What Are You Playing This Weekend?

I’m going to pop in Assassin’s Creed 2 to prepare for Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood. I’m excited for ACB and hope that some of you will join me for some multiplayer action. Aside from that, I’m going to play some SmackDown vs. Raw 2011 and Wordfeud for Android.

How about you? What’s on your weekend playlist?

  1. FInishing up my case study for Verizon tonight. (awesome that I was assigned this company, almost like throwing Brer Rabbit into the briar patch). Maybe some 2k11 afterwards. Depends.

Tomorrow, some WoW and then off to the Hornets game.

    Sunday….football. No gaming.

  2. CoD Black OPs, I'll be getting it today according to Amazon.

FF13, yes i still haven't finished it. I haven't really played anything lately, i post what i want to play and never get to do it.

Halo: Reach, Nba2k11, possibly some NHL11 (n8 if you see me online and you want to play let me know).

      1. challenge accepted! but i will lose because i've yet to play an nhl game on the 360 and i even sucked on the ps3 version too.

    1. Hey, Tokz, if you play Halo Reach this weekend and wouldn't mind some company, hit me up if you see me online. I play that game almost every day and I would like to join you if you're doing campaign, multiplayer or firefight.

  3. Probably just some Pokemon HeartGold and Diamond. I discovered that breeding would be a whole lot easier in HeartGold if I can get the power band, anklet, bracer, etc. The problem is that I am still playing someone else's game on there (since I got it used) and they didn't get to the battle frontier yet, so I still need to beat the elite four on that game and then get a ton of battle points as quickly as possible to speed up my breeding. I haven't really played anything else recently, I tried playing Halo last night but got halfway through the first game and the server shut down. So much for that. lol.

Before Pokemon though I have to finish a business proposal for an English class on Monday and spend a little bit of time with my fiance.

      1. I do what I can! Speaking of which, I am looking for a Scyther, Aipom, Garchomp, and some of the legendaries. I just beat the Elite Four on HeartGold (had brother let me use a couple of his ringers so I could make quick work of it) and next I will be doing a lot in the battle tower there so I can get the items I need to make it easier to breed the Venusaur and Arcanine that I'm working towards.

I still wish I knew how to rewire the DS though because I would love to customize it so the button scheme was the same as an xbox 360 controller. Ever since I started playing xbox I have not liked Nintendo controls, they feel backwards, which I know is weird because I've been playing Nintendo systems for much longer.

Getting back into Pokemon always makes me wish I never stopped playing. It was a lot harder to feel motivated to play though because I only knew one other person who played and I never really see them.

      2. Yeah I remember that article, which was one of my inspirations for wanting to breed and train one. He would be an annoying pokemon to fight, for sure- which is a good reason to want to have him in my lineup. My notes application on my laptop is filled with only pokemon notes, stats, move sets, berries, items, etc. And I also have a notebook with a couple pages filled with IV's and lists of parents/children/natures/characteristics. It's tough getting prepared, but I'm working on it.

But I am going to have to work pretty hard to come up with something unique enough to catch you off guard (more than just getting lucky on picking the right opener or something along those lines).

      3. It's been a while since I've really battled. And I still have a bit to remember/learn about types and move sets. I'm hoping to figure all that out as I figure out who I really want to battle with and breed/train them all.

  4. @KINECT

I need to spend some time with my Kinect I guess. It is not even close to what it was advertised to be. You get about 8 similar "Xbox" do this and that commands. Can't turn it on and off like it showed in the ads.

It DOES NOT recognize different people. Oh it will say "IDENTIFYING" at the top of the screen but that is it. Doesn't change out the avatars at all.

While using the menus you have to keep one had at your side other wise if it sees 2 hands it the cursor starts jumping around.

There is A LOT of LAG in the Kinect Adventures games.

Setup. You have to set it up each time, though the first time is by far the longest. To be fair you have to calibrate the Move each time too.

It does seem like a solid piece of equipment and has great technology in it, they just should have some software to support the thing. So far I want to take it back for a refund.

    1. My fiance really wants one, and we know another couple who did get one. They absolutely love it and think it is the greatest thing ever. But to the best of my knowledge this is the first xbox they have owned, they might have a Wii, and they would not classify themselves as gamers whatsoever. That is why Kinect will do well, just like how the Wii targeted non-gamers.

    2. It did seem rushed. They built up too much hype for it at E3 2009.

They never should have faked that Milo video. They are going to be kicking themselves in the ass very soon.

