Coffee Talk #276: Your 2011 Gaming Resolutions

Earlier in the year a bunch of you made 2010 gaming resolutions. Did you follow through? How about for 2011? Will you join me in making a gaming resolution?

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, your holiday travel nightmares, why 49F feels like a sub-zero temperature in Los Angeles, or your new year’s eve party plans, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Earlier in the year a bunch of you made 2010 gaming resolutions. Did you follow through? How about for 2011? Will you join me in making a gaming resolution? I plan on giving casual games more time in 2011. It’ll be tough because I love traditional console games, but mobile and social gaming are becoming huge parts of the gaming market. It’s an important space to follow and with any luck playing more mobile/social games will help me make actually money in 2011 (a novel idea).

Heck, I’m going to get started now! I’ve just installed Lord of Ultima for Chrome OS. I’ll play some in my Chrome browser and my Google Chrome Cr-48.

How about you? Any 2011 gaming resolutions you’d like to share?

  1. I think my resolution last year was to not make any promises (which voided the resolution to begin with)

This year, my resolution will be to play more PS3 games (since I'm more than likely ordering one today using certain Amazon links).

Which reminds me, I need all of your PSN ID's.

      1. @RROD

Sixaxis is very useful when Sniping in Killzone 2. Other than that I can't think of anytime it didn't just feel gimmicky

    1. I just created my PSN ID:

      N8R_from_RPADtv

I won't be able to take requests until after the 20th though.

      1. The order has officially been placed.

Come my birthday (Jan 20) I will officially be worthy of a place on the SDF.

  2. My resolution for gaming is making my girlfriend desensitized to video game violence so we can kill shit together lol.

  3. My resolution is to lose weight via video games. Someone gave me The Biggest Loser for Kinect because they had to take their Kinect back, not because they think I'm fat. lol.

Mainly I just want to proven to my parents and none geek friends that video games aren't just about senseless violence and you can have fun and be productive at the same time. My father thinks all my games are dumb and never wants me to spend a dime on them, but he would be okay with me paying for a gym membership again that I won't use.

  4. Playing more games with my fiance is one of my goals. That will be easier once we actually get married this coming summer, but I would like to play more with her instead of just around her.

Also, to play a ton of Pokemon to get as close to finishing the pokedex in Black/White as I can while still finishing school and finding/keeping a good job. Also, getting a good battle team together and hopefully seeing some organized matches or something like that. I really regret not going to the US championships since they were in Indianapolis this year, but hopefully they will have something in Indy or Chicago in 2011.

    1. Also, I think I kept my 2010 resolution pretty well. I was able to get in a lot of playing time just like I wanted while still keeping up just fine in my classes. And I was even able to write some papers on media/video game related topics when they were possible.

  5. 2011 resolution:

I will not buy a new console if they are released next year. I'm having serious doubts about my affinity toward console games. I have less patience with them as opposed to games on my Mac or PC.

Then again I'm buying the 3DS whenever I can pay in full on Amazon and I'm a whore for buying new tech.

    This won't work will it?

  6. For N8R, or anyone else- I'm Redd75 on PSN (surprise surprise). I'll send the rest of you requests later.

My gaming resolution for '11 is just to finish some games. I'm a very 'slow' gamer. For example, just last night in RedDead I finally played the mission where you first get to Mexico. I REALLY pace myself in my games, 'cause it gives me a (false) sense of "this game's taking me longer to play, so I'm getting more for my money". Understand what I mean?

    Happy New Year, all!

  7. The wife and I have decided to get in better shape and we're going to use EA Active to do it. We're both a week in and doing really well. So in this case, the real world and gaming resolutions overlap.

  8. my psn id is redtailman anyone can add me @topic make enough money to buy all the games that come out this year

    1. Gha! Damn you people for compelling me to impulse buy!

The sad thing is that I just bought a 12-month XBL Gold card just last week since my current one expires in February. Oh well, I guess one more year couldn't hurt right? Besides, it's for a good cause.

