Scared of Gotham City Impostors

When I first heard about Gotham City Impostors, I was psyched. In my head it combined the multiplayer gameplay of Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood with the awesome characters of the Batman universe. I had visions of diving through the Gotham skyline as Nightwing, hot on the trail of Killer Croc.

Then a few of my journalists friends told me more details about the game and I read the press release. On paper, the game sounds like a standard shooter featuring characters “inspired by” Batman and The Joker. Here’s a clip from the press release:

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Entertainment today announced Gotham City Impostors, an original download-only first-person shooter where players battle for control of an unhinged Gotham City overrun by impostors inspired by the DC Comics characters Batman and The Joker.

Yeah, that sounds pretty lame. It could very well turn out to be a nice little downloadable game, but a shooter is not what Batman fans want. The “glorified tag” gameplay of ACB sounds perfect for a multiplayer Batman game. The Bat Family’s no-gun policy fits in with that style. Instead it sounds like Gotham City Impostors will be a fairly generic shooter.

What do you think of this game? Will it be a vanilla shooter with the Batman license slapped on? Or will the talented people at Monolith be able to make something cool?

  1. So you are John Q Public vigilantes with shotguns and hockey pads?

Sounds generic. They'll use the license to sell this and to help market AA sequel this year

  2. For some reason, when I had first read about Batman: Arkham Asylum years ago, I left the article with the impression that it was a first person shooter… I have no idea why.

But, I had thought about how it would work all things considered. I realized that the Bat-family has multiple non-lethal projectile weapons they could use whereas the villains weapons could be very lethal.

I also considered a possible stealth element and have a decent focus on first person melee combat for the heroes against increased firepower with the villains. Kind of like how Splinter Cell: Double Agent was, but better.

The villains would also not have bat-grapples.

It could work, but I'm honestly sick to death of FPS games. Even 3PS is starting to make me twitch. I like new concepts (a foreign concept in Hollywood). I yearn for creativity. The more complex, the better. I want to see the art slip out from under all the industry bullshit and rise to the top. As dynamic as a canvas that video games are, it's insane to sequel the hell out of the same old same old… but it seems to be what makes the money.

  3. having played Batman: AA was enough to get me excited for AC, but this game sounded good too when I first heard about it. Still would like to learn more about it, but playing a demo will probably have to be what finalizes my decision on it.
