Coffee Talk #324: What’s the Funniest Game of All Time?

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Hulk Hogan punching out Ryan Seacrest on American Idol, Scarlett Johansson dating Sean Penn, or getting people to call Facebook “The Facebook”, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Last night a friend totally stumped me when he asked, “What do you think the funniest game ever is?” Hours later, I’m still not sure of my answer. I immediately thought of several Tim Schafer games, as well as Conker’s Bad Fur Day. Erik Wolpaw’s work on Portal was some of the funniest writing ever in a videogame. Right now I’m leaning towards Portal…but I’m still not sure.

That’s where you come in! What are some of the funniest games you’ve played?

  1. Damn this is a tough one. My thought process was near identical to Rpads, unfortunately I have yet to complete Portal (I guess you can add that to the weekend play list as well) so I am going to say I don't know.

  2. I didn't find Portal to be that funny. Amazing game, great qualities and great writing—but I never found myself laughing. A funny game to me was easy to think of, especially with the Portal connection, and that is Team Fortress 2. From the animations, to the graphics, to the style of game play that it promotes, etc. The game clearly never takes itself too seriously and just lets you have fun. That is worth laughing at plenty of times, especially when you can watch some of the videos promoting or talking about TF2. The trailers for the sniper are always funny to me.

      1. Actually I love dark satirical humor and that's the only type of humor I consistently find funny. I thought Portal had great writing in it, I just never really found myself laughing. TF2 has elements that actually make me laugh.

  3. Conker's was the first game I thought of.

The You Don't Know Jack series has some gems in it.

  4. What do you guys think the main event should be at Wrestlemania? The rumor is that the HHH vs. Taker match will be the main event but I disagree because that match was just slapped together with no feud or build up, that match is not as big as they are making it out to be plus they deliberately fail to mention the fact that Taker already beat HHH at Wrestlemania. The Michael Cole vs. Jerry Lawler match is more of a main event match than HHH vs. Taker. I think the main event should be John Cena because of the rumored face to face with The Rock after he wins. A Cena and Rock confrontation should be the last thing that we see.

    1. I'm thinking Miz and Cena will be the main. The crowd has to go home happy at WrestleMania, so a face has to win. Hunter and Taker have fans on both sides, so I don't think it works to close the show. You have Cena win and The Rock "pass the torch" — crowd goes home happy.

    1. That's actually the right move for Google. Honeycomb still needs a bit more baking. It has a lot of great features, but also some annoying quirks that need to be ironed out. The Xoom was rushed out to beat the iPad 2 to the market. Google doesn't want the first year of "real" Android tablets to be like the first year of Android phones. Remember, prior to the original Droid, Android hardware was pretty mediocre.

      1. @Ray

Yep. I think Android having tighter controls from Google is a good thing. It being open is kind of bastardized.

I really think Google should provide the tools for people to use in order to run it stock. That to me would be a huge move in the PR direction.

  5. I'm squarely in the Psychonauts camp on this one, although all the above games deserve consideration.

  6. Just used a Xoom tablet at Best Buy. I really liked using it and it felt really comfortable while U was playing around on angry birds, the app store, google books, and the internet. The setup looked nice and felt really smooth. That felt like the start of what I would be looking for in a tablet until I looked at the price tag. A little more than I expected, since I don't pay attention to tablet prices too much, but it did seem really nice.

    1. I played with one at BestBuy. I really liked everything about it. I am still waiting for the Sam's Club WiFi only one to come out at $539.

      1. Even $539 sounds a little steep for me to want to spend on a tablet. But they do seem really nice! I think if I had the money for one, they would have to have to be a little lower than netbook prices.

      2. I understand that the price is dictated by the cost of materials going into the product, manufacturing costs, competitor's pricing, etc. But as a consumer I am only willing to pay so much. There is a breaking point for each product, and for me when it comes to tablets (this would change if I just had money to blow on random stuff) that breaking point is a little less than a netbook. I come to that conclusion based on what I would be using it for. I would be using it for the simple tasks, and probably not anything too in depth. I personally do not feel that a tablet (something that I would only use as a secondary device to my laptop (someday desktop as well as laptop) for menial tasks. Based on those things the price I would be willing to spend on a device to perform secondary tasks is not as great as a device to perform primary functions. My first laptop was $500, my second $350. No way would I spend the same amount as my first laptop which lasted 4 years and did everything I needed it to on a tablet which would not get the same amount of use.

That is also a good reason why I probably won't be buying a tablet anytime soon, I have other priorities and a tablet would not be a primary device. While looking at all of the tablets that I have played around with though I have to say the Xoom tablet was by far the best.

      3. As a secondary device, especially for travel, a tablet is far better than most netbooks. The instant-on and portability features of a tablet trump the weak chips and slow performance found on most netbooks.

What impressed you about the Xoom? I like the hardware a lot. I like some of Honeycomb's features, but others are need way more polish. I don't like that there are only a handful of tablet-optimized apps for Android.

      4. The size, weight, and the feel of it. The touchscreen worked really well, better than I thought the Galaxy Pad did. The fact that it was running an OS that was meant for a tablet probably had plenty to do with it as well. It did feel like it was a quality tablet though, which is unlike every lesser known tablet I have seen or held.

I wouldn't ever get a netbook though, I was simply using that as an example for how much I would pay for a tablet. I have no problem carrying my laptop with me wherever I go though, maybe if I did more traveling that would change—but that isn't my situation so I don't need to plan for something other than my situation. I'm not a fan of netbooks anyways though because I don't feel that they are worth the price compared to the laptops I have purchased.

What price seems right for a device with lots of tech? Just curious. You could always pair a Bluetooth keyboard if you need serious typing time. I think $500-$600 is just right.

Hard for me to gauge the prices of netbooks and tablets the same way. I had an Asus EEE PC and my iPad is just plain better all things considered. Current versions I wouldn't know though.

Goodluck whichever way you go though.

  8. Believe it or not, the game that has brought the most smiles to my face is Goldeneye for the N64 by far.

It's not that the game was funny in itself, but when my buddy Alex would come over and play, we would turn the various settings of the game to some ridiculous level and go around having fun. We would go around putting 70 or so proximity mines on one AI and then blow them all up. We would turn the AI damage to 200% and give everybody "sunburns". We would also play "nut balls" and go around shooting everybody in the groin all the time while turning their health up by 200%. We were constantly shooting Natasha in the face and in her crotch with unlimited ammo. Playthroughs with unlimited rocket launcher ammo became a race to see who could blow up the most crap and make the bad guys fly the farthest.

It might sound stupid now, but when you are 15 or so and your clown of a best friend comes over, everything becomes a lot funnier.

Aside from that, Portal 2 is pretty funny. I've also laughed a lot while playing TF2 for reasons Bsukenyan mentioned. Shooting a Heavy guy in the head or stabbing him from behind while he's eating a sandwich never gets old.

  9. Mr. Padilla,

Would you be interested in going to E3 (for free) as VGVN's official correspondent? They are having a contest to decide which lucky contestant gets to go to E3 on behalf of the Video Game Voter's Network. Here is the link:
    http://videogamevoters.org/page/s/e3insider?utm_m

and, of course, here are the rules:
    http://videogamevoters.org/pages/e3insider-offici

When I read this, I thought about you and how you would be perfect for this. I'm certain that you (and with N8's video editing capabilities) will be able to win this contest with your eyes closed. And I mean that literally, since you have a tendency to wear sunglasses while you're on camera (even when inside)… but I digress.

It would really be cool if you were to win that contest, plus, it would get your name out there to the members of the VGVN. It always helps to know as many people as you can in the industry, right?

    Go for it, man!
