GI Joe: Retaliation is Ninja-tastic

The latest trailer forĀ GI Joe: Retaliation is awesome on several levels. Initially, it focuses on the conflict between Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow. Generally speaking, cool things happen when Arashikage ninja go at it. In addition to a slick showdown between these two, a thrilling chase seen is shown, with Snake Eyes and Jinx escaping from a bunch of nameless, faceless ninja clad in red (the official color of cannon fodder?). The pair hurtle down zip lines, but really, the cool thing here is Jinx. Menacing ninja are cool, but sexy female ninja are even cooler. London explodes for a few seconds. Lastly, the trailer wraps up with some action featuring Bruce Willis and current WWE Champion, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

I’m hoping that Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow get lots of time to shine. That’s probably wishful thinking with Johnson and Willis being featured so prominently. *sigh* Some of my favoriteĀ GI Joe comics were ones that focused on the Arashikage Clan. The family has a rich and colorful history that ends in tragedy. The fall of the Arashikage Clan also ties together great characters like Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow, and Zartan. That wish aside, the trailer is pretty sweet. This movie looks like big, dumb fun.

Check out the trailer when you have a chance and let me know what you think of it (please!).

      1. Sure you can. Especially if it means less Channing Tatum. I’m totally fine with that. There are so many other characters to spend time on.

  1. I saw this movie on Friday night and I have to warn everybody here: it sucks. Do not see this movie. It is a waste of money. The first one was a lot better. It was more fun. The sequel, for starters, assumes that you saw the first one, because if you didn’t you may be a bit lost. Hell, you will still be lost if you saw the first one because you’re left wondering what happened to all of the other “Joes” that were in the previous movie, but not this one? Where is “Baroness?” She was a key figure in the first movie, but is nowhere to be found in the sequel. Where is that computer nerd guy? Where is the general that put the whole team together? Where the hell is Marlon Wayne?!

I do not like how this movie took on a more serious tone. It really sucked the fun out of it. The only cool parts were the ninja scenes, and that was only half the movie… and I really hate how the ninja storyline rips off a couple of ideas from the Spider-Man 3 playbook. I don’t want to spoil anything too much, but any movie that has me comparing it to Spider-Man 3 should suck by default.

This movie was in desperate need of a comedy relief. Any live-action movie made from a crappy 80’s cartoon series should not take itself too seriously. The Bruce Willis character could have been played by anybody. He was so bland. Also his whole “twist” thing at the end of the movie falls flat and raises even more questions that lead to more plot holes…

Speaking of which; I can suspend my disbelief pretty damn far for movies like this, but there was a point during the climax where all of the world leaders were gathered that just broke the illusion. No adult (or child over the age of 10) could possibly buy what was they were trying to sell on screen. I chuckled to myself, rolled my eyes as far as they could go as I kept thinking in my head: “O.K., now THIS is just bullshit.” … and this is coming from someone who happily bought into all of the bullshit from the first G.I. Joe movie.

Also, you guys may be down on Tatum as Duke, but in the first movie, he plays the reluctant leader type. Sure, it wasn’t all that great, but they gave him a proper motivation and the guy was an honest actor. In the sequel, they try to do the same bloody thing with The Rock. Yes, he is a very charismatic person and people love seeing him on screen, but it was just a total retread and lacked originality. I actually found myself cheering for Cobra at one point because they had way more interesting people. Except for Cobra Commander. He really sucked the big one compared to his role in the first movie. In Retaliation, he is shockingly similar to the cartoon-y villain from the 80’s, just without the “Starscream” screechy voice. I think they were trying to turn him into Darth Vader-lite. Whatever, without the Baroness and Duke in the picture, Cobra Commander is reduced to a one-dimensional character.

Shit, I can go on and on about this turd of a movie…. but I think I will stop here. You can ask me specific questions about it if you want, I guess.

I really can’t get too specific without spoiling most of it, but, really; save your money and wait until it comes out on Netflix.

    1. Great rant! I enjoyed reading it. I’ll be posting my own thoughts on the movie later today, now that I’m not sick to the point of being useless. Ha!
