Coffee Talk #326: Debating a Fall Release for the iPhone 5

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, the brilliant mic work by Shawn Michaels, Triple, and The Undertaker on last night’s Raw, Jose Canseco’s evil twin, or Barry Bonds’ ex-girlfriend’s entertaining testimony, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Since 2008, Apple has announced a new iPhone model at its annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC). It looks like that will not be the case this year. The Loop — one of the most reliable sources of leaked Apple info — has reported that WWDC 2011 will be software only. Taking the rumor a step further, TechCrunch’s sources told it that the next iPhone (iPhone 5? iPhone 4G?) will be announced in September for a Fall 2011 release. If the second rumor is true then this could mark an interesting shift in Apple’s consumer electronics strategy.

Traditionally, Apple’s September events have focused on the iPod. With the crazy success of the iPhone and iPad, the iPod has become less important. Some have argued that it makes more sense to release the next iPhone later in the year in order to make it one of the most desirable holiday gifts around. The counter-argument is that Apple already has a hard time meeting demand for iPhones when they’re released in the summer; compounding the release of a hot new product with the holiday rush would be a recipe for disaster.

Does Apple even need a new iPhone this summer? The iPhone 4 (on AT&T and Verizon) is still selling at a brisk rate. Additionally, pushing the release to later this year would give Apple a chance to implement a next-gen LTE radio that’s more battery efficient while allowing the next iPhone to take advantage of the outstanding speeds offered by Verizon LTE. The counter-argument is that over the next few months there will be several Google Android phones with 4G speeds, dual-core processors, qHD screens, and more. Some say Apple has the luxury of time. Others don’t.

How do you think things will shake out? Will the iPhone be announced at a later date this summer? Or will it be announced in September? Should Apple continue to launch iPhones in the June/July? Or will it make more bank kicking things off in September/October? Kindly vote in the poll and share your thoughts!

  1. OMG talking about RAW lol, last night we were channel surfing and I randomly told my gf to turn to RAW because I had a feeling something cool was happening. She begrudgingly obliged to my request and lo and behold there was HBK, HHH, and the Taker all in ring. It was glorious, then we changed the channel lol.

    1. That was one of the best segments on Raw all year. Brilliant stuff that really sold the upcoming match. As an HBK mark, I would hate for Hunter to break the streak. It would be used to say that Triple H > HBK, which is SO not the case.

      1. I seriously doubt HHH will win. He's lost to Taker at Mania once already and he already has a secure foothold in the industry. We've said before, if the streak will ever get broken, it will more than likely be to someone up and coming so Taker can pass the torch.

I also don't think Taker has too many more Manias in him.

      2. The best segment in years was the Rock and Cena confrontation, that is until the Miz interrupted. Really puts it in perspective how forgotten about and how out of place he really is.

      3. That segment was poorly paced. Cena's response took way too long, which had The Rock pacing around the ring, sweating, and NOT talking for way too long. The Miz was actually better than Cena in the clip. Cena's reply was okay, but other than that he spent his time grinning like a schmuck. The Rock botching the kip up looked pretty bad.

The Rock started off great, but it was downhill after that, except for the AA at the end.

  2. I wish windows phone 7 wasn't on that poll because that is what I would vote for, screw it I'm voting because of Android.

  3. From the sources I've read, it does seem to be most likely true. Sucks in my case, because I've been holding out with a now-no-longer-supported iPhone 3G, begging it to hold on until June so I could upgrade to v5… As it is, I bought the 3G just a couple months before the 3GS came out, and regretted not waiting then.

We'll see what happens, I suppose.

  4. FIREFOX 4.0 SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!

I like to play Bejeweled Blitz on FB (I just do okay). On Chrome it plays fine and uses about 15% of my AMD X2 6400+ (3.0Ghz), its older but adequate.

On FF 4.0 it uses 80% of my CPU and glitches and freezes every time there is movement.

      1. No other than that I haven't used it all that much. I'll check out other thing tonight though.

    1. Yeah FF4 seems to slow down my computer down a lot too. FF in general does that usually compared to chrome. The only reason Chrome really slows mine down is because I have about 20 tabs open right now and that's sort of a lot. I used to play Bejeweled Blitz on facebook too, It's been a while since I've played though. No particular reason why, it's actually a fairly fun game.

  5. Holy crap everyone!! I found my N64!!!!

I want to get some good games. I have mario 64, starfox, the wrestling ones, mario party 2, goldeneye and mario golf. Any other games i should get?

    1. mario kart is another must. I love starfox 64. I used to be able to beat that game choosing any path through the worlds that you could choose in about an hour. Tried it again a few months ago and I was a bit rusty, but that was one of my favorites. 1080 snowboarding was a fun one too.

  6. @bsu

Yeah i know! It made me wish there was a starfox for the wii. I had mario kart but idk where it is. It wasnt with the bag. Im thinking of buying fifa 98, mortal kombat trilogy, and killer instinct. I'll look into that snowboarding game.

    1. @Tokz

The snowboarding game was always pretty fun to me, and should be cheap. I wish they would make a new StarFox game that was good, the Gamecube destroyed StarFox and made it unbearable to play on the system. Mario Kart, Goldeneye, and Mario Party 2 are some of my favorite multiplayer games on that system. It's making me wanna pull mine out again and start playing, that or my NES.

  7. @slicky

Thanks. I'll look into wetrix and blast corps.

    @bsu

Good thing i avoided that starfox game for gc. Yeah most of the games i want to get arent over $10 except killer instinct but thats not going to stop me.
