Green Lantern Alan Scott is Gay

The Associated Press has revealed that Green Lantern Alan Scott will be reintroduced as a gay character in next week’s issue of DC Comics’ Earth 2. Scott was the original “Golden Age” Green Lantern and a member of the Justice Society. His ring was not given to him by the Guardians of the Universe and does not have a weakness to yellow. Instead, his ring’s power is derived from the magical Starheart.

We discussed the issue on the site last week. During a Google+ chat, I believe bsukenyan mentioned Alan Scott. I, rather immaturely, found the prospect of a gay superhero with a weakness to wood rather funny. Here are some mature details from Earth 2 writer James Robinson:

He doesn’t come out. He’s gay when we see him in issue two. He’s fearless and he’s honest to the point where he realized he was gay and he said, “I’m gay.”

What do you think of the DC’s reveal? Big news? Or a stunt that will cause minor waves?

  1. This is great, because I have always wanted to know the sexual orientation of the Golden Age Green Lantern.

    Who the hell cares?

I almost don't want to talk about this, just because It indirectly dignifies DC's desperation.

    1. A half black/white gay dude or dudett who has the power to wed anyone would cause more controversy.

      1. I don't know much about Green Lantern (any of them), but I did think Alan Scott had children, so I suppose it will be interesting to see how DC handles this change in the storyline. Not enough to make me pick up any new issues just to see what happens, but I will listen to the gossip about it all.

      2. That's an interesting choice to make, which will undoubtedly alienate a few fans. Not sure what else they could have done in this instance though. Apparently gaining the media/consumer buzz about a gay character is worth the trade off of losing two other superheros in his children.

      3. Depends on if the mother's dna was needed at all to help make the two children superheros. If it was, then is it believable that the same woman as needed previously just decides to donate her eggs to the test tube? If the same mother isn't needed then…well I don't buy that scenario at all since I think both parents play vital roles on a genetic level in how children turn out.

Sure that scenario is a possibility, but I don't see it turning out any way other than one of those panels that are slightly awkward and feel out of place with the rest of the comic at that time.

  2. Hey, I specifically mentioned that The Green Lantern Ring was gay, so I'm just going to say I was right!

… and I still stand by the statement that Hawkman is gay. If he's not, then he certainly dresses like one.

  3. Bah! What a cop out. I shouldve seen this coming since they just introduced jay garrick in this series.