You know… if I was a smarter guy, I'd buy like thirty of these cards and then wait a month or two (or until a really popular Xbox game comes out) and then re-sell them for $55.00 or so.

      -M

  9. I'm mad I missed the sale that Best Buy had this past week. HeartGold for $19. Since I bought mine used with my DSi the person (low-life) didn't give me the pokewalker, so I am pokewalker-less. They cost about $15 separately, so it would have been a great deal for me to buy the whole game for $19 and then sell just the game for at least $4, and anything more than that would have been profit for me. Unfortunately I completely missed hearing about it until after they were closed last night…damn.

  10. True love is rooting for your wife's team after yours gets eliminated. Go Steelers.

FYI, the fact that the NFC West could send a 7-9 team to the playoffs while two 10-6 teams (Giants & Bucs) sit out is bullshit.

      1. And to that extent, I say: "Try not to be too disappointed when they get back to Pittsburgh. There's always next year."

        -M

      2. At least the Dolphins aren't cursed with home field advantage (or disadvantage considering we're talking about the Fins)

Oh wait, you guys didn't even make the playoffs… lucky bastards.

      3. It's not like you couldn't have made it though, I mean… Seattle is in the playoffs with the same record as the Fins.

      4. Welcome to the AFC East; where if you don't win at least ten games, you won't make the playoffs.

Seriously; one year (I can't remember which season, but I think Dave Wannstedt was the coach) the 'Fins won 10 games and didn't make the playoffs. Only in the AFC East!

Add to the fact that we, at one point, had the Colts in our division. The NFL actually had to “water-down” the AFC East because we were so overpowered.

        -M

      5. No, not only in the AFC East. See apparently 10-6 isn't good enough to get you in in either the NFC South or NFC East this year, but 7-9 in the NFC West makes you champions. I really want to vomit…..

  11. Well, I'm now officially disgusted. I hope the Saints blow out the Seahawks by 70 next week.

  12. Wow. 7-9 wins a division and gets a home playoff game. Meanwhile two teams sit out and 2 teams with better records travel to 7-9 crap team.

    1. Seriously Smartguy. Beat them by 70. Make it happen. Seattle is a joke. Giants beat them by 35 in Seattle. New Orleans should steamroll them.

      1. The biggest problem I see, is that since it is so outrageous that a 7-9 team will get a shot over a 10-6 team (which there are 4 of that aren't going by the way) is that Goodell probably will do something about it and basically make the divisions pointless and send teams the way hockey sends teams.

      2. Iceman: Top 8 teams in each conference go to the playoffs. Division winners get guaranteed spots.

      3. I think the easier solution is to make a division crown guarantee a playoff spot, not a home playoff game. Some divisions are just stacked and some divisions play weaker schedules than others depending on the rotation, injuries, etc.

It sucks that 2 teams will sit out with better records…but it sucks more than an 11 win team travels to a 7-9 team. Like how Indy had to travel to SD a few years ago when SD was 8-8. Indy lost that game btw.

      4. Indy also has this horible habit of sitting all it's players towards the end of the season and then getting kicked out of the playoffs early. The one year they one the Super Bowl was the one year they had to play all the way to the end to win their division.

In fact, the whole "let's sit everyone" theory really hardly ever works. I don't know why all the coaches and football analysts seem to love it so much.

      5. I will say this: At least the Bears played all their starters yesterday. So I don't feel like the Packers winning robbed the Giants so much as I would have it they'd won by 40 against the Bears' 2nd string unit.

      6. @Nightshade

Those are the same idiots who preach trading away a high draft pick for extra picks. For some reason ppl want to bring 20 guys to camp from the draft. F trading away a high pick. Scout better in the later rounds.

Aside from Indy's strategy of sitting starters, the cross country trip from Indy to SD was there for the purpose of highlighting a long road trip to an average team. Would the Chargers have beat Indy had Indy not rested their starters? Yes because SD owns Indy no matter what. Top seed and record should determine the venue in the playoffs in my opinion.
