Coffee Talk #246: What’s Your Favorite Videogame Commercial?

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, the Amazon “Pedophile Guide” controversy, Lacey Von Eric realizing that she can’t wrestle, or Yao Ming getting injured…again, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Videogames have had some brilliant and memorable commercials over the years. While marketing has been getting slicker and smarter, some classic commercials can’t be beat. My favorite videogame commercial of all time is the “Genesis Does!” spot. The song is catchy, the point is clear, and the cameos are awesome. It features Michael Jackson, Joe Montana, Pat Riley, and (an incredibly out-of-shape) James “Buster” Douglas. Check it out:

Man…that brings back some great memories.

Now it’s your turn! What are some of your favorite videogame commercials?

  1. I have to go with a more modern advertisement. It made me buy my first digital game on a computer actually. The SC2 Ghosts of the Past video that Blizzard released a week or 2 ahead of SC2 dropping.

  2. man, the good ol genesis…i bought mine with revenge of shinobi…still one of my favorite games

my favorite commercial….hmm…going old school here

ill go with this power glove commercial, my 9 year old self is still a little bitter about how this P.O.S. peripheral was marketed

  3. i don't remember that many commercials from back in the days but i remember the one you posted. i have a recent one too the Wii Punch out! one

    @Lacey Von Erich

did she retire??? she's pretty to look at. i will miss her.

  4. My favorite ads for video games aren't in a video form, they are print ads. Time Splitters had an ad on the left page showing the main character shooting through a portal, and a few pages later on the right side it showed a bullet coming out of a portal about 200 years later and was about to hit a robot through the head, who happened to be holding the main character hostage 200 years later. It was a really cool concept I thought which showed the nature of the game very well in a print form.

My other favorites were some Hitman ads that were very misunderstood and examined way to in depth when they were pretty basic and straightforward. Here they are…

Unfortunately too many people took these ads to mean that Hitman was a rape/murder fantasy game and use these as examples for why video games are evil, etc. I still think they were well thought out ads.

  5. My college roommate and I always wanted to do our own Dreamcast commercials under the guise of "What's it Thinking?" or "OMG, It's Thinking!" The idea would be you'd see the Dreamcast sneaking down a dark hallway….then you'd see somebody sleeping in bed….then a raised Dreamcast controller with a Kitchen Knife in it……"It's Thinking (AHHHHH!!!!)"

Don't think it would have sold any systems, but it would have made a great SNL "commercial" or whatever.

  6. I have never played WoW but I love Office Space so its still pretty good, but sounds like a snicker commercial too.

      1. speaking of basketball does anybody else want to join the basketball fantasy league, and @Big Blak- when do we want to do the draft?

      2. yeah I was kind of hoping for more than 4, but I wasn't sure if anyone still wanted to do it.

      3. He means this in a very heterosexual way.

        Love you Smartguy!

(I mean that in a very heterosexual way as well).

  7. DAMN, I have so many! As a student of marketing, I've actually had to sift through hundreds of commercials and, amongst them, video games were some of the more entertaining. Here are my top five favorite video game commercials:

#5: For all you lovers of Ice Hockey and Phil Hartman, this is for you. It also partly explains why people get angry when they hear the word "Activision".

#4: If there's one thing I've learned over the years is that the Japanese are light-years ahead of us in the realm of commercial advertisements. Anybody ever play "God Hand?" Here's what you missed if you lived outside of Tokyo at the time.

#3: This one is for Mr. Padilla. As a huge fan of portable gaming, I think you can relate to the mouse. In fact, I would challenge this mouse to be Rpad.tv's new mascot if he can edge out the current mascot, Mike Dudikoff, in a site-wide election.

#2: Anybody remember "Pole Position?" Anybody remember the Pole Position commercial? I didn't think so. N8, this one is for you. Your welcome:

#1: Zelda. Over they years, they've had so many crazy awesome commercials, that I couldn't decide on one. Here are my favorite ones. And yes, I saved the best for last. The first one is a guy on crack in what seems to be Arkham Asylum, the second one is how Emenem REALLY started out and the third one proves, yet again, why the Japanese are light years ahead of us in commercial production.

(and yes, Link is f'n hot!)

Honorable Mention: This commercial always made me crack up when I was a kid, plus, I had a Game Boy, so I knew how the guy felt:
