Sony Ericcson Z1 (PSP Android Phone) Video Shows Controls

Here’s a nice “spy” video of the Sony Ericcson Z1 — the PlayStation Portable phone powered by Google Android. This video is much better than the one I posted earlier in the week. The user slides out the controls, revealing a d-pad and face buttons. You can also spot a PlayStation app in the menus. Check it out and let me know what you think (please)!

  1. Awesome. It appears to be fairly thick though and I have been spoiled by how thin my captivate is.

looks great though and near completion.

  2. yeah thats awesome…what do you think about it, ray?

my only hope is that they beef up the processor…1ghz doesnt seem adequate, given the rumors of the dual core phones set the hit the shelves in 2011…but you are a tech reporter, and im just a guy

    1. It looks nice, but Sony Ericcson hasn't been doing the best job with Android. It releases phones late, uses older tech, and is horrifically slow with updates. As for the CPU, I'm not bothered by the 1GHz speed. I'm more interested in what version of the Adreno GPU it will use. That's more important for the gaming aspect of it. I suspect that it will end up being just fine for PSP games.

    2. @Thunder

The 1Ghz CPU is the NEW version of the Qualcomm. It is a faster version of the 800MHz Scorpion.

  3. I wonder about how this device handles storage? The PSPgo has 16 gig? So would that be the size for this? Will this have the same ability as far as games are concerned as the current PSP?

Would it let you add an SD card? Would it let you play off of an SD card? Just curious.

Also does Android or more specifically Google allow memory stick format to be used in lieu of SDcard?

    1. @SG

The phone is supposed to use a Micro SD card slot instead of the Sony standard memory stick.

    2. The Xperia X10 uses MicroSD. I'm not certain the company would even want to go with Memory Stick Pro Duo. Remember, this is a Sony Ericsson product, not a Sony Computer Entertainment product.

I imagine playing off the card would be fine. We shall see though…hopefully at CES 2011.

  4. is there anyway to maximize battery life? I cant imagine this thing wont suck in that dept

    1. Battery life should be fine. The phone is very similar to the Galaxy S series, which are above average in the battery life department. Android 2.3 also has more advanced power management tools.
