Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, the RPad.tv Cyber Monday sale, your favorite turkey leftover dish, or Manny Pacquiao’s next opponent, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

I hope everyone had a fun, relaxing, and food-filled Thanksgiving. Let’s ease back into things by talking about the first videogame console you owned. My videogame friends span a broad age range; some of them started off with the Atari 2600, while others kicked off their game lives with the Nintendo Entertainment System. How about you?

As for me, I started off with the Fairchild Channel F (and chucked a controller at my friend’s face days after opening the box). My dad brought it back home one day as a surprise. I was so young that I had no concept of videogame consoles. Being able to control what was happening on the family television was pure magic to me — just completely fascinating. For the record, I had nothing to do with my father’s purchase, so it’s really his fault that I love videogames so much. Ha!

Now it’s your turn! What was your first videogame console?

  1. I started with the NES back in 1990 (we had just moved). Used to play it all the time. We bought EVERY games used and I had no idea that they were even sold in actual boxes and not just plastic sleeves for years. Before our mom sold it it we had nearly 80 games.

We got in trouble for fighting over it and got grounded from it for a full year. We counted down the days, bought games all year round that were good deals and finally it was like Christmas when we got it back.

  2. My first one was a NES and I can blame my father for that one too! A lot of the classic Nintendo games like Mario, Zelda, Duck Hunt, and the still crazy challenging TMNT fill my early gaming memories. Two semi obscure NES games also remind me of the late 80s early 90s, Clash at Demonhead and The Adventures of Bayou Billy, I know there is one Rpader out there that knows of one of these.

In a crazy twist of video game fate we moved when I was 6 my mother found a box with her "early 20s" hand writing on it. Turned out to be an Atari 7800 and about 20 games so I guess I can blame my mom as well! DK (or whatever it was known by back then) and Pitfall were my two favorites, Centipede and Asteroids was fun too.

    1. Loved me some Bayou Billy.

Games I owned I feel like no one else played (or knows)

      8 Eyes?

      California Games?

      Gunsmoke?

      NARC?

      Pinball?

      Hydlide?

      Yo! Noid

      1. I definitely played Yo! Noid, can't say so about the rest although it is possible because a few titles feel familiar.

      2. I actually used to have a copy of Hydlide still in the original box in mint condition. I didn't care too much for the game though.

  3. Totally love this Infant Sorrow song from Get Him to the Greek. The furry walls scene was hilarious and I love that it "inpired" a song.

I also love that Hanson covered it. Covering a fictional band! That's awesome!!!

  4. I had an Atari. A buddy of mine had the intellivision and a C64. Since I got that Atari, the only systems I haven't owned are the PSP and PS1(always an extra to borrow). Other than that, I've had them all.

  5. Anyone have their secrets posted on WikiLeaks? Pretty crazy stuff. While the TSA is searching four-year olds with leg braces and popping urine bags, some low-ranking scrub was able to copy classified information using a DVD-R in a Lady Gaga jewel case. Amazing.

    1. Yeah I just read about that. I think the next logical step is for the gubment to ban optical media sales in the US. *hehe*

  6. My first system was the NES but my cousin exposed me to video games at the age of 6 with the Atari 2600. i basically begged my mom for an Atari and then a NES when a friend down the street from me got one for his bday. I got mine from my bday too and i had it forever. I think my mom threw it out and i was disappointed later on to find out that she did that.

    @Rpadtv sale

I will try my best but i'm already scrounging up money for my gf's xmas gift.

    @fav leftovers

my gf's stuffing, haha seriously though. she makes it with ground beef, italian sausage along with normal stuffing things.

    @pacquiao's next opponent

i would love to see juan manuel marquez get his shot at manny again even though i know he will get smashed again for moving up in weight. He totally dominated Katsidis hopefully this is the last i hear about him being a contender for anything.

    1. I bet she'd look good in an RPad.tv camisole. You could hit two birds with one stone. Ha!

Man, that stuffing sounds awesome. I want some!

I'd love to see Pacquiao and JMM at 140, but there are several hurdles. First, Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions are being idiots. It'll be hard for them to work on anything together. Secondly, Roach was saying that if JMM wants it then it would have to be at 147, which is too much for JMM.

While he put on a great performance against Katsidis, I wouldn't say it was dominant. Seven years ago Katsidis wouldn't have been able to lay a glove on him. JMM's legs aren't what they used to be, but he makes up for it in other ways.

      1. i bet she would too but i'm always hesitant to buy her clothes because you never want to get the size wrong. either too big they think you're calling them fat or too small they think you don't know their size. i'll have her pick it out later on.

I would send some UPS/FedEX Next day it over to you if the stuffing wasn't going on 5 days old.

maybe next year, i'll do it the day after Thanksgiving if you want to take the risk.

Marquez would still get dominated by Pacquiao at 140. The weight class he's in is perfect for him but he won't get many big money fights. Nacho screwed him over a couple of years ago when he decided to fight John instead of taking Pacquiao a 3rd time for less money. I hear they're talking about Morales v Marquez again. I really don't want to see this but i will my Mexican pride will not let me miss this.

      2. One idea that Schaefer floated was Marquez/Morales in Mexico City. That would be huge.

Nacho is a brilliant trainer, but he sucks as a manager. WTF go to Indonesia and risk a home-town decision against John? That was just stupid.

      3. It would be huge. So huge they should have it at Estadio Azteca and i would make a pilgrimage to see that fight! I agree Nacho is not a good manager.

  7. Eh, here's the full list:

    Atari 2600

    NES

    NSES

    PS1

    PS2

    XBOX

    GC

    360

    PS3

    PSP

    DS

Wii (as of Dec 25th 2010)

  8. My first console was a Colecovision, which is basically the same as an Atari 2600. There's probably a better story between the differences of a Colecovision and an Atari 2600, but I don't know it, and I was WAY too young to care then. I was in Kindergarten I think. NES didn't come out until I was in 2nd grade.

I played Pitfall. Yars Revenge, and some Pac-Man knock-off called Mouse Hunt (or something like that) alot. However, my mom would spend HOURS playing Stampede.

The first time I saw an NES, it was at my friend's birthday party. He had one and my brother and I were both mesmerized. We had to get one. For Christmas of that same year, there was one under the tree. It was the Action Pack. That meant it came with SMB only. No Duck Hunt, No Zapper. Had to buy that stuff separately later.

Around the same time, my brother and I were getting in to wrestling pretty fierce. We wrestled each other… ALOT. One day, I body slammed him, sat him up, and put him in a chin lock while sticking my tongue out to all the imaginary fans in true Gene Simmons form. At this point, my brother stands up abruptly and the top of his head collides squarely with the bottom of my chin causing me to bite my tongue damn near off.

I needed 12 stitches in my tongue to sew it back on. I was on a liquid diet for 2 weeks and stayed home from school the whole time so I could follow said liquid diet and not be stuck with the school food.

This story has precedence, because this is where I discovered the joy of endless gaming sessions.

  9. I started at 5 with the NES. Not sure who brought it home and I pretty much sucked at games back then too.

    The list:

    NES

    SNES

    N64

    PS1

    Gamecube

    Xbox

    Xbox 360

    GBC

    GBA

    DS

    1. @smartguy

i've done that already but it always seems to lead to arguements for me too. it's a lose lose situation for the Tokz.

  10. Well my age is really showing here because although I played NES and SNES when I was younger, I did only have an original fat gray Game Boy as my first gaming device ever. I personally had nothing else until I bought myself an N64 for $20 from Gamestop when I was in about junior high (around 2000). All of my friends had game consoles, so I had played Atari, NES, SNES, N64, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, and Gamecube. I have owned all of the game boys as well- GB, GBP, GBC, GBA, GBA SP, DS Lite, DSi.

The N64 was my first non-handheld console though, and I spent a lot of time playing all kinds of games on that thing. I then later got an NES for myself and dedicated my time to beating the Legend of Zelda (yes, both times for the full win) over the course of about a month playing only after school and track practice. The N64 was great though because I have 3 siblings, so we each could have a controller and play mario kart, goldeneye, mario party, diddy kong racing, etc.

  11. Nobody else here had Neo-Geo, Saturn or a Jaguar??!!!!

I was gifted a Virtual Boy as well.

Guess I was the benefactor of my dad being a computer engineer lol. He bought all kinds of stuff.

  12. @Sandrock
Dragon Force was great. I liked a lot of those games. It was hard for me to get some (games) though which sucked. DoDonPachi was one I wanted but never got.

  13. list

    atari 2600

    NES

    Game boy

    Genesis

    Sega Cd

    Game Gear

    Saturn

    3 dO

Neo Geo (got it years later and didnt pay 800 bucks for it)

    n64

    ps1

    ps2

    ps3

    psp

    xbox 360

  14. Oh man my first console was the NES, can't exactly remember the year but I had to be under 10. My uncle and aunt gave it to me b/c their kids who were over twice my age didn't show any real interest anymore. I used to beg my mom every week to go rent something new at the only video rental place in town lol (before Movie Gallery showed up, but now neither one is there any more). I think I owned about 15 games for it that came with it when I got it. But but it and and a lot of my games were stolen in college
