Coffee Talk #209: Do You Care About Console Warranties?

While I was in Asia, Sony announced that PlayStation Plus customers are eligible for a discount on the PlayStation Protection Plan. The deal adds a bit of value to PlayStation Plus, but I was wondering how many of you care about console warranties. Certainly console buyers — especially new ones that were burned by the Xbox 360’s red ring of death — are more cautious these days, but does that translate into plopping down cash on something like the PlayStation Protection Plan or a Best Buy warranty?

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, 6′ 9″ Aloisia allegedly getting fired from NXT because of naughty photos, Floyd Mayweather, Jr. seemingly getting a pass for being a racist prick, or your U.S. Open picks, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

I’ve had amazing luck with consoles. My Xbox 360 Elite was the first and only console to die on me. With that in mind, I’ve never bought a console warranty — never felt the need to. That said, if the PlayStation 4 cost $600 and the PlayStation Protection Plan is still around…well, I might have to pull the trigger on that one.

Now it’s your turn! Kindly take the poll and share your thoughts on console warranties.

  1. ive never had a console die on me, so not really…but i like to know that im protected against it!

  2. Im on the same page as thunder, I feel no need for it. I always wait for the 2nd or 3rd generation of products before I buy.

  3. After having 3 360s break on me I bought my first warranty for a system when I bought my PS3, unfortunately the place I bought it from closed 4 months later, so now I'm paranoid to buy an extended warranty lol

  4. I have also never had a console die on me, so I don't really feel burned and compelled to get one. I kind of wish I would have gotten one on some of my guitar hero band equipment because neither of my guitars work anymore, but that's about it. I don't ever feel like I am getting much for my money with a lot of warranties so I always pass.

    Also, I usually don't get insurance on phones either, and have only had it for the phone I am on now. Funny thing is, I treat my phone worse because I think I made myself believe that the insurance will cover anything (which it will) so it doesn't matter how I treat the phone. When I didn't have insurance I treated my phone much better because I knew I didn't have a second chance. However I will probably get insurance on whatever phone I get next because it will be brand new and will have a higher likelihood for having flaws and defects.

    ps- Plants vs Zombies is very well done on XBLA. The controls are so smooth and effortless, especially when compared to the PC version, and it is even better than the iPhone version. I'm trying to finish the adventure mode quickly so I can play survival mode and dominate the leaderboards, which I fully intend on being able to do.

  5. Chick fil a is still handing out chicken biscuits. Thats actually what I am about to do.

    I must have a warranty on anything microsoft sells me, My xbox broke 5 times and my hard drive once. On the fifth time it broke, Less than 6 months after they replaced another broken one, The disc drive went out on it and they told me too bad. It would have been $100 to fix it and that didn't include extending the warranty. So basically Xbox sent me broke shit and told me to deal with it. As you can tell me and Xbox customer service aren't friends. I won't even bring up the two times I've had problems with the Xbox live cards either.

  6. I tend to purchase my electronics with American Express. It includes a warranty. If I'm not able to do that, I don't buy a warranty. I guess I like risk.

  7. @ Jack in the box breakfast

    I like this sausage and egg croissant sandwich things personally.

    However, it's Tuesday, and kids eat for free at IHOP. So, I'll probably end up there later.

  8. I haven't had a console break down on me yet *knocks on wood* not even my 360 but maybe that's because i hardly play it.

    @Aloisia

    I think WWE made the right move but it's not because of the pics. I don't they had a place for her and just used that as an excuse to get out of her contract. i wouldn't have want to watch her in the ring or try to be sexy.

    @Mayweather

    it's funny that mainstream media is avoiding talking about his racist rant.

    @U.S. Open

    i don't follow tennis or golf or whatever sport this pertains to. i'm upset that this interrupted Mike Tyson's 30 for 30 on ESPN 2's replay of it last night which was scheduled for 10p Central Time.

  9. I think we can all agree that if you buy an Xbox you better have a warranty for it. The PS3 and the Wii are reliable enough to not need a warranty.

    @NXT

    I was impressed at the girls last night. The WWE needs more women who can actually wrestle. Most of the divas are useless. Now that they have some real women wrestlers I would fire the Bella twins, Kelly Kelly, the French bimbo, the bad singing bimbo, hell, all of them except Melina and Alicia Fox.

  10. @rrod

    I dont watch divas matches unless theyre gimmick matches.

    I dont like her mic work or character.

  11. @RROD
    MS gives a 3 year warranty, I don't see the need for an extended one. The PS3 is either one year or less. If I bought warranties I'd buy it on the PS3.

  12. @Smartguy

    That only covers the RROD. That warranty is useless against all other malfunctions.

    @Iceman

    Will do.

  13. @ RROD

    The fat PS3's are now starting to break down in massive numbers. Ask Redd75.

    The thin ones seem to be more reliable (so far). It also depends on how often you play your consoles. For example, the Wii might break down more… if people played them more. However, Nintendo is pretty much SUPER cool about that kind of stuff.

  14. @N8R

    That may be true but 4 years until a breakdown is much, much better than a few weeks or months with an Xbox. I've never heard anyone say "I'm on my 4th PS3" but I hear "I'm on my 4th Xbox" far too often. I've even read reports of Xboxes broken out of the box so how much you play a console comes into play sometimes and sometimes it doesn't.

    Sometimes a product is just crap from the start.

    In the words of Dr. Dre, "ya'll gon keep f@%$ing around wit me and turn me back to the old me".

    "Forgot about Dre"

    Chronic 2001

  15. Never, with the exception of the PS3, the warranties in stores are less than or equal to the ones manufactures offer out of the box. TVs on the other hand, I always buy the warranty for.

  16. Funny you should post this story today, Ray. I'm 'bout to head out the door and pick up a 250 gb Slim and you can be d*%$ sure I'm going to get Best Buy's 4 year warranty for it. Wish me luck…

  17. @ RROD

    Damn… I forgot about Dre. (jk)

    I hear you, and I agree. But the question wasn't "which is better" the question was "is it worth it to get an extended warranty on ANY console".

    I argue that the answer to the question is "maybe". I've come to learn that with all consumer electronics, that the first batch runs always have flaws and bugs. Some worse than others (as you noted). But the truth is, our minds don't usually make these decisions for us, our wallets do. In most cases, it seems like the warranty is unneeded until your kicking yourself in the ass later.

    Sometimes the cost of repair is equal to or less than the cost of the warranty too.

  18. @RROD

    True it only covers the most notorious issue with the hardware, speaking of the 360. That however is still a valuable 3 year warranty. The PS3 does not offer such on any of its components. I'm not debating over which machine is engineered better, but which one I'd buy a warranty on if I did so. A bad hdd, cable, etc can be replaced on either of the machines.

  19. @RRODisHere The Bellas can actually wrestle. They're just not given the opportunity to on Raw. I've heard they've had some good matches on…uh…that other show that's not Raw, Smackdown, or NXT. I think it's called Velocity.

    @All Jet lag totally defeated me today. Woke up at 6AM, wrote two stories, went to McDonald's, started writing a long story, and crashed out at 10:30AM. I woke up five hours later. That's not going to help.

  20. Update- Apparently BestBuy doesn't offer a 4 yr warranty, just a 2 yr (at least on a PS3). Thankfully I was able to pick up the only 250gb that wasn't part of a bundle that they had. Let me tell ya, I DO NOT look forward to re-downloading almost everything to this new one.