      1. Yes they are shoved down your throat right off the bat when it detects the Kinect. The Kinect interface reminds me of some of the $2 PS Eye games I have on my PS3. It works in the exact same way as them.

    1. You know… I have Fable 3… but it's sitting in my garage waiting to get wrapped up and put under the tree for my son.

      So here's my poll…

Should I bust it out or wait. Remember that good things come to those who wait.

      1. Wait. It's your kid's present, not yours. If I unwrap a gift on Christmas morning only to discover that it has been used by my dad, I would have been pretty peeved.

        -M

      2. Wait for it . It is an awesome game and you might need to get another copy for yourself lol. When ever you want to play it I'll be ready to give you stacks of cash.

      3. It ain't like that.

If I busted it out early, it would be for 2 reasons.

        1) I'm giving it to him early for the hell of it (no holiday attached).

        and

        2) We have a SURPLUS of games to give him on Christmas… which is true. He's up to 5 right now and it may be 6 soon.

Still I think I'll wait. I'm not really overly anxious to play it. I'm actually more anxious to play Super Scribblenauts (which is also hiding out in the garage).

  5. I apparently might be playing NHL11 with tokz… but other than that… I'm not sure.

I beat New Vegas (one way) and am not completely anxious to start my evil game just yet. I started a RTW in SVR 2011 with Jericho last night, and I may want to finish that. I also got the Scott Pilgrim game because it was on sale (which is awesome for it's retro beat-em-up style but it's slightly painful on the eyes) and I have that on the table. I also have yet to finish the Undead Nightmare pack for RDR.

    Decisions, decisions.

      1. Have you seen the movie?

It's awesome. It hits on so many levels. Gamers, anime fans, musicians, making fun of hipsters… it's great.

      2. yes i have seen the movie. i love that movie. i wish it was a little more like the series but i understand there's only so much you can do in 2 hours.

      3. I never read the series, but from what I understand, they strayed from it quite a bit.

For example, they barely touched on the sub-space thing in the movie.

      4. this is true. they made evil ex 3 look like a douche for punching the highlights out of knives. they should've used Envy more. The books made you care more on how he progressed. If it was the first time watching it and you didn't care for the effects or nods to games then you'd be like why is he fighting for this chick??

    1. I haven't seen it yet, but I haven't really been able to tell whether I think I might like it or if it would be painful and annoying for me to watch.

    2. Bare in mind that Smartguy is the kind of crazy that would want to do math for a living.

I loved it… but it might have to do with the fact that I've been in bands with people exactly like that.

      1. That is true, lol. Of course I am the kind of crazy that would love to do research for a living (once I find a job in Chicago doing that). It looks good, I just don't want my expectations to be too high, or think it will be really great since I am not a big fan of Michael Cera.

  6. I didnt care for the videogame effects when he did things, it just looked bad. The characters were not compelling to me. Interesting premise, just not done well.

    My opinion.

    1. I wasn't exactly expecting to see Goodfellas when I watched it. So for the compelling characters bit… I expected it to be hammy. Which I can stand. Afterall, it's no secret that I'm a fan of the B, C, and D movies.

I thought the video game effects looked bad because those old school games looked bad. It's more of a cultural thing than anything else. Hell, the name of his band was Sex Bob-Omb.

Then there's the hipster angle. To be honest, I don't know if these people even exist in NOLA, but on the northern side of the East Coast (and BIG TIME in Chicago) they are very prevalent. Those people are WAY too serious to not make fun of them.

Of course you are entitled to your opinion as I am entitled to defend mine.

      1. I live in hipster central. My apartment is in between Boston University and Boston College and numerous high schools. I hate them too.

      2. At the risk of sounding more old-fashioned than my views on journalism; What exactly is a "hipster?" A definition or two would be nice.

        -M

      3. This is straight from Urban Dictionary and actually does them justice:

Hipsters are a subculture of men and women typically in their 20's and 30's that value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter. The greatest concentrations of hipsters can be found living in the Williamsburg, Wicker Park, and Mission District neighborhoods of major cosmopolitan centers such as New York, Chicago, and San Francisco respectively. Although "hipsterism" is really a state of mind,it is also often intertwined with distinct fashion sensibilities. Hipsters reject the culturally-ignorant attitudes of mainstream consumers, and are often be seen wearing vintage and thrift store inspired fashions, tight-fitting jeans, old-school sneakers, and sometimes thick rimmed glasses. Both hipster men and women sport similar androgynous hair styles that include combinations of messy shag cuts and asymmetric side-swept bangs. Such styles are often associated with the work of creative stylists at urban salons, and are usually too "edgy" for the culturally-sheltered mainstream consumer. The "effortless cool" urban bohemian look of a hipster is exemplified in Urban Outfitters and American Apparel ads which cater towards the hipster demographic. Despite misconceptions based on their aesthetic tastes, hipsters tend to be well educated and often have liberal arts degrees, or degrees in maths and sciences, which also require certain creative analytical thinking abilities. Consequently many hipsters tend to have jobs in the music, art, and fashion industries. It is a myth that most hipsters are unemployed and live off of their parent's trust funds. Hipsters shun mainstream societal conventions that apply to dating preferences and traditional "rules" of physical attraction. It is part of the hipster central dogma not to be influenced by mainsream advertising and media, which tends to only promote ethnocentric ideals of beauty. The concepts of androgyny and feminism have influenced hipster culture, where hipster men are often as thin as the women they date. The muscular and athletic all-American male ideal is not seen as attractive by confident and culturally-empowered hipster women who instead view them as symbols of male oppression, sexism, and misogyny. Likewise, culturally-vapid sorority-type girls with fake blond hair, overly tanned skin, and "Britney Spears tube-tops" are not seen as attractive by cultured hipster males who instead see them as symbols of female insecurity, low self-esteem, and lack of cultural intelligence and independent thinking. Hipsters are also very racially open-minded, and the greatest number of interracial couples in any urban environment are typically found within the hipster subculture. Although hipsters are technically conformists within their own subculture, in comparison to the much larger mainstream mass, they are pioneers and leaders of the latest cultural trends and ideals. For example, the surge of jeans made to look old and worn (i.e. "distressed"), that have become prevalent at stores such as The Gap, American Eagle, Abercrombie and Fitch, and Hollister, were originally paraded by hipsters who shopped in thrift stores years before such clothing items were mass produced and sold to the mainstream consumer. The true irony here is that many of the detractors of hipster culture are in fact unknowingly following a path that hipsters have carved out years before them. This phenomena also applies to music as well, as many bands have become successful and known to mainstream audiences only because hipsters first found and listened to them as early-adopters of new culture. Once certain concepts of fashion and music have reached mainstream audiences, hipsters move on to something new and improved. Because of the rise of various online photo-blog and social networking sites, insights into urban hipster culture is reaching sheltered suburban audiences at an exponential rate. Cultural "norms" have been deconstructed by hipster culture as a whole. Hipsterism is often dismissed as just an image thing by some, but the culture as a whole is effecting changes in society, leading to feelings of insecurity and resentment in people who are no longer a part of the cultural ruling class. For example, a lot of anti-hipster sentiment evidently comes from culturally-clueless suburban frat boy types who feel that the more sensitive, intelligent, and culturally aware hipster ideal threatens their insecure sense of masculinity. Anti-hipster sentiment often comes from people who simply can't keep up with social change and are envious of those who can.

      4. Wow! Thanks, N8. I don't really think I've ever been exposed to these kinds of people before, but I guess that explains the increase in "faded" and "worn" look of new jeans I've been seeing in the past few years at all of these department stores down here.

It seems like they are Gen X stereotypes to me. I guess I should be grateful that I don't live in these places where these people are.

        -M

      5. It was just bad characters N8. When he started reading the email from the first guy who referenced the girl in his dreams he just said "this is boring" and deleted it. The outright apathy of his character turned me off.

The effects don't have to be Avatar like, I think you misunderstood me. They looked bad because the fights themselves looked bad.

I expected to like the movie, unfortunately I did not. I'm a fan of crap movies, but if I can't at least like the atmosphere the movie creates I need to like a character. It just didn't do it for me.

If we have hipsters, I haven't noticed. I don't pay attention to them at school either if they are there. Then again I wouldn't see them in my classes probably. I take graduate level courses working towards my 150 hours, so I am with a lot of people my age.

      6. That apathy thing is a defining trait of hipsters.

They must not exist down south.

They come in all ages (I know 50 year old hipsters) and they are typically rather intelligent yet apathetic people. They usually drink alot as well.

It's like the the Seattle grunge movement on horse tranquilizers.

      7. I'm sure there is some variant around this way, but I must be blessed that I avoid them lol.

        :)

  7. Rented 'Blood Stone' after work today on an impulse-rent. Joystiq said it was fun, we'll see. Then some more Wasteland explorin'!
