Coffee Talk #225: AT&T and Microsoft Make My Dream Come True

AT&T and Microsoft are making my console dream come true…almost. In an earlier Coffee Talk and at G4tv, I wrote about my dream of having TiVo functionality built into a console. Earlier in the year I told you about AT&T U-Verse functionality for Xbox 360 being announced at CES 2010. It looks like the team-up will kick off in November!

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, the Tampa Bay Rays being punished for being rich whiners, the Minnesota Twins inability to beat the NY Yankees, or Diggable Planets, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

The annoying part is that I really want AT&T U-Verse, but the morons that made my building only wired it for crap-ass Time Warner Cable. My friends that have U-Verse say that its DVR functionality is nearly as slick TiVo’s and some of the functions are actually more advance. That makes the whole thing all the more frustrating. Grrrrr.

The good news is that this team-up sets a precedent and console companies are totally competitive. Perhaps Sony will combine its powers with TiVo (or really, just buy the frickin’ thing) and have TiVo software on the PlayStation 4? What do you think the chances are of my dream really coming true?

  1. Wait wait wait, what? How would that even work? I want to know more, this is something I would love to tell my gf about so she can start loving the xbox more than for just having Netflix and her playing Limbo.

  2. Just checked out what U-Verse is and I don't know if that is offered in my area (most likely it is) and if it is I might not want to pay AT&T prices.

  3. @Big Blak In my neighborhood, U-Verse is a much better value than Time Warner Cable. I'm guessing it's not available in your area since so much of the Northeast is covered by Verizon. Due to crappy laws, AT&T and Verizon are not competing for television and wired Internet services.

@All I am WAY overdue for a fresh OS install. I was thinking about upgrading to Windows 7 tonight. It should be a smooth transition, but you never know. I do have some important work to do on the site tomorrow. Should I chance it?

  4. UVerse is too damn expensive. I wanted it for NFL network and Redzone but my bill would be almost $100 per month. I think it is stupid to charge a fee per month for HD access. It's a sneaky way to advertise a lower price. This is an advanced IPTV service for crying out loud. The SD feed just clutters up the pipe!!

Does ATT charge you an extra set top box fee if you use your 360?

Eventhough I'm spewing Deathstar hate, I might wind up getting it in May of next year. I'm pretty sure Charter isn't going to keep me at a low rate. I hate the pay TV model. I want a la carte. I only watch 5 channels.

See you just need to get your girlfriend to play L4D, haha. Then I'll get my fiance to play too and theres our 4 person team!

    @Topic

This actually sounds pretty cool. I don't know how AT&T is with their service, but this would definitely put them in the lead for next year when I get to choose a new ISP and cable company.

Buy my MacBook as your back up before you do that.

Also double check to see if your video card (if any) has compatible drivers for Win7. I played hell getting a friend's Asus to recognize his cards in Xfire when he went to 7.

I had absolutely no problems transitioning to Windows 7. The upgrade was smooth and all went well. Of course I also have two 500gb external hdds with copies of all my files in case it didn't go well, but they were not needed. I don't remember it taking very long to install everything either.

  8. @ray

    very excited about tomorrow

let me be the first to say congratulations on your 1 year mark dude, im glad i could be at least a small part of it

    1. @thundercracker Thanks man! You're definitely one of the reasons the site started. I'll always remember all the nice things you wrote when things went down on the other site. So thank you!

  9. @ray

i said those things because you were without doubt the most talented and engaging of any of the staff over there. I had nothing to do with the creation of this site. It has however, been a great pleasure to keep you guys company. I cant pretend like i dont have a great measure of resentment for those people, especially at the old job, who called themselves your friends. They should have been there for you when you lost your job, and after you lost Rannie. I understand you are too good a person to hold a grudge, but im not

    shack news sucks

  10. I hope there's gonna be a "(not a review) first year of RPad.tv) thread.

    @ Ray

    Congrats dude.

Happy one year anniversary of the site!! I'm glad I can be a small part of what goes on here, this really is one the best places for me to go to online and I am always here. Everyone that I have met through here have been great people that I have really enjoyed connecting with, and your daily posts and coffee talks are something I really do look forward to each and every day. I really don't know what I would do online if this site wasn't here and there weren't so many great people to talk to. All of us might physically be far away from each other, but I've made some good friends while hanging out here.

    Here's to another great year!!

  12. I third bsu's post!

Thanks for listening to n8 and creating this site.

Also, my condolences to your fiance and her loss.
