This Week’s Videogame Releases (Call of Duty, Skyrim!!!)

Between Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, this might be the most loaded videogame week of the year! But wait, there’s more!!! Kojima Productions fans will definitely want to pick up the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, while wizards and witches of all ages will want LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7 (spoiler: Dumbledore dies!). Fans of cinematic adventures should check out Heavy Rain: Director’s Cut…even though it’s not really a director’s cut. You can get retarded (in here!) with The Black Eyed Peas Experience. If all this videogame excitement is too much for you then you might want to chill out with Deepak Chopra’s Leela.

Any of you picking new games this week?

  1. I really think Skyrim is being overhyped. Bethesda releases the seemingly same RPG every few years. Maybe I put in too many hours of Daggerfall, Red Spire, Morrowwind, and Oblivion. I might check it out next year as a GotY edition. I know there are many instances of this (CoD, Madden) but those aren't RPGs!

I'm prob buying MW3 because of the commercial with Dwight Howard.

    1. Fallout 3 was different enough because of the setting and (more importantly) the V.A.T.S. combat system, but, yeah, I get what you're saying. If they want to go back to the "medieval times," then they need the 10th century equivalent of V.A.T.S. to hold the game together. The NPC interactions also suffer from the lowest depths of the uncanny valley. It’s just creepy sometimes.

Oh, and I would totally launch my linguistic flames your way for the MW3 comment, but I'm an achievement whore, so I've pretty much given up that right.

      1. @You and Ray

Haha. Bethesda RPGs are built like the John Gresham books. Formula fiction. They aren't bad, but you need to skip a few in the series before you are ready for more. Kind of like Robert Ludlum novels. There really is no difference besides amnesia between Jason Bourne (Bourne Identity) and Robert Havillund (The Parsifal Mosaic).

      2. Why is that? They have been in business a long time and put out the same type of RPG. Granted part of my dissatisfaction with their formula the last few times has been the lack of a story worth mentioning. That in of itself isn't too big of a concern for Bethesda since they sell their games by virtue of it being open ended.

Granted some companies keep the same formula, but they change it up enough or add something that really makes their newest title stand out. Valve for example. They make FPS. Half Life, Counter Strike, Team Fortress, Portal, and L4D are bring something of their own.

I know they work hard, and I appreciate a dev who cares about creating an experience that isn't dependent on a multiplayer community to drive continued persistence in the title, but I feel they have simply done facelifts recently and replaced Oblivion portals with Dragons this time.

Interesting topic now that you have me thinking about it. The formula that is. Coffee talk perhaps?

edit: At least I didn't compare it to James Patterson! haha. You should finish the Dark Tower before friday.

      3. I really should finish that book. It's been sitting at about page 300 for weeks now.

My issue is not that Bethesda, or any other company has a formula. If it's a proven formula that works, then that's a good thing.

By comparison, if you go from one Treyarch game with Nazi's spawning out of closets in the Reichstag until you cross a magical line that's impossible to get to, to another one with Viet-Cong spawning out of bunker holes until you cross a magical line that's impossible to get to, that's a formula that doesn't work.

    2. Well, CoD and Madden are annual. Elder Scrolls is every few years. I appreciate the series, but I'm not a huge fan of it. For Western RPGs, I prefer BioWare games, but I have lots of friends that play Elder Scrolls for hundreds of hours…and there's not another series they devote as much time to.

      1. Yeah, my wife and I each put well over 200 hours in to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. I'm really looking forward to seeing a number of the improvements this time around.

  2. Nightshade, im with you on this, in the sense that i also REALLY enjoy the elder scrolls series.

I am just a huge fan of production quality, the music, the voiceover work, the scenery, everything…just looks, unbelievable. Like you, i will be MIA from life for a good week after this game drops. This game will soon be my master.

    1. Yeah, I know how you feel. I've drawn the reviews on both The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim AND Assassin's Creed: Revelations. So I might be MIA for the rest of the month….

  3. I'll be picking my copy of MW3 up later today for about $10 (I traded in Black Ops, Reach, and GTA4). I'm not sure when I will really play it, but that's about the only new game until either Halo game comes out.

    1. I almost stopped at GameStop to check if they were having a midnight launch for Skyrim. It then occured to me what WAS launching today and decided that I'd skip that particular zoo.

  4. I officially HATE MW3. I played online and would be spawned for less than a second and die. score ended up being 5 kills 35 deaths in under 5 minutes. The maps that I did good on would drop the connection. Lost connection on first 3 games I played. The SP is pretty boring also. I quit mid-way through the first mission. Glad I only rented it.

    1. I'm sorry you feel that way. I've played the 360 version and I experienced lag only a couple of times in the 2 hours I played. I'm actually kind of liking the online TDM; I probably won't touch the campaign until Thursday or Friday morning.

      1. My connection dropped before I could run around most. The one I played through was some Radar dome and it was tiny.

      2. I think I played that one it is one of the small ones. My fav maps are resistance and underground.

      3. Okay so I played some more. It isn't bad when there aren't so many connection issues. The problem was I got thrown into matches with people that were leveled into the 50s already. I couldn't figure out how the hell they were already that high, then in 2 hours I went from level2 up to level 20 without issue.
But I will probably play it some more, but I do like the BF maps and gameplay more.

      4. Man, I want to get BF3 on PS3 mainly so I can have some kind of shooter for PS3 and I'll get to play with you, RROD, and TC. 3 of my favorite people I've never got to game with.

The problem is, I have friends on XBL who will literally track me down at my home and kick my ass if they ever found out I got it for PS3 and not 360 to play with them.

So… if you would be so kind as to threaten physical harm against me if I get it on 360, I could use the excuse of "sorry guys, but this guy in Texas is no joke".

More threats from TC and RROD would surely help as well.

      5. lol, ironically i dont own BF, so dont get that one on my account

I'm actually playing Mafia 2 right now, on your reccomendation. Actually a great game so far, im really enjoying it.

      6. BF3 is up your alley really. It will take quite a long time to unlock the kits and vehicles. I've put in about 30 hours and have only maxed my engineer kit and tanks. I have only earned 2 silver stars on a single weapon with my engineer. I still need about 100 more kills to have everything for the G36C which is my gun of choice.

If you enjoy lots of unlocks then I feel it offers more than MW in comparison.

Kinda sounds like I'm trying to sell it, but a few ppl here love large games and I feel that BF3 delivers.

      7. i'll definitely get around to buying it, i just have so many games i need to finish/start

        MW3, Uncharted3, Mafia2, Skyrim, Dark Souls, Infamous2, etc, etc

      8. HAHA. You should get it at some point. I do want to but if I must I'll drive up there. So if you see a yellow Dodge with Texas plates…..its me

  5. I have added MGS HD collection to my Christmas wish list. I am such a mark for Star Wars and Kojima games.

    1. You know… the more and more I look at that MGS HD edition… the more I want it too.

I never played through Snake Eater, and I know it's your favorite out the lot. It's probably gonna make my wish list too.
