PS3 Overtakes Xbox 360 in Global Sales

Strategy Analytics claims that Sony’s PlayStation 3 has overtaken Microsoft’s Xbox 360 in terms of worldwide installed base. The company’s numbers include sales up until the end of 2010. Here are more details from Gamasutra:

According to the company’s data, the Nintendo Wii continues to enjoy the world’s largest install base with 75.5 million active units worldwide, but the active install base of PS3s reached 43.4 million at the close of 2010 versus Xbox 360’s 42.9.

There are a few things to keep in mind. In America, the Xbox 360 still has a healthy lead over PlayStation 3. Microsoft’s sales have been strong — perhaps surprisingly so — since the release of its Kinect motion controller. While this data set shows the PS3 taking the lead, the Xbox 360 arguably has more momentum.

What do you guys and dolls think of these numbers. Also, “Flame on!!!” and, “Fore!!!”

  1. I have both systems, so I have no real dog in this fight. I find I prefer to play my 360 though for whatever reasons. My PS3 is really just for "Exclusives."

I enjoy having the Kinect actually. It allows me to game with my 4 year old while keeping him active. Sure the games aren't "Hardcore," but they're fun. If you're not into gaming to have fun, you're in it for the wrong reasons.

  2. Well I guess I should go out and buy my fourth Xbox. haha. Actually I'm not surprised, it always seemed like it was just a matter of time before PS3 overtook Xbox in global sales. I don't see PS3 doing the same thing nationally in the US, but I think we all know that PS3 is more favored in some other parts of the world than Xbox is.

    1. Well I don't really see any point in that. I think we can all see that it's obvious that teh Xbox three-60 is #winning over any other system out there ever in the history of video games.

      1. At least they don't remove functionality after the fact. :)

Try as I might I just can't flame here.

      1. Reggie would decimate Major Nelson and Kevin Butler with the giant doomsday weapon he's hiding in his chin.

        … also cash.

        -M

      2. but Reggie doesn't have a twitter account, therefore he can't play this particular game of battleship. That's probably in his best interest though.

      1. I think the Sony Move would allow Justin Bieber to better simulate playing with other guys…….

now if only I can figure out whether that's really a slam against MS or Sony…?

  3. Isn't this the part when 15 different people post "FEBRUARY 22ND!!!!! KILLZONE RAWR!!!!!!!" and the rest of us just kinda go "Meh….."

  4. Just beat Dragon Age II for the 3rd time tonight. Want to play it one more time since I had 4 full playthroughs of Dragon Age: Origins to import. I did the same thing with Mass Effect, I had 6 characters there. I love seeing where the different plot lines go depending on what I did previously.I must be missing the reason why people are complaining about this game though. Why doesn't anyone write articles about how not to make a crap game like Section 8 instead of griping about the good games?

  5. That's good news. My 130+ PS3 games clearly show that my PS3 is favored over my 28 XBOX 360 games. XBOX blows. The Kinect is a piece of crap, or at least the software with it.

Also all of the Kinect Hacks out there are the most ridiculous pieces of crap I have ever seen. A guy makes software to control you tv with Kinect, but you have to move your arms around excessively.

The Tesla coil hack just raised the voltage (or whatever the term is) as the image moves up on the screen. Not a lot behind that.

Kinect does things that the PS Eye has been doing for years and the PS Eye is FAR cheaper.

KungFu Live, I haven't seen Kinect do that yet.

This post has made me want to go home and stomp my 360 into pieces (think Office Space)

    1. You have to play this song while if you are going to do that though.

Actually my fiance wants a Kinect, and all of her friends (definitely not gamers whatsoever) love Kinect…I'm doing everything I can to convince her that it's a bad idea, but she is just as stubborn as I am.

      1. I don't get rid of any of my video game stuff anymore, heck I still own HAZE.

I used to sell my consoles and stuff. Now I miss my NES and N64. Thought I still had them, but I now remember selling them and all of my Genesis games. I regret not having them now.

      2. I actually may go through some of my old games and see what kind of trade value I can get for them. There's a few new games I'd like to play but money is tight and Gamefly keeps sending me old stuff. I'm pretty sure I don't need to horde some of the older stuff I don't play anymore anyways.

@Slicky: You still own Haze? What, is it not worth trading in for the $0.50 it's probably worth?
