Coffee Talk #69: Sony’s Sex Toy of Doom and You

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Bret Favre doing “Pants on the Ground”, what late night show you’ll be hosting in five years, or the excellent Boxing After Dark (B.A.D.) show on HBO this Saturday, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Sony’s sex toy of doom (or motion controller, if you will) for PlayStation 3 has been getting a lot of press lately. Yesterday there were a strong rumor that its official name will be PlayStation Arc. Today Sony has announced that the product will be delayed until Fall 2010. I think the delay is actually a good thing — a very good thing. My sources have raved about the hardware, but few of them have told me about software that would compelling for enthusiast gamers.

A few of you have brought up games you’d like to see on the PlayStation Arc (of the Covenant?). Boom Blox was an interesting pick, but I don’t think that’s enough. Sony needs something new and original for its motion controller to succeed. Today I wanted to ask you — as an enthusiast gamer — what kind of games would make you buy one.

Sony’s motion controller is a potentially huge product that could greatly broaden the appeal of the PlayStation 3. The big conditional is that without compelling software, it could be a monumental flop. Game developers are going to determine the fate of this thing, no doubt.

What would make the best hero software for Sony’s motion controller? Do you want the standard sports package, like Wii Sports, but with more fidelity? Do you want something more hardcore, like a first-person shooter? Would a motion-controlled Resistance work for you? Maybe you want something totally fresh and original? Or will you be unimpressed no matter what Sony does with this product?

  1. I'm hoping for a far more superior technology than that of the wii. other than that I think the power of the Playstation 3 alone is enough for me to prefer the magical wand over the wii. I don't know if they have to do anything new I just want to see it done right. most wii games are garbage

  2. I think a sports title would be fine, if it came pre-packaged with the Arc. You can't make this controller and not have it come with something. Take a page out of nintendo's playbook. I think a FPS game would be great. I dont think Sony would do it with a franchise like Resistance or Killzone. It would have to be a new franchise. If that game was to be one of their core FPS franchises they could risk alienating their gamers.

  3. I won't buy this. Even if it uses some "hardcore" app. I can't play an FPS with motion controls. THe precision isn't there and as I've said before, I can't point my arms at the TV for more than ten minutes before dropping them.

    Motion controls sound like a good idea, but for me, there is nothing you could offer me with motion controls that I would say is better.

  4. Correction to my last line on comment#4. If that FPS motion control game uses one of their core FPS franchises and fails, it could alienate their gamers.

    @HBO BAD:

    I'm looking forward to some boxing now. JuanMa should win, hopefully he learned something from his last bout. The Gamboa v. Mtgawa card should be okay too. Boxing is off to a poor start in 2010, after the Mosley v. Berto cancellation and Pacquiao v. Mayweather cancellation too. Showtime should use this time to try to come back with strong cards but they are dropping the ball. I was really interested in the Super Six tourney but that is taking forever to finish.

  5. I still don't think I'd ever purchase an Arc. Even if it came with a decent beat 'em using motion for action sequences like the GoW franchise is known for it's button ones. Or even motion controlled spellcasting for rpg's or whatnot.

    It would all depend on the software for sure. Like for example, I was really looking foward last year to the Wii's release of Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles: Crystal Bearers (long ass name). But what's kept me from buying it, is the reviews for the motion controls seemed made of fail. That crap turns me off to it all.

  6. @tokz_21Mtagwa is a tough cookie. I'm interested to see how he handles Gamboa's power. If his chin could take it, I wonder if Gamboa will get frustrated.

    As for the Super Six — dude! These guys need to recover and train. This isn't the old days when boxers would take a fight every month. Organizing a tournament is a tall order and I'm grateful Showtime has pulled it off (so far).

    I'm also happy Jermain Taylor pulled out. He's been getting rocked lately and I don't want to see him get permanently injured.

  7. Rant about LOST (spoiler perhaps)

    I really can't stand Kate. Her character is so irrational and directed by stupid motivations that I damn near couldn't watch the 5th season. Why did she decide to up and run when that lawyer showed up?? She was filthy rich! She could fight it. She probably had the kid's settlement as well. She feels the need to be in love with two dudes? Ridiculous. The icing on the cake though as far as season 5 goes: her wanting to stop the explosion by getting people off the sub then flopping and helping Jack.

    I love the time travel aspect of the show (perhaps theological metaphor now with Jakob and Locke) but her character is horrible. I hope she dies.

  8. LOST

    one more thing…why did someone never just open a can and beat answers out of someone? I couldn't take all that vague crap.

  9. @Rpad

    I understand that they need time to train but there was one in Oct and Nov. Now they next stage starts in April. 6 months later than the first one in October. It's not like they don't know who they are facing, there's only 6 boxers in this. I am also glad Taylor withdrew from the tourney. I'm thinking he should keep it a permanent retirement though.

    @smartguy

    Yeah i agree with Kate. I've been streaming Lost from season 1 to season 5 (up to the 3rd episode) and she is my least favorite character. She's annoying with wanting to be with Jack and then Jack pisses her off. So she goes to Sawyer then he pisses her off. Then she's off to Jack again. it's like come on, seriously what is the point of having her on the show. It doesn't look like she contributes anything to story besides getting Aaron off the island.

  10. @tokz_21 You realize that boxers are people too and want time to enjoy the holidays with their families. :P A lot of the top fighters take three bouts a year. Some only take two. With that in mind and in the context of organizing a tournament with different fights in different locations, the timing is pretty good.

  11. @Rpad

    Yes i do realize that boxers are people too. I guess my issue is with Showtime then. Why have boxers or promotions in your stable if you're not going to show them off. There hasn't been much boxing with all these cancellations. I just miss boxing. :(

  12. @Rpad

    Yes, i saw that. This is the reason for my rant, especially against Showtime. It's a rarity when they have card going. Their boxing budget should've taken a hit for their mis-management of funds when they tried getting MMA programming. (which i think they still have) I really hope that the Fox Sports deal with Top Rank works out. I was sad when they had to stop showing their Friday night fights on Telemundo/Telefutura/TV Azteca.

  13. @Sandrock – that would be HAWT! I can only imagine how wrong that would look to someone just walking into the room as you begin the Natal "Nipple-tweaking" motion.

  14. Off topic

    Remember that deal Netflix made with WB studio to delay movie releases by 28 days. Well it's in effect already. I looked at my queue and wondered why "the invention of lying" didn't ship. It doesn't release until 2/16/10. I can wait for it but i just figured i would let you all now that this is in effect already.

  15. @larcenous & sandrock – haha, ya I think the milo girl in the red shirt needed a good tweaking

  16. Damn movie execs, I'm still not buying your stuff!!

    Do they seriously think it will create significant sales???

  17. I'm with N8R and Smartguy – this is one scenario where the Movie execs need to support DD. it's dying and instant streaming is the best way to get movies. Hopefully Netflix won't deal in DVDs soon

  18. @smartguy

    im still on the 2nd season. and i want time to just stop so that i could have a never ending lost marathon and finish every damn episode. and yes, kate is kinda annoying.

    @topic

    motion controls are good. depends on the game your playing.

  19. @ Lost

    I am a total fiend. I've watched every episode numerous times and am dying of anticipation for the final season.

    They say they're going to answer all questions… but I got a few I doubt they will get to.

  20. im with nightshade on the light sabre game

    cant really think of any practical applications for it, sony is good at what they do though, so maybe theyll surprise me

  21. @thundercracker

    More than likely they will greenlight a bunch of mini game compilations in the hopes that one of them is a hit. the market they are selling these motion family devices too aren't savvy enough to distinguish degrees of quality.
