Oops, he did it again. Kanye West just can’t help himself. Unhappy with Beck’s Morning Phase winning “Album of the Year” at the 2015 Grammy Awards over the heavily favored Beyonce self-titled album, West stormed the stage and interrupted the proceedings. The classless move was similar to the time ‘Ye interrupted Taylor Swift winning an MTV Video Music Award over Beyonce. While it was only a brief hop on stage at the Grammys rather than the full-on interruption at the VMAs, West followed up his moronic stunt with some ignorant comments:
If the Grammys want real artists to keep coming back, they need to stop playing with us. We ain’t gonna play with them no more. ‘Flawless,’ Beyoncé video. Beck needs to respect artistry and he should have given his award to Beyoncé, and at this point, we tired of it.
That’s just pathetic. I’m a Beck fan, but not an ardent one. He has written and performed several songs that I enjoy, but he’s also written and performed more songs that I don’t care for. I’m also weirded out that he’s part of a religion that lets you level up by paying. Having said all that, Beck is an undeniably gifted and talented artist. He’s an extraordinary musician and, last time I checked, musicians are artists. For West to imply that Beck isn’t an artist and should give his award to another artist is preposterous. Beck has decades of highly respected work and was receiving accolades when West was still getting coffee for Russell Simmons.
For his part, Beck has handled the situation gracefully (though I’m convinced these situations are covered in a Scientology manual). He told People that he thought Beyonce was going to win and said the following about Kanye West:
I still love him and think he’s genius. I aspire to what he does. How many great records has he put out in the last five years, right?
Considering what a classless lout West was being, Beck’s modesty is especially impressive.
Unfortunately, a Kanye West interruption will likely occur in the future. Beyonce will be nominated for several awards in years to come and it’s not like West will stop getting invited to the shows. Oh well, they’ll just be additional opportunities for Kanye to show the world that he’s the biggest prick in music.
On a side note, Prince looked completely awesome dressed in orange (vinyl?) and rocking a cane. Prince is pretty much the only man in the world (that’s not a pimp) that can pull off that outfit.
I wonder if his assholeness is all an act to get attention. After all, a celebrity’s status seems to share a direct correlation with the amount of attention they get. I just can’t imagine someone being THIS much of a jerk in public as if he has no one around him to say: “Hey, man; maybe doing that isn’t such a good idea…”
