Coffee Talk #254: Your Black Friday Plans and Reports

Today’s Coffee Talk is a double bonus edition…which means you have to treat it like a double rainbow. I expect you to cry with glee and ask, “What does it mean?” Seriously though, today I want to hear about your Black Friday wishes.

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, SAP being fined $1.3-billion for stealing Oracle software, trying out Coava coffee, or the magic of cranberries, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Today’s Coffee Talk is a double bonus edition…which means you have to treat it like a double rainbow. I expect you to cry with glee and ask, “What does it mean?” Seriously though, today I want to hear about your Black Friday wishes. Are you looking for games, computer stuff, new televisions, an iPad, or other goodies?!? Will you brave the crazy crowds or surf the Internet for specials (like this lovely Amazon list!)?

After you’ve grabbed your Black Friday loot, kindly post your purchases here. As for me, my Black Friday plans have been killed by a lack of income. Ha! I’d love to grab an iPad when Apple slashes prices on Friday, but I’m way too poor. Instead, I’ll draw on a piece of cardboard and pretend it’s an iPad. Ha!

Now get with your Black Friday wish list (please)!

  1. Wishful thinking but I want the Nexus S for black friday.

I've been nice to myself this year, so aside from some paid time off I'm not sure what I'd like more than PTO.

  2. After working at Best Buy for a few Black Fridays I swore off shopping during that day. People (including myself) are vicious animals on Black Friday, I just laugh now. Before that I was gun-ho, at the store by 6am as soon as the doors open I would just walk in and cut the line (because lines are for suckers) and get what I needed in about 15 minutes.

So no purchases for me but I would love to read/hear/see what our lovely online community gets.

  3. Lol I do my shopping on Amazon on black friday these days. Best way to go.

I do have to get out and get the tree.

  4. The Amazon deal of 60% off on the Nintendo Wii may finally force me to break down and buy one, especially since my son is almost 4 and starting to get the hang of gaming. We were in Best Buy earlier this week and he saw the demo station featuring Epic Mickey and his eyes lit up like only a child whose been exposed to something w/ Mickey Mouse can.

  5. This will be my first time to go out on Black Friday. But I am seriously starting to debate whether or not the deals are good enough to justify the bail money I need for kicking someones but at 5am.

Seriously though, I have never been but I want to replace my 46" rear projection with a newer TV.

All the games that are on sale I generally already own.

    1. Don't do it, man. Black Friday has a way of bringing out the absolute worst that humanity has to offer. Trust me; stay home and retain your sanity and positive outlook on life.

      -M

    2. Yeah Iceman is right, it usually isn't worth it. The only decent deal I have seen is that one tv from Target, but generally the deals aren't worth all of the trouble you have to go through.

  6. Just listened to Dr. Dre's new single. It wasn't at all what I was expecting. Perhaps it will grow on me, but I'm mildly disappointed at the moment.

    1. i like some rap music, but that just sounded like horrible horrible noise…slow it down, dre

    2. Not really a rap fan, so I guess it comes as no surprise that I don't care for it either.

      1. Did you know that some people said that, how when his last album was the chronic?

Haha if you know hip hop you'll get the joke.

      1. The first rap album I ever bought was Ice Cube's masterpiece "AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted".

This album was actually Ice Cube after his split from NWA and The Bomb Squad (who did Public Enemy's beats) did the beats.

It is still up there on my top 10 hip-hop albums of all-time.

      2. I think No Vaseline was on Death Certificate, but I'm not sure. It was either that or Lethal Injection, I can't remember. Definitely not AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted.

It had the Ni**a You Love to Hate on it which made my house shake several times back in the day. It also had Tales From The Darkside (Endangered Species) and Once Upon A Time In The Projects on it.

Seriously one of the greatest hip-hop albums ever. Even by today's standards.

Very few rap albums are timeless, this is one of them. So is "Black Sunday" by Cypress Hill, Dre's "The Chronic" and "The Marshall Mathers EP" by Eminem.

I listen to PE's records nowadays… and they unfortunately sound dated.

  7. im buying NOTHING, cause i cant find any games i want on amazon

have to buy the old lady a digital camera, gonna do that on amazon as soon as i price them

    1. I'm with you bro. I just turned the corner on a cold myself.

Today is the first day in a week that I've been able to maintain without DayQuil or NyQuil (the big Q's for those of us who are familiar).

  8. So I get home with GT5 and pop it in the PS3…and what do ya know? A damn update necessary. Took 12 minutes to download 133mb (ridiculous) and a few more after that to apply the update. This is more than likely the last game I buy for PS3. This is stupid.

    1. @SG

Unless I am dead set on playing something online I have started to just skip all of the game updates. It is getting beyond ridiculous. But at least I know when I get home this eve I have another update to skip.

      1. @slicky

I don't recall it giving me the option to skip.

It does however give you the option to install or not. Since I had been delayed nearly 15 minutes I decided what the hell, go ahead and install. Yeah…it has said approx 20 mins remaining for 10 minutes. We'll see…

        never again Sony.

      2. @SG

Yeah every time it pops up to install an update but I feel like playing NOW, I just hit the "O" button to skip it and continue into the game sans update.

Oh wait. There is a PS3 SYSTEM update?!? Sorry wires crossed I was talking about game updates. I thought you meant you just got GT5 and there was already an update for it.

      3. @Slicky

No it wasn't a firmware update this time, at least I don't think so. I didn't pay attention but the update was 133mb. I didn't notice an option to exit out of it. I'll pay better attention if I happen to put a new game disc in my machine again.

      4. @SG

There isn't an option shown. You just hit "O" to skip. I just looked for it, don't know how I knew to do that though.

    2. I occasionally turn on my PS3 just to do the system updates, because my fear is otherwise when I finally find a game I want to play on my PS3 I'll have to sit there for two hours twiddling my thumbs (or more likely, playing my 360) instead.

      1. Indeed. It doesn't help though when you pop in a game on release day and there is already a 133mb update for it lol. Just seems very sloppy. Sony should really buy some bandwidth for that stuff.

      2. haha yeah it. Check this out though, 17 minutes ago I started installing GT5 and it said 20 mins remaining….it's now saying 15.

      3. Yeah, I get that a lot too. I was getting really annoyed when I was on the new 360 dashboard beta because every other day there would be another PS3 length update that appeared to change more or less nothing and I was beginning to regret signing up for the beta.

  9. Black Friday Loot:

Mario 25th Anniversary Red Wii w/ New Super Mario Bros & Wii Sports (Amazon 169.99)

    Halo: Reach (Amazon $29.99)

    Madworld (Gamefly $11.69)

    Dead Space: Extraction (Gamefly $13.49)

    Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge (XBLA $5.00)

Not a bad day. That oughta keep me busy for a while.

      1. Also, if you see $90 worth of Leap Frog stuff, That was also me. My son's birthday is right after X-mas.

      2. And FF: 4 Heroes of Light for the wife. That was only $15.99, so that was pretty sweet. I need to turn off the computer before I spend too much. lol.

      3. Far too much. lol. Luckily, we've been squirreling away for a few of months for the holidays. Upside is, we're pretty much done. Total was somewhere around $350.00, with around $300 of it coming via Amazon (through here). You can add the latest Darth Bane book to all the stuff listed above.

On top of all that, I know my Mom is sending us Kinect, plus a new bike for our son.

  10. n8r might have to rock a frank reich logo!!!!

win or lose, how bout them bills? playing hard as hell
