Coffee Talk #273: Your Favorite Holiday Gifts

I hope everyone had an excellent holiday. I’m still fighting off a Christmas cold, but I was thrilled to spend time with my family. Now let’s share stories of our holiday loot!

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, the pain of returning gifts, Kelly Osbourne fighting with her ex on Twitter, or airport delays, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

I hope everyone had an excellent holiday. I’m still fighting off a Christmas cold, but I was thrilled to spend time with my family. Now let’s share stories of our holiday loot! What was the best gaming gift you received this year? How about non-gaming?

As for me, I didn’t get any gaming gifts. My brother picked me up some Rusty’s coffee (he lives in Hawaii), which is something I’ve wanted to try for years. It has been excellent so far, but it’s a darker roast than I’m used to. You know I geek out with my coffee, so you can imagine my excitement over brewing coffee from a fine Hawaiian roaster.

Now it’s your turn! I’m psyched to see what Santa and/or Hanukkah Harry got you this year!!!

  1. I still have a few to get. So far The Pacific on bluray and my AppleTV are great.

Someone gave me Black Ops today on 360.

  2. black ops is the first game that i can honestly say is better on 360 than on ps3….first game ive owned anyways

    1. yes the game seems better to me on the 360 as well but the PS3 has better match contracts from what i see.

  3. My 40" HDTV in combination with my new Xbox is obviously at the top of the gaming list.

I still have a few to get as well, but I'm thinking about shoes. I could use some new shoes.

I think the only non-gaming gift I got so far was a Pittsburgh Penguins shirt… everything else could be related to gaming. Unless you count the mini-DVI to HDMI cable I got… since I'm running a Mac to my HDTV, I suppose it's non-gaming, but it could be used for gaming.

The best gift I got though was the expressions on my kids faces when they got their Christmas bounty. The look on my daughter's face when she came down the stairs and saw a Barbie Dream House was priceless.

And the fact that my son got videogames, nerf guns, action figures, and a tent for Christmas and STILL says the favorite gift he got was a guitar*… makes me happy in thinking I'm doing something right.

*Meanwhile, the guitar was a piece of shit my Mother-In-Law picked out and the bridge cracked off on Christmas morning. Come my next paycheck, I'm going down to Guitar Center and getting him a Squier Strat and a little 15 watt amp (and headphones… of course).

I don't know what your "normal" style is but I buy one new pair of Johnston and Murphy every year and they are the best shoes I have ever owned. I send the old pair off to get resoled and buffed with their program. Pretty sweet deal. Just throwing that out there if you need a nice pair for work. I'm on my way to get a new pair soon.

      1. It's a thought.

However, I need "running around, chasing after kids" shoes.

For work, I can dress casually with all my tattoos exposed if I want to. I'm typically tucked away in the server room (which happens to be my office as well).

  4. Everything I got: A toaster, can opener, plunger, candy thermometer, 5.1 channel surround sound, Dell Streak, replacement Move controller, $200 (mom), $200 (dad), $137 Best Buy gift card (bought it from my little bro for $100 cash), $500 (boss), Hot Sauces, Shot Glass Ice Tray.

  5. I mostly got movies. Probably almost doubled my movie collection since I really don't buy movies very often. I didn't really get anything gaming related, but I plan on getting a copy of Pokemon Emerald soon just to play through it before Black/White comes out on March 6th! I don't really need any other gaming stuff right now, maybe a new headset for my 360 but that's about it. My Pokemon games are a higher priority right now though since my other headset does still actually work.

      1. Haha. I do have a spreadsheet with all of them listed. I Haven't updated it since somewhere around 1200 though. When I started the spread sheet it had the Movie name, Rating, DVD release date and synopsis, but that got to be too much. Now it is just an alphabetized list. Also 1 per month I put them all in alphabetical order to include on the new ones.

      2. That is pretty crazy. The synopsis seems tedious, but could be useful later on. I would just hate to have to write that for all those movies though.

      3. It wasn't bad until I quit keeping it up. Generally I get 6-7 per week, like today I only got 5, so if I would have stuck with it wouldn't have been so bad but now I am be several hundred behind.

      4. That's true, 5-6 isn't too bad per week- it's like organizing an iTunes library. It only works well if you do it from the start, not beginning 13,000 songs in like I am.

  6. @Everyone

What type of show would Hoarders and Intervention be classified as? Someone told me they consider them documentaries, but I don't think they fit that but I'm not sure because I have never seen them.

    1. I'd classify it as reality TV, because it's serial. A documentary about Intervention would focus drug abuse and the dangers of it with a few people being interviewed as references to said abuse. A TV reality serial would focus on different groups of people with a substance problem that is formulaic and, thus, always culminates in an intervention.

