Coffee Talk #433: Gaming, Tech, and Jimmy Fallon

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, if Tebowmania will die down now that the Broncos’ streak has snapped, your WWE World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan (!!!), or Rooney Mara vs. Kate Mara, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

During a multifaceted geek chat with Nerd Friend X, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon came up. As a tech enthusiast and a gamer, I feel obligated to support the show. It helps that I actually dig Fallon’s humor and my buddy Gavin works on the show. I was surprised to learn that Nerd Friend X hates the show and Fallon. It’s one thing if he doesn’t like Fallon’s humor and the show’s writing; it’s not for everyone. As a gamer and tech enthusiast, I feel that he should support it. After all, nobody else in late night features game developers and tech editors.

I love that Epic Games’ Cliff Bleszinski showed Gears of War 3 on the show. It’s awesome that Naughty Dog’s Evan Wells and Christophe Balestra dropped by to demo Uncharted 3. Microsoft got a ton of press when Microsoft’s Kudo Tsunoda showed Kinect to mainstream America on Fallon. TheVerge.com’s Joshua Topolsky (ex-Endgadget) drops by regularly to tell Jimmy and his audience about the latest and greatest in consumer electronics. Is there a late-night show that’s more nerd-friendly than Late Night with Jimmy Fallon?

Jimmy Fallon, his writers, and his producers are the future of late night…at least the future of what I want late night to be. People that grew up with games and/or obsessed with nerd toys are getting older. I love that there’s a late-night TV-show that covers my interests with respect and enthusiasm. I dream of the day Fallon gets the 11:30 slot, bringing great games and tech content to “the big show”. With your support, he’ll get there.

What do you think of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon featuring videogames and consumer electronics? If Fallon gets an 11:30 show, do you think he’ll continue bringing on game developers and tech experts as guests? Or will games and geek stuff be relegated to after midnight instead of before it?

  1. I love that Jimmy is more techy than the rest of the late night hosts. I hate that guy he always has on with the dumb sun glasses showing off Kinect crap though. I still think those red jumpsuits are the only way the Kinect might actually work in my house.
Speaking of. I am so tired of MS crap not working I sold my Kinect and 360s for $50 the other day. Just waiting on them to come get it.

  2. Also I bought 6 games yesterday at BestBuy for $120 after tax and all new (not used).

    Lost planet 2
    Driver San Francisco
    Super Street Fighter IV
    LA Noire
    MindJack
    DeBlob 2

Also snagged Skyrim for $39.99 used at a local game store. Appears to be in mint condition

  3. God damn it, that stupid ps3 3d display is now 300 bucks at best buy. Its like these people know that im broke.

    Ray, at 300?

advise our clients interested in pork bellies (3d displays) to buy at 300….Mr Valentine (Padilla) is setting the price

that was a long walk for a trading places reference…..

    1. It's just not a good TV when it comes to image quality. The picture is very mediocre for the retail price. A good sale is more justifiable, but it's still not something I'd recommend.

  4. I love that Jimmy Fallon laughs at his own jokes more than I do.

Seriously though, I think he's doing much better now in the role than when he first started. And I love that someone on a mainstream network talks about things I care about.

  5. I don't care for his humor but I flip back and forth to see when the gadget or game trailers come up.

  6. Yo… He hosted SNL on Saturday and it was probably the best one all year. The last sketch was a Tebow sketch with Jason Sudekis playing Jesus talking about "You know, you should be praying to your kicker. Hell, I even pray to that guy". The audience totally didn't get it, but I laughed my ass off the whole time.

      1. I actually thoroughly enjoyed the whole episode from front to back. It's the first time I've been able to say that about SNL in MANY years. Even Michael Buble doing Christmas songs was outstanding. The Tebow sketch totally blindsided me. Usually, the last sketch is pretty lame. In this case, the sketch was meant for football people and you could tell that alot of the jokes went right over the heads of most of the crowd. The whole thing with Fallon hosting was just awesome.

      2. I'm looking forward to seeing the whole thing on Hulu. I love the whole writing process of SNL. It's such a difficult and creative thing. The guys and gals aren't fueled by cocaine like the classic '70s and '80s crews either.

The best SNL hosts are the ones that actually spend time writing with the crew. I'm sure Fallon went old school and spent time in writer meetings. Tom Hanks and Alec Baldwin spend a ton of time with the writers when they host. It shows in their performances.

    1. I haven't watched a full episode of SNL since the Adam Sandler/Phil Hartman/Dana Carvey/Mike Myers/Chris Farley/Kevin Nealon/Dennis Miller/Victoria Jackson/David Spade days, although I did see a bunch of skits during the Will Ferrell/Jimmy Fallon/Colin Quinn/Cheri Oteri days.

In an unrelated note; I am a Mike Wallace fan tonight. I need him to get me seven points tonight and I'm in the championship game in one of my fantasy football leagues. Here's hoping they run up the score on San Francisco.

      -M

  7. I've never liked Fallon. I don't think he is funny, like Nightshade said he laughs at his jokes more than I do. It's hard to say something positive about Fallon, but I do enjoy the fact that he brings on tech news and gamers.

  8. I think he sucks. I'm not interested in watching some guy laugh at his own stuff. I also could care less about his showing off of tech. I havent relied on tv for information outside of a live sporting event since forever.

Full disclosure: ive always found the late night shows a waste of my time. I loved th Larry Sanders show

      1. The same $30/mo for unlimited data on AT&T I have had for as long as I can remember. Had AT&T since 1999 (With one 3 day stretch of Alltel).
