Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Jayson Werth going to the Washington Nationals, your favorite deli meat, or skipping videogame Christmas parties because you’re feeling antisocial (sorry guys!), Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

When I first started playing Splatterhouse, I was amused by the game’s load times. “Really? How quaint,” I thought. As I started playing more of the game and the fights got harder, I went from amused to pissed off. In addition to the expected level load times, you have to wait 15 to 20 seconds each time you die. This seems like a small amount of time, but when you keep dying in a particularly challenging fight…well, it completely sucks.

I’m amazed that things like this still happen in 2010. This was understandable 15 years ago when disc-based console-gaming first became the norm. These days? It’s more than a little ridiculous. You shouldn’t have to install a game on your hard drive so that playing conditions are acceptable. You should be able to play off of a disc and have a reasonably smooth experience. It’s…confounding.

Even though technology has grown by leaps and bounds, there are still some glitches and annoyances that plague the gaming world. What are some things that bug you about gaming that shouldn’t be happening in 2010?

  1. Smartguy and I were just discussing how horrible the loads are on Gran Turismo 5. Game took 30 years to come out and then it took me several hours to install and load times are still abnormally long.

    Bad graphics or graphics engine. Halo is the worst about rendering. Cut-scenes and levels look like giant colored blobs for several seconds until finally textures begin to pop into place. Medal of Honor has been doing it a lot too though.

  2. the one that kinda gets to me is text dialog like in the Legend of Zelda. I love those games but i really wish that when you interact with people it wouldn't only be in text.

    @Werth

    I really don't think he's "Werth" all that. This is why the Nationals will never get out of debt.

    @fav deli meat

    Prosciutto.

    @skipping xmas parties

    it happens sometimes. I know i get into moods like that when i just go off the grid sometimes. don't worry about it.

    1. I like Werth…but mostly because he looks like WWE Edge and I dream of him giving a pitcher a spear after getting beaned. His contract is way too fat. He's a great hitter, but the Nationals are overpaying and giving him too many years.

      Prosciutto is pretty excellent, but I'm going to go with corned beef. I love corned beef reubens.

      1. yeah i agree he does look like Edge that's the reason i like him too. Everytime Edge gets hurt i tell everybody that baseball season must be around the corner. It would be awesome if he would spear a pitcher after getting beaned.

        hmmmm i don't know what it is i like but i like ham a lot as a deli meat. I can't have cooked ham. i hate ham when it's cooked. I like deli beef but like chicago has it where it's called an italian beef with some mozzarella cheese and some giardinera peppers. i think you'd like that too.

      2. me too. Which restaurant do you get them at in O'hare? My favorite place to get it from is called Portillo's but i don't think they have an airport stand. I only go there once in awhile because i don't want to get tired of it. I get my sandwich dipped on a croissant with cheddar cheese along with hot and giardinera peppers. now i want one :(

      3. you should try that place i hear they have location in California but i don't think they have any in LA. I think there is one near Anaheim.

    1. I think the saddest part of that statement was the part where you said “almost pulled.” So TNA let a guy go out and perform under the influence? Great job TNA. They’re lucky no one got hurt.

      1. Apparently he slept it off backstage. Ha!

        I think it's sadder that they put the belt on him in the first place. Why give a guy with a clearly unstable lifestyle the top position in the company?

      2. Remember Scott Hall's run in WCW, when he was constantly being pulled out of PPV title matches at the last minute? Lack of judgment isn't unique to TNA.

      3. No, I mean his run in WCW. I know they took the tag belts off of him and Nash once because of his alcohol issues, and I'm 50/50 as to whether it was actually a legit knee injury or his alcohol issues that pulled him out of the US title ladder match with Benoit that Jeff Jarrett ended up subbing in at the last minute.

  3. Nexus S announcement is a little mixed. No OLED or HSPA+? I'm also bummed that it is TMobile only. Their presence is pretty weak here.

  4. I'm back guys. My laptop crashed on me and I had to do a complete restore so I lost everything on my HDD. I tried to retrieve my password for this site but I never could for some reason so I just made another account. First, I'd like to say my Falcons are 10-2 and still don't get any respect in the media. Why not? I'm sorry but Peyton Manning and Brett Favre are not doing good this year so it's time to move on. Second, I'm proud to say that I have tickets to Wrestlemania in Atlanta next year. That title had better be off of The Miz and on someone worthy by then. It's sad when M.V.P. doesn't get used and gets released(I know he asked for it) but guys like Dolph Ziggler, Cody Rhodes, and Ted Dibiase gets a huge push.