The same thing with Hoarders: A documentary on hoarding would focus on the cause, symptoms, actions, and consequences of hoarding (possibly in light of a bigger picture such as socially destructive behavior) and simply have a few real hoarders on as references along with doctors, interior designers, psychologists, neighborhood association representatives, and even law/code enforcement officers. A TV serial on hoarding seems to focus on one or two different people at a time and how hoarding is affecting their lives while trying to get the deviant behavior corrected. It focuses more on the people than the problem. When the next episode comes around, it (the show) will again focus on other hoarders and not actually address the subject of hoarding, but the people doing it.

  7. We had a ridiculous holiday. My mom sent us Kinect. We got a Wii. Plus a ton of games. My son loves Kinect Sports and Kinectimals. And EA Active 2 is kicking my ass (mind you, I shouldn't have let myself get this out of shape in the first place). Plus my son got a new bike. Overall, it was a great x-mas.

  8. 1 gallon of Grey Goose that didn't last 8 hours lol

1 check for $125 from my girls mother

1 copy of Assassins Creed Brotherhood

1 pair of Bose headphones provided from my girl

and a bunch of small things.

  9. i got 4 pairs of shoes. 1 was a pair of converse but not the GL or Superman ones. i should take a poll because i kinda like the batman and Justlce league ones too. which ones should i get, the GL, Batman, Superman, the Legion of Doom or Justice League ones.

I also got a bright blue zoo york hoodie and thermal.

$80 bucks, which (25 was spent getting batman: aa)

$25 itunes gift card and a pj set.

  10. Well, everyone at work pitched in and gave me a card with $200 in cash in it… I don't know why, but it was kind of embarrassing. Oh well. It was ironic since I spent just about $200 in gifts for all the ladies in the office.

My wife gave me a new electric shaver (Braun) because my 15-year-old Norelco just wasn't cutting it anymore (pun intended). I've only had it for a couple of days now, but I have to say that my new shaver is like the Rolls Royce of electric shavers. Totally sweet.

I got like four or five pairs of pants from my brother and parents and two tickets to go see Lewis Black this Thursday at the Hard Rock from my sister.

Aside from that, I got about eight bottles of wine (and one bottle of pear brandy) from various vendors and clients that are business-related and a $100 Best Buy gift card from one co-worker.

No games this year and for good reason. The last game I got as a gift was Fallout 3 from my brother that was last year's birthday present for me and I still haven't even taken the shrink wrap off of it… but I will… right after I'm done with Bioshock 2… that I'm still blaming SlickyFats on for making me impulse buy it from Amazon.

So… anybody want a bottle of wine?

    -M

    1. my fiance loves wine, I prefer scotch and don't see how anybody could like wine. lol. just my preference I guess. The Lewis Black show sounds pretty cool though.

  11. Watching a screener DVD of the Black Panther animated series. It's pretty cool so far. I love the art direction, it's pretty close to the comics, and the voice acting is very good. The DVD is on sale in a few weeks. I'll have a not-a-review up later this week.

    1. So im getting ready to watch inception before i go to bed and what do i see?? A teaser trailer for all star superman! Why is this not coming out until winter of next year!!! It makes me want to pick up the tbp.

      @rpad

Is the all star superman tbp worth reading for a superman mark such as myself?

    2. Ok, I read your post in the comment section to the far right and said wtf a Black Panther animated DVD, as in the Black Panther Party. Lmao!

      1. @ Iceman

I don't read comics or graphic novels, actually the last one i read was the Initial D manga.

      2. Whoops. You guys are right. My bad. I was thinking of DC's Black Lightning. For some reason I always get Black Panther and Black Lightning mixed up.

  12. I have decided I hate a lot of mainstream tech review sites. CNET seems to be the biggest offender. They will review a product PRE-launch or on the show floor months before it arrives. Then when the product has been out a while it is still the same prelaunch review on their site even though stuff has clearly changed. I think they have just gotten to big for their own good and have too many pots on the stove.

  13. Let's see…. I got a sweater, 2 teeshirts, some new jeans, an assorted collection of bath and body works stuff, a necklace, some candles, an ankle bracelet, some yarn (i knit a lot lol), an assortment of fuzzy socks, a mini food processor, a teapot, and Fallout: New Vegas :)

Got Magic: the Gathering: Duels of the Plainswalkers also, but that's mainly for Jeff and an assortment of expansions. Now he's been digging upstairs thru my book of real cards declaring we need to build decks again lol.

    1. @big blak

I just click on amazon banner rpad has at the top of the site and once i get to amazon i then search for what i am really looking for. I believe it works rpad has seen my non video game purchases.

      1. you're welcome. i didn't know if it would work the first time i did it or if it works everytime. This is why i ask him if he sees it. I know he probably gets annoyed by me asking him but i just want to make sure he gets his cut.
