Rumor: PSP2 as Powerful as PS3, Q4 2011 Release

Following yesterday’s rumor that Sony will announce the PlayStation Portable 2 on January 27, MCV’s sources have told it that Sony’s next portable system will be as powerful as its current home system. The site also discussed release information. Here’s the nitty gritty:

Sony has told licensees the device ‘is as powerful as the PlayStation 3’.

The new PSP is expected to arrive within the Q4 period, perhaps as early as October, and includes a HD screen with twin-stick controls in the familiar ‘brick’ form factor.

The system’s power makes sense, though I’m sure it’s slightly exaggerated. Similar to how the PSP serves up graphics comparable to the PS2’s, I’m sure the PSP2 will serve up visuals that are comparable to what the PS3 offers. I’m also sure that the PSP2’s best graphics will be less impressive than the PS3’s best.

The Q4 2011 release date also makes sense. The holiday season is the most lucrative and Sony doesn’t want to give the Nintendo 3DS too much of a head start.

What do you think of the latest round of PSP2 rumors? Should I color you interested? If so, which of Crayola’s 133 colors should I use? Anyone else thinking something along the lines of, “Crap! Now I need money for two new portable systems this year.”?

  1. So it's big call to fame this time around is that it will have great graphics? Like last time?

Nothing against this device but w/o some sort of dual fucntionality (we'll see) such as internet consumption, 3G/4G, phone, etc it's just not for me.

    1. Sony has learned from its mistakes with the original. I'm sure it will execute better in a lot of ways, but mobile gaming has changed so much in the last year….

      1. @Ray

I'm not sure how Asian cultures will react to a new machine (fairly good I presume) but it just seems that in western culture we want consolidation in a portable device. That argument can be made anywhere honestly though.

I just feel that if this is solely a game playing machine then it will be a dud for a lot of people in Western culture.

For instance…if a new home console is released that won't stream Netflix…would you think less of it? I would even if I already had 4 netflix streamers.

  2. i'm not down with the PSP2. i really don't like any of the titles that sony puts out for the PSP.

      1. i just don't like the way the controls are set up and the library doesn't impress me. I can play most of those games on my PS3. I'd rather enjoy them on my huge 27 inch tv than on a small 6 inch one. ( i really don't know what the size of the PSP screen is just a guess).

      2. I think if you fly a lot, then handhelds have a lot more value than if you don't. When I travel, I usually drive, which means I'm otherwise occupied.

      3. Well maybe the first crime you should commit for us is obtaining a private jet; this way you can bring your tv on a plane. (j/k) the only games i’ve been tempted to play for the PSP are the MGS, Crisis Core and the God Of War ones but besides those nothing else but even those are still not enough to get me to buy a PSP.

      4. I tend to agree with the sentiment that I prefer gaming at home on my large TV to portable or handheld gaming. I've always had issues with seeing the screens on most handheld systems. But there have been some pretty good PSP games. Both God of War games were really good. Patapon is surprisingly entertaining. Etc…..

  3. I think the only question I really want answered is "Will it have a 2nd analog stick?"
