that's pretty cool that you know him. Didn't they do this same contest with last year's game too? Or am I just imaging that this 'pitch a perfect game' contest is old?

      1. They did it last year as well. This guy is ultra competitive at games though. I'd call this his greatest achievement thus far (pun intended) but number 2 on his list was being in the top 20 teams in the world in WoW arenas. Very spectacular.

      2. I thought they did. I imagine he would have to be competitive to train for this the way he did, but I also lol'd when I read that it was his wife's idea.

Were you also part of that WoW team? How do they even rank that? I would guess it could have something to do with number of things completed and time spent to accomplish raids, but that's pure speculation since I'm not familiar with the game.

  9. I hope you guys are watching the Heat-Bulls game.

You can actually see Erik Spoelstra saying: "You can't see me!"

    HA, ha, hA, HA, hA!!!

Suck it, Oprah, Obama, Rham & Tokz.

    Bring on Dallas!!

    1. I'm mad I couldn't watch all of the game tonight, and that I'm at my fiance's place and not mine so I can't watch SC or any of the post game stuff. Hopefully they have some good videos and recaps online somewhere.
