Sony Details PlayStation 3 Firmware Update 3.15

PS3 Fat

Director of PlayStation Network Operation Eric Lempel has detailed the upcoming PS3 firmware update 3.15. There are two major features in this update: a transfer utility and the ability to play PSP Minis on a PS3. Here’s what Lempel had to say:

It enables existing PS3 owners who purchase a new PS3 system (perhaps as a second unit for the household) to transfer their content from their current PS3 to the new system. Content such as games, game save data, and videos downloaded from PlayStation Network can be transferred to the new PS3 system and deleted from the current PS3 system. Other content, including personal media files (photos, music, videos), can be copied onto the new PS3 and remain on the current PS3 system.

The 3.15 update also enables “minis” to be played on a PS3 system. As we’ve reported here before, “minis” launched on PlayStation Network this fall in conjunction with the launch of PSPgo. These bite-sized games offer a more casual experience and are ideal for shorter gameplay session.

I’m curious about PSP Minis. Although long RPGs are my favorite kinds of games, I can always use something that can kill five to ten minutes, whether it’s waiting for the cable guy, standing in line, etc. Do you have any thoughts on PSP Minis?

  1. That's quite disparaging news. You can transfer it and have it deleted from the other machine?

At all of you who like digital distribution: Defend that garbage.

  2. I would like to be able to play all of the PSP games that are in the Store directly on my console. Kinda like the SuperGameboy did (man I loved that thing).

  3. For the love of god.

I've missed at least 2 firmware updates since my ps3 broke. Do you think they'll do the updates for me or will I have to call and persuade them? Or haul it to a friend's house and raid their internet since ours had to be cut off for awhile.

  4. wow, you can copy game and saves but they must be deleted? I wonder how long the process takes. I mean, it takes me all of a minute to take the HDD off my 360 and move it to the other machine

  5. I hope that you dont have to delete game data saves etc from the other machine hopefully it is just an option.I have a ps3 in my bedroom but dont use it for most games since my saves are mostly on my ps3 in the living room.Would love to have my data and saves on both.My dlc is already on both.

@ R_pad Dragons age arrived today 3 days late.Recommend a class origin for first run through?

  6. @trikkey

you are gonna wanna play all 3 classes, so just pick one, you cant go wrong

i chose elf knight mohawk…no wait, elf mage

  7. @Trikkey That's a tough one. The dwarven plots have the best writing. If you're going with a rogue, I suggest city elf because of an origin-specific weapon. Surprisingly, I had the most fun playing as a mage. For the endgame, the human noble has a pretty awesome (possible) outcome.

  8. i love dragon age, but i hate it too, because im playing without a strategy guide, and i KNOW im missing a whole lot.

  9. @ thundercracker

Knight elf mohawk ha prettey good one.Dont see any of them as being easier for the first run?

  10. @Trikkey Be sure to pick city elf. I used a Dalish elf in my first play through. Little did I know it was the blandest plot of the six. Plus, using a city elf made me think of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" often. You know, "Just a city elf!"

@thundercracker I am your living strategy guide. Just ask me and I'll likely know the answer.

@Trikkey (again) If you get the DLC, play it as soon as you're able to. They offer a ton of benefits that can be used throughout the game.

  11. @Ray – The city elf was probably the shortest of the 6 origins but the story is pretty cool, I like the whole "becoming important even though you're a nobody" thing. I decided to run with that for my rogue playthrough.

I played all 6 origins just for the achievement. I thought the Dwarf Noble was an interesting story as well.

I've almost gotten all the achievements in the game, most of the ones I have left involve romance. I'm hoping to get Alstair, Leliana, and Zevran in one shot with my City Elf. we'll see how that goes.

its little stuff, like i dont even know if im a city elf or a galish elf, for one….

and in the town where the arl is sick, theres a family thats held up in a house that wont leave, so i just broke the door down and killed them…theres gotta be a more diplomatic solution

  13. @Ray – I haven't had any issues switching the HDD between Xboxes. I do it sometimes when I go to my parents for holidays and I have an extra 360 in the house I rarely use. I think as long as my Live account and everything in on the HDD it's good to go

  14. @Thunder – I kind of felt lost on the first play-through, Well, I felt lost for the first 10-15 hours or so. I feel like after that you really start to learn locations, history, characters, items, and the like. I feel that the first several hours in any new RPG is a bit of a learning curve but excellent once you figure it out

a friend of mine bought the Elite well over a year ago once his original one died on him. He stuck his HDD (20gig) on the Elite since it no longer came with the transfer kit, nor could he get MS to even sell him one, so once he put his HDD on the elite, it won't let him play his content offline. He has to be connected to Live in order to play anything arcade titles he pulled down and paid for.

  16. @smartguy ya that sounds like extenuating circumstances, definitely worth a purchase on eBay to get the cable. I just meant for swapping hdds

  17. @shockwave

goodluck finding the cable to buy. to my best knowledge, MS doesn't sell it. They gave a few away. That's it. The ones on ebay and amazon aren't what you need to do it. I think they are missing the driver disc or something.

Regardless, I still think it's crap that you have to be connected to a network to use some content that doesn't require broadband to play….I also hate how you are locked to a specific machine. DD is more harmful than good to the consumer. I honestly don't care if the little developer can make headway if I'm losing options.

  18. @Smartguy

I don't buy DLC for my 360 anymore because I bought Halo 3 maps and I have to be logged on to use them even if I just want to run around and explore them or build one. Also my friend bought a bunch of DLC for Oblivion and Fallout 3 but he can only use it if he is connected to the internet. Thats the worst because the game cannot use any of the save files that used the DLC and it will say they are corrupted or incompatible.

  19. @slicky

Yeah, I remember you saying that. I saw it first hand a few weeks ago with my buddy and his HDD. Ridiculous.

  20. It is ridiculous. There should be something on there thats says YOU MUST have internet all the time to use.

  21. @ R_pad

Went with human noble.I will do city elf next play through. When can I do the quests involving the stone prisoner?I havent got the other one yet stone prisoner is ready to go though.

Just now going into the wilds though company showed up not long after I started "ugggghhh" lol
