Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, the Yankees’ fate resting in the mentally deficient brain of AJ Burnett, Hank Williams, Jr. comparing President Obama to Adolf Hitler, or the awesome nerd buzz before Apple press conference, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Today’s Coffee Talk is brought to you by RPadholic N8R. During a Google+ messenger chat he asked, “What is the most recognizable videogame sound ever?” What a fantastic question! Gameplay, graphics, music, and story are definitely a huge part of games, but its often short sound effects that stay with us forever. Decades after I first heard them, sound effects from Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda are still stuck in my head.

If I mention the sound of Mario getting a coin or getting a power-up or getting an extra life, I’m positive that the vast majority of you know what I’m talking about. The same goes for Zelda sounds. I’m certain that most of you know the sound of Link getting a new item or unlocking a secret. At Nintendo’s E3 2011 presser, the audience totally marked out when the orchestra played Zelda sounds. Hell, the liberal use of Zelda sounds is part of why Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is so charming.

So what say you? Answer N8R’s question and name the most recognizable videogame sounds ever (please)!

  1. In addition to the already mentioned Mario sounds two others came to mind:
PunchOut sounds and the sound of activating nightvision goggles in Splinter Cell.

    1. Cheating?

Bro… you got your ass beat via a comedic tongue lashing which resulted in the form of a cowardly, underhanded forfeit.

      Get over it.

P.S. If it wasn't for spell check, I don't think I'd ever spell toungue right.

  2. All jokes aside I would put "Finish Him/Her" from MK and almost any sound from Mario or Zelda on the NES in the category of instantly recognizable sounds.

  3. So Gears 3 DLC in November. That's pretty quick.

I wish DLC was treated as an expansion instead of tiny chunks like that. Granted I'm not interested in Gears dlc but it made me wish dlc was similar to a PC expansion.

  4. Does Tiger Electronic Baseball even count as a videogame? Cause I certainly played the hell out of it and would recognize the sound anywhere.

If that doesn't count, the Pac-Man death sound is pretty up there as well as Mega Man's blaster.

    Seriously though:

Does Tiger Electronic Baseball even count as a videogame? Cause I certainly played the hell out of it and would recognize the sound anywhere.

If that doesn't count, the Pac-Man death sound is pretty up there as well as Mega Man's blaster.

    But Straight up,

Do, Does Tiger Electronic Baseball even count as a videogame? Cause I certainly played the hell out of it and would recognize the sound anywhere.

If that doesn't count, the Pac-Man death sound is pretty up there as well as Mega Man's blaster.

    But Straight up,

Do, do, do do, do, DOO. Do, do, do do, do, DOO. Do, do, do do, do, DOO DOO!

  5. When I saw Link in that second video, the first thing that popped into my head was: "Hey, Listen!", "Hey, Listen!", "Hey, Listen!", "Hey, Listen!", "Hey, Listen!", Hey, Listen!", "Hey, Listen!", "Hey, Listen!", "Hey, Listen!", "Hey, Listen!", "Hey, Listen!", "Hey, Listen!", Hey, Listen!", "Hey, Listen!", "Hey, Listen!", "Hey, Listen!", "Hey, Listen!", "Hey, Listen!", "Hey, Listen!", Hey, Listen!", "Hey, Listen!", "Hey, Listen!"

  6. The FF Victory theme is stuck in my head. And if you ever heard Mario's "falling-to-death" scream from Super Mario Sunshine, you'd never forget it.

      1. Nobody knows how to spell it without looking like they are vomiting letters.

… except of course for you Asians.

      2. I always thought it was something like "higher levity" which makes absolutely no sense, but when your a kid and don't know what levity is, it makes more sense I guess.

Crazy how some of the most recognizable sounds are also some of the most incoherent.

  7. arcade games that i played in my early youth

    maybe Galaga?

but, in reality, its probably gotta be the super mario bros theme song

  8. The mario getting a coin sound bite is probably one of the most universally recognizable sounds ever. Could be pac-man's waka waka waka sound though, that's probably a pretty close one.

Galaxian and pac-man stand out in my mind the most when talking games I played on pc. The achievement unlocked sound is actually one that is extremely recognizable to me, and I'm sure if we were all being honest here it is one of the most recognizable sounds that we just don't think about until we hear it. It's so subliminal that we aren't that conscious of it, but when we hear it we all (or those of us with xbox's) know exactly what it is.

My favorite sound bite (if I had to choose one that I actually liked out of all that are extremely recognizable) is the opening battle sequence to a Pokemon battle. Some of the sound bites from those games are underrated in my opinion, especially in Pokemon Black/White. The music in that game was really on point. City theme music from Red/Blue can be nostalgic for those of us who played those games to the death (at least I think so).