    @Smartguy

    I was counting on the Bungles to knock your Saints down a peg but what was I thinking? After watching that entire game I now see why the Bungles are 2-10.

    1. @RROD

      I saw that the horseshoe is still being toted around in Atlanta. That is two weeks in a row that a special teams play in conjunction with penalties got the job done :P

      12/27 will be big.

      I'm curious to see if Atl can knock off Seattle in Seattle though. That's a long trip and crap weather.

      1. True, we have been pulling some wins out of nowhere but a W is a W. Yours Saints have been barely getting by bad teams. 12/27 indeed but remember that it will be in the Georgia Dome where the magic happens and there are horseshoes in every seat LOL

      2. @RROD

        Indeed a W is a W. Saints are getting hot though at the right time. Regardless it should be a great game. NFC south is tough this year.

      3. I think both you and RROD can testify that the AFC North is tough as hell and underrated as such.

      4. I wouldn't say tough as hell. They have 2 winning teams and 2 losing teams and those 2 winning teams are not underrated. Everyone in the media respect the Steelers and the Ravens. The NFC South has 3 winning teams and 1 losing teams and one of those winning teams has the best record but still gets no respect and another is the Superbowl champs and have been forgotten about in the media.

      5. Media… respecting the Steelers????

        That's news to me.

        The other truth remains that 2 of those losing teams have to play 6 games a year against teams in our division. That will screw with your record. If you watch the games and not the numbers, the games reflect that. Our division gets underrated because people watch the numbers too much.

        A fine example is the Steelers last year. Our record sucked, but look at the rest of the numbers.

        Every game (minus one) we lost was lost by 3 points or less (that minus one was 10 points). If you watched all of those, we got beat by clock management and miracles basically. This year, it's the mirror opposite of the same situations. Either way… down to the wire, knuckle biting, exciting games.

        We also had a 4000 yd QB, a 1000 yd RB, and 2 2000 yd WR's.

        The Browns this year… well, Smartguy knows.

        Underestimating the AFC North is a bad idea.

    2. Welcome back. This place isn't the same without you.

      Also, I'm so happy the Falcons don't play the Dolphins this year.

      Force Unleashed, Cleveland!!!!

  5. I really hate when spawn points put you in the worst places possible. If I'm dying a lot of times in a row, I might not want to spawn right in front of the huge deadly boss while leaving me defenseless. I actually felt like that happened in the Halo series too much, and the opposite of that is when you think there should be a checkpoint somewhere around you but it never comes. It feels like that in Army of Two sometimes. The load times are frustrating, but I don't feel like I have had to deal with too much of that in newer games that I have played. Slightly older games like Skate or Bioshock seem to have those problems, but I guess I usually write it off because they are a few years old now.

  6. I hate when you hit a button, and the game doesn't respond. That's happening to me alot in Mirror's Edge.

    If I had to rename that game, it would be called Splat: I hit the f**king jump button!

    1. it's all about timing and anticipating everything in that game. I never really had that problem in Mirror's Edge, you just have to get used to the momentum and handling of Faith.

      1. Yeah… me and Faith have never seen eye to eye.

        I'm more of a "Proof" guy.

        Seriously though, that game pisses me off to the point where I get vindictive against it. That's the only reason I will continue to play it.

        I'm masochistic like that.

  7. @N8R
    As is underestimating the NFC south. You and BSU can attest to that.

    I'm used to it since NOLA is a small market team.

    1. We didn't underestimate anybody.

      I'm saying our division has been tough as hell for some time now.

      I think the Browns would be a better team if they were in say… the AFC West.

  8. Obviously this doesn;t account for load times, but I think a lot of games come out w/ issues still because game companies are willing to just patch it post release in order to get it in stores sooner.

      1. Day 1 patches I don't have any problem with either. Games like Fallout: New Vegas that are still broken and were released in terrible condition…..THAT I have a problem with.

      2. This seems to mainly happen to big releases who's publishers refuse to miss that holiday season release date even if the devs tell them that the game is not ready and they need more time.

    1. frescheta is way better sir, especially if you have a "pizzazz" pizza cooker

      i could do a whole coffee talk about how awesome that machine is

    1. some of them are deserved

      harrison is a beast, but hes also a knucklehead

      in the steelers defense though, there were a few hits yesterday, namely the one that "didnt break" biig ben's nose, that warranted fines as well

  9. I highly recommend Bottle Shock. I like small-budget films and I like wine. While I didn't like it as much as Sideways, it's cool seeing Lonestar from Spaceballs, Captain Kirk (the one that used to date Bolivia Bunn), and Severus Snape in the same movie.
