Conan O’Brien Reviews Hitman Absolution

In case you haven’t seen it, here’s Conan O’Brien’s excellent review of Hitman Absolution. It’s another fantastic installment of the “Clueless Gamer” series…and far more entertaining than the vast majority of videogame reviews out there. Give it a watch and let me know what you think (please!). Continue reading “Conan O’Brien Reviews Hitman Absolution”

Coffee Talk #544: Best TV Show of 2012

Kicking off the “Best of 2012” Coffee Talk columns is your favorite television show of the year. It was a tough choice for me and I was very close to giving the nod to Game of Thrones Season Two, but I’m going to go with another HBO show: The Newsroom. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, vaping egg nog e-liquid, the Spike TV VGAs, or Jeremy Hoffman’s outstanding pulled pork, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Kicking off the “Best of 2012” Coffee Talk columns is your favorite television show of the year. It was a tough choice for me and I was very close to giving the nod to Game of Thrones Season Two, but I’m going to go with another HBO show: The Newsroom. A lot of people enjoyed the show for its political commentary and use of real-world events. That stuff was great, but I loved the writing and character interaction. Aaron Sorkin himself describes the show as a romantic comedy and I’m an absolute sucker for rom-coms.

The cast is absolutely loaded, with Jeff Daniels, Emily Mortimer, and Sam Waterston leading the older generation. Alison Pill, John Gallagher, and Thomas Sadoski lead the younger cast members. When the guy from Slumdog Millionaire is your seventh lead then you have a pretty stout cast. Oh yeah, Olivia Munn was there too.

The Newsroom was just a fantastic blend of great writing and strong performances infused with a unique dose of reality. I loved the debut season and can’t wait for more.

How about you? What was your favorite TV show of 2012?

Support Nightwing: The Series on Kickstarter

As many of you know, Nightwing is my favorite comic book character. With that in mind, I was thrilled when RPadholic Iceman sent me this Kickstarter link for Nightwing: The Series. Danny Shepherd and Jeremy Le are putting together a three-part mini-series on Batman’s former boy wonder and they’re looking for Kickstarter funding. The pledging prizes are pretty sweet — batarangs, a Nightwing mask, a Red Hood mask, and a full-on Nightwing costume. Check out the pitch video and the teaser trailer below. Are You Interested in Redbox Instant Video?

GigaOm scored a major scoop on the upcoming instant-video service by Redbox and Verizon. According to the site, service will start at $6 per month. More expensive options include physical rentals from Redbox kiosks. Video-on-demand for new movies will also be available for one-time charges. The service will initially be available for PCs, Android devices, iOS devices, Xbox 360, and select Samsung consumer electronics (televisions and Blu-ray players).

I know that several of you enjoy Amazon Prime and Netflix instant videos. I also know that some of you like to rent movie discs from Redbox kiosks. Would you be interested in an all-in-one solution that covers all your bases? Do you see yourself dropping Amazon Prime or Netflix in favor of the Redbox/Verizon service? Are you excited? Or are you taking the wait-and-see approach?

Rumor: Disney to Buy Hasbro

Since purchasing Lucasfilm wasn’t enough, here’s a rumor that’s both exciting and terrifying: Disney is in talks to buy Hasbro. In addition to being one of the largest toy companies in the world, Hasbro has the rights to Transformers, G.I. Joe, Dungeons and Dragons, Nerf, Magic: The Gathering, and more. Here’s the story from MTV Geek:

We have it on good authority that serious discussions are happening at the highest levels of both Disney and Hasbro to fold the largest toy and game company on the planet into the Mouse.

From what we’re told, these are still just discussions at this point, but serious enough that something could be announced at any time and create ripples throughout the entertainment industry.

While the crossover potential would be amazing, that’s perhaps too much geek power for any one company to have. Imagine a single entity controlling all the beloved characters from Disney movies, Pixar films, Star WarsTransformers (not the crap movie, but the awesome toys/cartoon), G.I. Joe, Marvel Comics, D&D, and more?!? On one hand, it would be awesome that an entertainment company with a track record of hands-off reverence would be controlling these properties. On the other hand, it’s a bit terrifying that one company would singlehandedly control almost everything most of us loved as a kid.

What do you think of the Disney-buying-Hasbro rumor?

Coffee Talk #536: Games and Pro-Wrestling on Sports Television

Yes, you’re getting two Coffee Talk columns today, which makes this…Double Bonus Monday!!!

On a recent episode of ESPN’s Around the Horn, host Tony Reali talked about how the Philadelphia Seventy-Sixers’ “Big Bella” t-shirt canon resembled the spread gun from Contra. This prompted the show’s Michael Smith to recite the famous extra-lives code from the game. It was awesome seeing videogames being treated reverently by adults on mainstream television.

During ESPN’s pre-game show for the Los Angeles Lakers vs. the Los Angeles Clippers, host Michael Wilbon was talking about the storied history of Madison Square Garden. He mentioned events like Ali vs. Frazier I and John F. Kennedy’s birthday taking place at the “world’s most famous arena.” The show’s Bill Simmons — my favorite sports columnist of all time — mentioned that Hulk Hogan vs. The Iron Sheik should be mentioned along with those events, saying that it was one of the biggest matches in pro-wrestling history. Loved it.

When I first started writing about videogames in the ’90s, they were still considered geeky and nerdy. Back then, some people viewed pro-wrestling a “hick” thing. The WWE Attitude Era and the Monday night wars with WCW helped pro-wrestling achieve mainstream status, while the Sony PlayStation made videogames cool. Of course it helps that people like Reali, Smith, and Simmons — people that grew up with videogames and pro-wrestling — now have “adult” jobs. Watching those mentions on ESPN made me appreciate how far these forms of entertainment have come.

That said, the battle isn’t over yet. While many young adults and middle-age people have grown-up jobs in the private sector, there are older people in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives that are out of touch. They still view pro-wrestling and games in a negative light. The good news is that I’m sure that won’t be the case ten years from now.

Anyway, it was nice to see the progress of two of my favorite hobbies realized on ESPN programming.

What are some instances you’ve seen of pro-wrestling and games being taken seriously by mainstream television? Kindly leave some examples in the comments section.
