Hulu Starting a $9.95 Premium Subscription Service in May?

Hulu has been one of the darlings of the Internet thanks to its high-quality content that’s available for free. Millions of users love streaming television shows over Hulu, but will they love it enough to pay $9.95 a month for it? According to The LA Times, the company is preparing a premium service that could launch as early as May 24:

Under the proposal, Hulu would continue to provide for free the five most recent episodes of shows like Fox’s Glee, ABC’s Lost or NBC’s Saturday Night Live. But viewers who want to see additional episodes would pay $9.95 a month to access a more comprehensive selection, called Hulu Plus, these people said.

I go through phases with my Hulu consumption. There are some weeks when I absolutely love it and can’t get enough of its streaming awesomeness. There are also months when I don’t use the service at all. I would be willing to pay $9.95 a month for Hulu…but it would have to work across multiple devices like my consoles, iPhone, etc.

How about you? Do you dig Hulu? Would you be willing to drop money on a premium Hulu subscription?

  1. Lol I just wait for reruns but my girlfriend LOVES Hulu, I think shes going to be pissed when I tell her this later.

  2. Only if I could use it on my tv with a wireless bridge. It's pretty close to a la' carte television.

This kind of coincides…I called ATT recently about getting UVerse at my home. I hardly watch television except for Lost and sports. Anyway, for $135 per month I could get up to 12mbps and U200 (cheapest package with NFLN). WTF is that? That is such a high premium for a low internet speed and a spattering of channels that I'd watch about 4 of. Of that price quoted, that includes a $10 charge per month for HD service. I was shocked at that actually. Why would ATT waste spectrum on their line for an SD feed? Simply to charge for HD?

I think I will stick with Charter. 16mbps and HD cable for $75. No NFLN, but that channel isnt worth the ATT tax.

  3. I would be interested in this if it did cross platform like you mentioned. It would suck big ones if i had to pay 9.95 for each device i'm going to use it for.

That's cheaper then what I pay Comcrap. $190-200, depending on their mood, for cable, telephone, and a >1mbps internet. Did that $135 include phone service?

  5. I read an article a while back that said the Hulu app for iPhone was done and ready to go… but Hulu was just waiting to start this premium service first.

I also think they're gonna add more content to their library like newer movies and such that you can only access with a premium account.

  6. Nope I never watch Hulu. I get tired of all of the buffering. I hate streaming content and I don't care if it what everyone is going to I'll never use it or any other service like it.

  7. @sandrock

Nope. Just tv and subpar internet. What's really messed up about that service is that they will sell you 1.5mbps and 3mbps service. Ridiculous. Copper infrastructure needs to be junked.

12mbps is slow??? I have the fastest available to me and I get 4mbps @ max. That plenty fast for everything I do. I couldn't imagine stuff faster than that. Maybe that's why my stuff spends all day buffering though and that's why I hate streaming stuff.

I think Smartguy says that because its up to 12mbps but not at that speed, like my comcast is 10mbps but with that powerboost it goes up to 25mbps on downloads. At&t loves to use that word up to that way it can say it will reach that speed but only if you lived closer to their hub and blah blah blah.

  10. I actually miss the Comcast cable speeds in San Francisco. Time Warner in Los Angeles is a frickin' joke in comparison. Sadly, my building isn't wired for U-Verse so TW is my best option.

  11. @smartguy

As long as I go even in price I'm fine. I'm just tired of Comcast saying they will fix the line in my lard because they still haven't after a full year.

I was saying it was slow for the reasons Tokz stated but mainly because ATT feels there is a premium on 12 year old DSL speeds now that it is wrapped in a UVerse shell. Kind of like how there is a premium on voice in cell service for some reason.

  13. If I am gonna pay for this service, I want it to be adfree/less ads and be able to be consumed on more devices than just my PC.

  14. @Ray

We'll see. That is a controlled test. Neat results though. If Docsis 3.0 will be symmetrical and they are working hard on that, I have doubts about old DSL.
